Title: Mame Barrel Build
Post by: TheStrayMongrel on September 17, 2015, 07:29:54 pm
So totally inspired by Griff's "Barrel of Kong" I thought that I'd have a crack myself... with a bit of a variation. Pretty pleased with the results.

Dont really want the fun of the build to end so looking to update the guts to something with a little more grunt than the Pi now.

Full build can be found here http://imgur.com/a/wzua5 (http://imgur.com/a/wzua5)

It's interesting for sure. Not really digging the tacked-on look of the CP, to be completely honest. Plus, ergonomically this cabinet looks pretty uncomfortable to play on side-by-side. But the one nice thing I like about this is that the monitor bezel, glass, and the barrel itself looks nice and clean.

But how about some details on how you went about this build?  Your imgur site is great and all, but there are a lot of steps missing (like how you got the CP to attach to the barrel, the wiring you've done, etc..). This forum was meant to share ideas/methods for cabinet building. Not just for showing off your project.  There's been a lot of new members who don't seem to get this.

Ah okay cool no worries, will do a write up of how I went about some of the less obvious stuff when i fine a bit more time.

Cheers

opt2not makes some good points that I agree with. Very clean work but the control panel doesn't blend with the barrel. The glass looks a bit over sized but I can understand how hard that was to even find in the first place probably.

It's also strange to see a 2 player barrel cab with P1 and P2 on the same side. Seeing DK running on a horizontal screen is a bit out of place too. I'm curious why the P1 and P2 buttons are rotated sideways?

Also this cab is begging for some kind of artwork around the bezel or on the CP. Maybe even a burned branding on the side? I just think this build is lacking some personality.

I heard you might try to run a xbox360 in this. I wouldn't. Keep with the classics on this.

Please understand I'm not trying to be critical but rather constructive. I like the barrel builds but there are a lot of "knockoffs" or "clones" out there and you can make yours stand out with some tweaks.

I was after something that could be reversed if i wanted thus the particular design. If i was to turn the barrel upside down and remove the controller I'd only have for small holes with timber grub screw type things in them remaining.

I looked around for quite a while and then got a quote on a piece of glass which was AU$180. One of the things was a really wanted to see how cheap I could keep this build and the whole thing (minus the price of the barrel) cost me AU$200 give or take. I certainly wanted it to be slightly smaller and was hoping for a tinted glass but then this one came up on a classified site for nothing so jumped at it. Can always swap it out down the track no problems at all.

Thats a limitation I've found due to the microswitches having to be positioned in a particular direction. Could probably be rectified but it doesnt bother me too much.

What i really wanted from this build was to be able to put it on the decking and have people think that its just a bar barrel type thing, but then on closer inspection you are pleasantly surprised that its that little bit more (as you can see in one of the pics). There is an element of keeping the missus happy too... happy wife, happy life.

Definitely wont remove the retro arcade function, will just add to it. Best of bother worlds hopefully.

Have had a lot of people say that looks very uncomfortable to play, its its not at all. When i designed it i put it at the perfect height for someone standing around 6 foot and i also got my bother to stand next to me so that I made sure we'd not be knocking shoulders the whole time. Very comfortable to play on. Viewing angle is another thing a lot of people have commented on also but its great and easy to see. Did consider tilting the monitor toward the players but didnt think it was worth it for the hassle.

Always keen to hear peoples feedback.  :)

Like the work you have put into the barrel, and get the intention re look when viewed from distance in your bar - looks sharp - though not a fan of the dual player CP

Was wondering how you have fastened the glass to the barrel?
- Seems to me it's just sitting there? worried that if a drink is placed on one of the edges it would tip the glass top

Yeah you're right its just sitting on top of a non-slip rubber edging. The glass weights heaps (I'd guess around 20kg) and wont budge with the rubber on there. I reckon that I could go close to putting my full 80kgs on the edge and it wouldnt tip over, so a glass or two is not going to be a problem. If there was even the remotest chance it could fall I'd fasten it on. Also the fact that i wanted to keep the barrel intact (pretty much) means that the only access to it is to lift off the glass top and lift out the monitor.

Bonus points for making your control template out of an empty carton of Boags

Just wondering... where did you get the barrel from? Was it cheap?

How did you make the CP fit against the barrel so accurately?

Also, what is that rubber strip that the glass rests on?

Probably an exaggeration but it's about 18mm think and weighs quite a bit.

By cutting a cardboard template to match the diameter then a bit of measuring and a deft touch with an angle grinder.

Just some sort of u-channel type rubber that has tiny grooves in it, they work well to stop any sideward movement.

Ha ha, yep good drop that one.

I live in a state that know for its wines so theyre pretty easy to come by with them at surplus stores and most hardware stores. I got it as a present but have seen them for about AU$150.

Thanks.  Your project came out nice - very clean build.  Making cuts in a round surface is a nightmare.
