Ok, I am starting this thread in order to get a definitive list of the games that won't run full speed on any computers available today, no matter what Mame version you use.
I keep hearing people say things like it is 5 to 10 percent of games. I KNOW that isn't correct.
So go ahead and list titles that you can't get to run full speed (and the processor that won't run them full speed). If you CAN run something full speed (with your faster computer) that someone else listed, then please note that, so I can properly compile a list.
The list will be updated daily until I stop getting entries.
Fully working games only. It doesn't matter how slow it is if it doesn't work.
The List
Prop Cycle - Paige, Athlon 1200
Cruis'n USA - Minwah, P4 2.8ghz
Cruis'n World - Minwah, P4 2.8ghz
Carnevil - howard, ?

I built+tested my new cab PC yesterday (P4 2.8ghz 800fsb). I was pleasantly surprised to get a solid 60fps on Tekken...the sound doesn't work of course - do you class that 'fully working' or not?

If you consider it enjoyable with no sound, then yes. I personally don't run "no sound" games on my cabs, but I know other people enjoy them.

I don't use 'no sound' games either. But I've seen Tekken etc. mentioned a lot so I thought there may be some interest there...

Minwah, when you say tekken, I assume you mean tekken 3? additionally, are you running a XP or 98SE box.
Reason I ask is because I get higher frame per second in 98SE compared to XP on the same (quiet recent) hardware.

ah man, prop cycle....thats such a cool game! i always got a good workout at the arcade when i played that game. anybody ever seen that at arcade auctions? if so, how much.

No, Tekken (1). I got a good but slightly lower rate with Tekken 2. I didn't think Tekken 3 is in MAME yet??
This was running XP...I couldn't say how it would run under '98 :(

0.78 now has support for it! :happy dance:
Though my rig (3.0G 533FSB) seems to be under perform whats frame rates some others have claimed to get running....

All the namco 3d games have incomplete emulation so therefore they are deemed "unplayable" by default.
That's approx 25 games right off the bat.
Wheather a person feels that they are still ok without sound is irrelevant as technically they can't be played full fps, fully emulated. Full fps yes, but as they aren't fully emulated they are technically incomplete.
Lets keep the "opinions" to a minimum if we wish to do this right.
Another game:
Carnevil
no telling if it'll ever be playable at this rate.
Add on the 300+ games deemed by the mame devs as "unplayable" and there's your 10 percent. Since they wrote the drivers I think they'd be more than qualified to tell us which ones just won't run period.
Again, I explained this to you, you just don't listen. ;)

I am talking about one thing and one thing only here, that is hitting F11 in THE GAMES THAT WORK, and seeing 60/60 (or 57/57, etc).
I am not talking about what is inside the driver.
I am not talking about the presence or absence of sound.
I am not talking about how "complete" the emulation is.
I am talking about how fast the cars sitting in the showroom are, but you keep talking about how fast the broken cars in the junkyard would be if they ran.
You are talking about the gas mileage in cars that don't have engines.
If the game doesn't work, then it doesn't work, it doesn't matter how fast or slow it doesn't work.
When I say that "Actually, X computer will run every game in Mame except the hard drive games and another dozen exceptions", am I coming across as saying "X COMPUTER WILL MAKE THE NON-WORKING GAMES WORK!".
Now, with all that said.
Howard, we all very much appreciate your work on the project. I have personally decided to not update my own Mame installation until Namco Classics Volume I & II are correctly emulated with sound (the only current Mame "issue" that I really care about. Until that fix is made, I see no reason to update, as there hasn't been a new game that I have truly cared about in a loooooooong time, and each new release gets slower than the last. But, someday, when the Namco Classics fix does go in, and I update again (and have to buy a new computer because by then you probably will need a 3.0 GHZ computer for Mame, if it keeps getting slower at least), then I will certainly get to enjoy whatever you have added to the Mame team.

Maybe you should change your first post that says 'Fully Working Games' to 'Working Games'. Some would argue that if a game isn't fully emulated it isn't 'Fully Working', even though the game may well 'work'.
Might just make it a touch clearer :)

You started this thread as a mis-understanding of something I said in another thread which you still aren't getting. The number I get is 10% BECAUSE there are many games that aren't emulated AS WELL as an additional handful of games that aren't fully emulated and thus will never run at full speed until their drivers are fixed/cleaned up.
They are different issues, but the fact of the matter is in that other thread the guy who started it gave an example of a type a computer that could run all mame games. That will never ever ever happen, because :
a. some drivers are only technically complete and are so unoptimized that they are two slow on any system currently available
b. some drivers aren't even technically complete
I lump them together because what difference does it make as to why a game won't run if it won't run, on any system, period. That doesn't change the fact that no matter how fast a computer is there wil be about 10% of the games that won't run and thus a "type A" computer will never exist.
Now do you get it?
The reason I made this point over and over and over is because all of the "runnable" mame games will run on about a 1.2 gig pc instead of the xp 2700 that's shown on that thread... it's a major difference to someone on a budget.

WOW I'd be interested to know how you are doing that, I have a P4 2.4ghz 800fsb 1gig ram and I can only pull about 15 fps out of it... must be a setting somewhere that I am unaware of... I even overclocked my cpu to 3.0 ghz with very little noticeable gain...
-
i can run tekken w/ 2.6 ghz 800 fsb 1gb dual matched ram and 256mb graphics card at 59
cant run blitz
-
I can get Tekken to run @ ~45 FPS, but I can't get it to fit to the screen correctly. I've got an Athlon XP 2400+ with 256M RAM.
-
I think I might know what's causing all these differences in fps. Booting up a game and letting the attract mode run does NOT give an accurate fps. Going through the menus and game select screens will NOT give an accurate fps. Playing the game will.
As an example almost anyone with a half-way decent pc will get a full 60fps for tekken and crusin when in attract. Only after the game starts does it drop down to lower levels.
Just thought I would point that out.
-
You want an attract mode which will bring mame to a crawl. Super Dodge Ball in neogeo. It's playable in gameplay though.
