My Alienware m14x is telling me the battery has issues and needs replaced.
It still lasts an hour or more and I can turn the warning off, but I'm a little nervous that something other than normal wear is going on if I'm getting warnings.
Anyone have recommended vendor for a replacement battery?
(Dell no longer stocks it)
I've gotten some lousy knock off phone batteries from China, so I'm a bit hesitant to pick a vendor at random.
I'd rather just pay for a battery and be done with it, but if there is a source for the original Samsung SDI cells I could go that route.
At least that way I'd be assured of the performance of the original.

I usually go ebay for my batteries, but stay a little more critical about who I buy from. I turned this up on search. I don't know what the original battery looks like, but this looks to be OEM, and manufactured in 2014. Seems like the seller exclusively resells dell batteries. Feels legit, but of course with eBay you can't really know anything for sure.

I've had to do this a few times and for me it always starts with me thinking I can just replace the cells in the old battery. But after pricing it out I usually buy one from Amazon. Not knocking Ebay, I have bought several batteries there but I just feel the return will be easier with Amazon if I get the wrong thing.

Well, I didn't want to go the ebay route, but given the seller's rep, location(near dell), and insistence that they aren't knock-offs.....done deal.

The replacement on Amazon shipped from China is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. The reviews aren't exactly glowing.
I can always open a dispute via paypal for the ebay purchase if it's not as advertised.
I'll probably tear apart the old battery for fun. If not to replace the bad cells, then to repurpose the good ones. :D

I've only done this a couple of times, but the amazon/ebay batteries are ok. They typically don't last as long per charge, but it's the difference between paying 20 bucks to keep using an old laptop vs 100+, at which point you've got to consider upgrading.

I had no problems with the last ebay laptop battery I got for my Compaq circa 2004. I've had 3 or 4 lousy Chinese cell phone batteries since then though.
The laptop is 4 years old, but I ordered it with a decent 2nd gen i7 processor (3.4Ghz "turbo boost") after being frustrated with a series of underpowered black Friday specials.
It's still a high end computer by my standards and worth dropping another $100 on.
I'm hoping to get another 5 years out of it as my primary computer.
I'm debating on updating to Windows 10 for the sake of the OS being supported further into the future.

Whats the OS on it now? If it's 8 or 8.1, I'd say definitely go to 10. 10 is so much better than 8. If you have Win7, it's a toss up. Support may be there still in five years for Win7.

The laptop has Win 7.
I updated my cheap underpowered atom tablet from 8 to 10, but haven't had time to mess around with it yet.

I'm still using a laptop from 2009 daily, upgraded it to 10 and while I don't hate it I regret it. I had just installed 7 fresh in May and it was running perfect. But I wanted a Windows 10 test machine.
Buy the battery and leave it 7.

Well if you upgrade to 10 you have 30 days to downgrade. It isn't like previous upgrades where you have to wipe the system. I think hardware issues would be the only thing I'd worry about. The catalyst control center no longer works for my video card in windows 10, but it was an exceedingly old video card. You just have to watch out for stuff like that, otherwise it's windows 7 with better directX support and a couple of non-essential bells and whistles.

I recently replace my battery in my i3 Toshiba. I don't remember exactly how old, but I'm guessing the original was 5 years and I was getting less than 1 hr out of it. I bought the replacement from eBay, and you have to be careful when searching. IIRC, I searched using the battery model # + the word "genuine". The first search result was THIS (http://www.ebay.com/itm/271961550485). NOT a genuine Toshiba battery, but a genuine battery, as opposed to a fake battery I suppose. Anyways, found one from what seemed like a reputable seller (LINK) (http://www.ebay.com/itm/321816409555) and while the battery life isn't anywhere near what it was when I first purchased my laptop, I can at least get 2+ hours out of it without tethering myself to an outlet.
BTW, I too made the jump to W10 a few weeks back. Had a few problems originally, mainly not having scroll on my touchpad, which would have been a deal breaker. But, Synaptics finally updated their driver and all is well. So far, I like the OS.

In terms of software I haven't had any issues for the most part BUT it appears that windows (aka forms) are controlled slightly different. I was looking into updating the lua scripts for the UCDP and now the stupid lua prompt is showing up in front of the emulator, and it never did that before. So I'll have to do some alterations when I get time.

Had to roll back, then update the video driver to fix the choppy scrolling. After doing that, it seems to work as well as before updating. Had to uninstall and reinstall some apps, but I don't have many on there, so not a big deal.
Sticking with 7 on the laptop.
