Title: video card upgrade advice
Post by: katuuuz on August 16, 2015, 01:46:54 pm
Hey guys picked up a dell dimension 2400 off Craigslist for my mame arcade.  Problem is the stock graphics card doesn't have enough ram or a tv out functionality to run gameex front end smoothly or hook up to my crt tv.  Now with the dell dimension 2400 I read to be careful BC it wont take PCI-express.  Will someone be so kind to check this card out and tell me if it will work?

If so, I'll have ample ram, and be able to use a dvi-I to RCA adapter to use my RCA tv as a display.

Thanks, hope it's compatible.

Nope that is a PCI-e card your computer only has PCI slots (see pic)

You need to get a PCI video card that requires less than 200W powersupply (If still using the original PowerSupply) and unfortunately they are usually fairly expensive for what you get (which is why most people no longer use systems that are limited to PCI slots.) Might want to reconsider and use that for a classic build that only plays games that the onboard chip can handle and get something else for this build ( The reason for saying this is the CPU in that thing is not very good either and throwing another $50 into a video card might get a few more games working decently but it is still going to struggle - so not really worth investing more $ into.)

Damn.  Was worried it wouldn't work out.  Thanks for your advice.

**EDIT**

I got my hands on a free gateway sx2855.

It's stock graphics card has vga and hdmi out.  Would I be able to go vga/rca?  Or would I still need an converter?  Was reading certain video cards will allow you to just go vga/rca with an adapter, no need for a converter.  Because I have hdmi interface does that mean it will work?

the Geforce 6200 comes in a PCI flavor.
TV-out & can be had on ebay for about $20 shipped.
Just make sure it really is a PCI & not PCI-E when you buy.

I'm not familiar with gamex though so I don't know if it will handle the front end.
