Title: Must speakers be shielded?

Must speakers be shielded if they're mounted up by the marquee?

Isn't that far away enough from the monitor?

If not, can you buy shielding material?

The answer imo is "maybe".  You will get yes and no answers to this and has been discussed quite a bit.  It will depend on the size of speaker/field strength and the proximity to the monitor.

I am using "non-shielded car speakers", two 8" subs below the monitor and two 4" speakers above.  I am having no troubles or see any effect from the magnets.  With that said, I did order cancellation magnets to be on the safe side.

You can shield speakers 3 ways (maybe more).  One, buy already shieded speakers.  Two, buy cancellation magnets (parts express and other sources, fairly cheap), and three, buy a material to shield speakers (mu-metal, expensive).

They are just plain donut magnets.  You order them according to the size of the magnets on the speakers you are going to use.  You would then have to attach them (epoxy or other means) to the speaker magnets (where they push against each other, i think).

note: I have read on the boards that using this method can affect sound quality.  If I remember correctly it seems like in most cases it was not enough to make a difference or be a problem for sound in an arcade cabinet.

cancellation magnets could cause problems on higher end systems or to audiophiles, but you should be fine in your application.

I have 2 auto speakers above my monitor and have no problems, but I think its due to my angle (ie the monitor is pointed up) so it doesn't affect the guns.  

You'll just have to play around.

I use standard stereo amplified PC speakers  in two machines behind the marquee and they are pleanty far from the monitor and present no problem. When you think about it, it is even farther than they are when you set them on the desk next to the monitor. On another machine I use the amplifier board to drive the stock 6x9 in the cab.

My speakers are 100W unshielded car speakers in the panel below the marquee, and the monitor is an open-frame W-G D9100.  I've had no problems.
