Hi folks. :)
Quick question...
If a game didn't have bezel art on the real machine, is it possible to take a piece of custom bezel art, rename it to the name of the rom/game and have it work when the game is launched in MAME?
I have bezel art for Track and Field that I'd like to make work, but it doesn't show up at all. I also have a custom piece for Zaxxon which also didn't have bezel art on the original cabinet supposedly, yet with Zaxxon, I was able to make the custom bezel work and fit by modifying the layout file. As for TnF, I did all the same things, but it still doesn't show. I even checked under the video setting within MAME when the game was running.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Make sure that the artwork has the exact same name as the ROM you are using.

Yes it does.

Look into .LAY files.
I'd point you to Mr. Do's site here (http://mrdo.mameworld.info), but it is down right now. (maybe check the internet wayback machine)
There are several related threads like this one (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,133204.msg1372718.html#msg1372718).

Here are some examples that might help you.

it's for mame on OUYA for a 1080p widescreen but it might help you understand how custom bezels are made.

Draugr,
Here is the wiki for the basics of LAY files:

Also, if you are interested, there are several threads for "alternate" artwork on the MameWorld Artwork forum:

Empardopo, My Spanish is rusty at best. :) But, it looks like those guys at the arcadespain are using the default post.fx files that come with Mame. If so, they might be interested in the updates that Jezze did a while back. Besides corner rounding and some other features, the main reason to use Jezzes's shader/post.fx file is that it handles the shadow_mask_X/Y_count so you don't need to set it on a per game / per resolution basis.
The site is in German, so you may need to translate it:
