Title: Pi project, just about done, looking for a name
Post by: tony.silveira on March 27, 2015, 05:59:29 pm
hi all,

i took a small detour from my main cab and decided to tackle a Pi machine, based on the new Pi 2.  I'm just about done with it and am looking for a name for the little guy.  I was thinking JaPip, Just Another Pi Project. And now for some pics and descriptions:

First shot shows the size comparison compared to an xbox 360 controller, which is what I am using to play.  The case is a modified dual HD enclosure.  installed a lighted rocker switch for power.  along the bottom is a surface mount USB cable that I found online.  It was a hassle getting the company to ship as they only deal wholesale and I don't have a wholesale license but I have a friend that does :)

any way, cut the hole the right dimensions and these snap right into place, I am very happy with the way they look.

second pic is just more of a close up of the front

third pic is of the back.  up top, a snap in USB port, same as the front but this one has two ports.  below that, is a snap in ethernet port.  below that is a surface mount hdmi.  unfortunately they don't have a snap in hdmi so i had to Dremel out an opening and mount with screws.  below that is the power receptacle.

inside is the pi (in a case), a 1TB HD drive for segaCD, turbografxCD and PS1 images, everything else fits on the 32gb sd card.  i'm running retroarch and booting directly into emulationstation.

i am working out a few of the small kinks left... a few emu's don't exit with SELECT+START , still need to scrape images for a few, clean up rom directories, etc.  but other than that, she is fully playable.

i am having a hard time getting the CD images over to the pi.  SFTP is painfully slow.  i tried to plug directly into my main cab to copy over but it's ext4 format which windows doesn't read.  i tried the paragon ext4 driver for windows but that didn't work for me but it does on my mac.  so now, i am transferring images to my NAS and then from my NAS moving to the drive which is now plugged into my mac but the mac to NAS speeds aren't as fast as the PC to NAS speeds, about 1/4 the speed actually.  if anyone has any suggestions for that, i am all ears.

so that's her, whatcha all think?

keep in mind, they don't sell to end users, only to resellers.

Is there some kind of weird rule out there that Pi has to be a part of the name of any kind of project using one?  :dunno
