I'm new to the hobby and have just started building a MAME Cabinet and trying to determine which front ends, etc to start with. MY first basic question is about Operating System. I'm re purposing a relatively new Win 8.1 machine and was wondering if I'm just better off keeping it the way it is or just wiping and installing something like XP.
For reference, I'm leaning toward Hyperspin for my frontend.
Thanks!

Windows 8.1 was the fastest booting windows xp 7 8 I tested on my i5 imac with virtual box. XP is over a decade old and no longer officially supported. I would not recommend it.
There are a few new front ends being developed. Give them a try. Attract more, retroFE, bigBlue, html5fe, mgalaxy.
Linux is a viable option as well with some front ends being multi platform.

I have no issues running MAME on either of my Windows 8.1 machines. Using Mala as a FE.

Thank you both for the feedback.

And besides, I bet you have 64 bit Windows 8.1 on that PC. Couple that with 64 bit MAME, and you'll get the best possible MAME performance.
