I can't find the tutorial for making arcade halos. I also can't figure out what they are officially called so I am having a heck of a time searching for them.
Kneivel used to have a tutorial, but I can't find it either. It's the rings around the controls as seen here:

I'm using Photoshop. I don't need hand holding, but I could use some assistance on either knowing what the name of this is so I can find a tutorial.

Leap, Pixelhugger showed this to me years ago and it is the only way I know how to do it. Open Illustrator, post a button template that is at 300 dpi.

Next step, lock the template and create a new layer over the template.

Next step select "rectangle tool".

Then draw a square around your buttons, you can always adjust it later.

While it is still selected, you can set your "stroke" color and size, which can be adjusted later too.

Next step go to "stylize" then to "round corners".

When the window pops up, change the value anywhere between 100 to 130, it may vary, but I stick to around 110 or so. And also have the "preview" selected so you can see where the corners are.

You can then either adjust the "opacity" in Illustrator or copy it, paste it in Photoshop as a pixel then adjust it however you want like the opacity. You get the idea I hope, you can always play around with it while its in Illustrator than apply the "effects" like shadow, gradient ect in Photoshop.

Here is a generic halo for you Leap, just open it up in photoshop and it will show you the layers, opacity, gradient, shadows etc. Use it as a guide to get the results you want.

Thanks opt, I think I was away from the forums too long. I'm glad to be back.

You can also use the rounded rectangle tool to make a vector shape within Photoshop, that way you can make changes to the shape layer directly in Photoshop without having to bounce back and forth with Illustrator.

Thanks, Bamboo. Always looking for more tips!

THat was added in version 6 -- if still using an older version (like CS3 which Bamboo is using ! ) can do similar using the rectangular tool and then smoothing the selection
Select the rectangle marquee tool.
Draw a rectangle.
From the main menu, select Select->Modify->Smooth. Enter the desired corner radius.
Fill the selection with whatever color you want.
