Title: running simpsons on a two player cab
Post by: lowlytech on September 13, 2015, 03:03:29 pm
I have googled and searched the forum a bit and I can't find an answer.  I have a 2 player cab and I see roms on the web for simpsons 2 player (simpson2p), but when I try to launch this from mame64 command line I get an "unknown system".  If I load mameUI64 just for troubleshooting, the 2 player rom does show up as a clone under the simpsons, it loads and works fine.  So why can't I get this to run from the command line of mame64?

Sure you got the rom name right? I run the same, and I think it's named "simpsons2p" and not "simpson2p". If it's just a typo in the post here, I have no clue..

Sorry, both are wrong.  MAME roms all fit into the 8.3 file name space.  Try "simps2pa"

You might actually be right. I was I bit fast on the trigger here... But we all agree that the problem most likely is wrong filename/rom name. :)

My list of 2 player rom names on Mame 0.149

Also they seem to be child roms of the original 4 player Simpsons rom so you probably need it also !

I just dug around and I can't find a single MAME rom with a file name longer than 8 characters.  Not sure what JDFan's list is generated by, but those aren't file names.

THose are from MameUI64 and the Zip files in my rom folder have the same names !!  :dunno

That's just weird.  First time I've ever seen that.

And just to check I ran a dir in command prompt with same results ( NOTE Folder name show 0.139 but it is updated to 0.149 in actuality just never renamed the folder !!) -- And yes I did mispell Games originally also and never changed it either  :laugh2::

I believe you - that's just weird though.  I've gotten several different sets, and even looking at the various DL sites around the internet - I'm not seeing anything longer than 8 characters.  I'm gonna go look through my mameXML and see what it shows.

Just checked on of the rom download sites and they list it the same (siteName redacted in screen to avoid breaking forum rules !! ) :

And another the same but does also mention you need the original as suspected (which might be the OPs problem if he did not download it as well !!)

Ok then.  Ignore me - I am apparently an idiot.

I'm gonna claim the Mandela Effect on this one, I SWEAR I remember the names being 8.3 limited...  But after researching and looking at different MAME versions it seems that is not the case.  Though there are a LOT of files that have screwy abbreviations for some reason.  So sorry guys, lets pretend I didn't post.

Well I can't get simpsons2p or simps2p or any variant thereof to work.  My rom set is a complete .161 set verified with clrmamepro so I don't think I am missing any roms.  If I run the -listxml command to a file and look at it in an editor, there is no entries other than 4 player simpsons.  I don't get any errors about missing roms or anything like that, just the unknown system error.  It is if the commandline mame executable does not have a 2 player rom in its database

Been there done that many times !! -- I wasn't sure either which is why I went back and checked several times -- I mean it makes sense that they would have folowed the 8:3 naming so not sure what to think !

Try Mame64 instead of mame -- I just went to the command prompt and tried using mame64.exe and it started fine using the command below !! ( I don't have mame.exe since I'm using the 64 bit OS which is why the first error when trying mame instead of mame64)

Wow JDFan that's proof it works, however I still get an unknown system.  What in the world could be the cause?  Other than being on mame .161 everything else is the same as I am using a 64 bit version of mame.   Here is my screenshot after the attempt to run the same command line as you..

Wait - here's a question that might apply.  Which version of MAME did they absorb MESS?  Didn't that version require some command line voodoo?

.162 was the version where mess is combined.  However the build I am using is an r build right after the new HLSL changes were made.  I believe Revision 37865

Was just a thought.  The fact that your error is referencing a "system" is what triggered the idea.

Could be -- I'm using 0.149 which was before that and it works fine here (both simpsons2p and simpsons2p2) - so might very well be something they changed in a later version.

I just downloaded .161 from mamedev previous versions section (only appears as if they offer the 32 bit binaries) and simpsons2p2 will launch the game.  So something with < .161 seems to be what is throwing me.

You aren't by chance using a compiled version of mame that includes a "no clone" patch are you ??
since the 2 player versions are listed as clones that would make them not show up !

I might be, I am not sure.  I have tried to compile my own, but it never works out.  I am using a version that was precomplied off systempixel.fr which now that the site has been revamped, the download sections for builds are missing so I can't double check.  I do know it was neogeo OC, hi score, no nag, etc..

Try running mschamp instead of simpsons2p2

(It is a clone of mspacman and if it does the same would probably point to the mame compile not including any clones ! ) -- Reason I asked is searching on google showed this post on Gameex :

Yep, I get an "unknown system" when running mschamp.  Thanks for pointing out the whole no clone build possiblity, this build must have omitted them and I didn't realize it.

No problem --- Just glad I came across that thread as it probably would have taken awhile to think of it without seeing that (which is part of the reason the MAME devs don't like people distributing versions with no nag etc. already compiled - as users may not know what changes have been compiled in and then start reporting problems when things like this crop up !)

you should be able to find another compiled version that doesn't omit the clones and that should fix things.
