Title: Need some 360 repair advice
Post by: SlammedNiss on August 07, 2015, 03:40:18 pm
I acquired a 360 for free that has a 3 red ring error (bottom 2, top left) on it. I've never dealt with 360 RROD before, so curious if this thing is fixable. I've already got it completely disassembled and its manuf. date is 01/17/2008.

Any advice is appreciated.

RRoD is not a specific error - all it means is "General Hardware Fault".  There is a way to pull a code from the machine that will give you a more specific error.  Some are fixable, some are fixable if you have access to a SMD rework station, some just mean you have a fancy doorstop.

yes, i realize that. Which is why I asked. Instead of looking over and trying a million tutorials and playing the guessing game, I'm curious if there is a specific way that works more or less most of the time.

Before I disassembled it, I did try hooking it up. All it does is the splash screen, then RRODs after that. Thx for the info. Found a video online on how to find that.

I meant they are all pretty much the same. replace the thermal paste and put bigger screws in. I also drilled holes above and below the GPU and CPU for extra ventilation

I do appreciate the input. After slapping it back together as much as I needed, I found the more specific error code 0110, which is cold solder joint on the ram. So, from here, I'll do some more research and see if it's something I'd be interested in trying to fix or just parting out. The worst that could happen is it still not work, right?

Just whatever you do, don't do the towel wrap or the oven thing.  Both are ridiculous and only help by accident.

they both put a bandaid on the real issue, and make it worse in the long run.
