I finally upgraded my machine, MAME .78 looked good enough to make me drag my lazy butt out of my chair and hook the arcade machine up to the internet. Last time I upgraded was .68.
It seems I read something about CHD's changing somewhere along the line, but now I see they changed again for .78 and MAME came with CHDMan. I used the command prompt and did a
chdman -update kinst.chd kinst.chd
it gave me an error message that it could not create the chd. Anybody know if it is because my CHD's are so far out of date?

chdman -update kinst.chd kinst.chd
You need to specify a different name for the new chd.
Example: chdman -update kinst.chd newkinst.chd
After it completes, delete the old chd rename the new chd to kinst.chd. ;) ;D

also the program doesn't check to see if you have enough working space to create the file....it'll give a nasty error towards the end if you don't fix it
expect to free up enough hd space for twice the size of the original chd
