Well When I was building my pin and arcade, my little girl, who is 6 always would ask if I would build her one someday. I said yes, but I never committed to an idea.In July I told her I was going to build hers for her birthday. So I decided on a Nintendo style cabinet with a modified Donkey Kong theme, Unsure about ideas I posted a thread in the artwork forum asking for help http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,140306.msg1452962.html#msg1452962 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,140306.msg1452962.html#msg1452962). They help me come up with a theme. Especially JD Fan and Malenko. The theme is a pink and teal Donkey Kong theme. The cabinet is all white with pink controls and pink T-molding. The cabinet Nintendo cabinet that I built from plans from the internet.I started the cabinet in August but, I couldn't get it done for her birthday,I felt like a ---meecrob---.I picked up pace in the middle of October and finished the cabinet shell itself last week.

Here is the artwork that JDfan and Malenko designed

Here is the support brace I built for the base. I added casters that I had laying around.
Here it is ready for paint. Before I always used spray cans, the results were okay, but it was very pricey, because of the many cans of paint it took to do a cab. This time I used a paint gun, siphon style. and the results were terrible with the primer. I eventually messed with the gun a bit and got it to paint halfway decent.
I decided that there was no way I could use that gun so I bought a Cobalt HVLP gun from Lowes. The gun painted great, hardly any overspray. I used a quart of Rustoleum semi gloss white and thinned it with acetone. The results were night and day different.I put about six thin coats with no runs. Here are some more pics primered and after paint.

Today I filled a couple of areas scuffed the cab and I'm going to put a few more coats on tomorrow. Also I cut the bottom of the control panel to recess the mini trackball and the joystick. That's all for now,I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

here is the marquee, PM me your email address and I'll shoot you over the PSD (its 4MBs compressed, 14.4 MB uncompressed)

looks like it needs a little clean up, if you have any problems cleaning it, LMK and I'll do it for you.
I emailed the PSD as well.

I love these builds for kids! I think its awesome to build something their sized and that will get them interested in Arcade games or even tinkering/building on their own. My Brother and Sister-in-Law have a pirate theme going with my Nephew and as I get to working on my cabinet build I'm already thinking how cool it would be to build a pirate themed game for him complete with ship steering wheel. Of course it would have to be really small because he just turned 1..LOL Guess I'll have to wait on that.
I Love the DK theme with the pink and white. I can't tell, is the cab full sized or reduced?

+1
My 6 year old son is THRILLED with his Vigolix. When people come over and I tell them I built it, he always corrects me and says that he helped (I let him pop in the buttons and joystick and screw them in). He has always been interested in the classic arcade games but now he loves to build them too. (so cute!).

Yeah it's scaled about 80%, i]Ididn't want to make it too small where in a few years she wouldnt, be able to use it.Yeah Delusional I like your Vigilox,How many green invader cabinets do you have now? I'm gonna build my nephew one for Christmas with a Namco plug and play.

Update:11/11/14
Well the cab itself is basically done. I ordered the art from Brad (BTW he does excellent work, he is also a very good person to work with. He always makes sure you are satisfied). With prior cabinets I used spray cans, which has pros and cons. The pro is it's very easy and convenient. The con is it's very expensive.so I first White which was oil base which is a pain and doesn't paint well.Plus you have to thin with solvent.for the black I used acrylic latex. It drys, fast thins with water, and cleans up easily. So here are some pics of my progress.

PINK!!! I'm going to watch this one... oh the memories... ;D
-
Her arcade was my inspiration. That build was quite a few years ago
-
Hah - I know. My daughter just turned 10 a couple months ago. I can't believe it. The arcade cabinet still works though! There has been so much innovation by everyone on these forums since then I'm sure yours will turn out 10x cooler. There's nothing like a pink arcade cabinet - anyone who comes over and hasn't seen it thinks it is the coolest thing and people still love playing it after all this time!
-
Are you sure about the curve of the button layout and how close the trackball is to the back?
I understand you are working around the artwork, but the curve looks like it would be really uncomfortable and the trackball placement looks like jammed fingers are inevitable. :dunno

Yup I tweaked the original vinyl artwork. I used a PDF printout of the artwork to lay everything out
-
Super cool project !
Thank you for contacting me about a layout.
I will try to make something SUPER AWESOME for this project.
-
Thanks Mike. She is so special, She' such a good sweet thoughtful child.I hope she really enjoys it. I would have sawed my arm off to have my own arcade

I did a Vigilox with a Namco plug and play. It worked out pretty well. I would recumbent keeping you eyes out for a 3:4 lCD TV that will fit.

PS I am loving this build.

i am actually putting a computer in it.I was messing around with the plug and play.I think I am going to build a modified vigilox and put a plug and play in it for my nephew.I like your build locke141.
-
Well, when I started hooking up the computer,I noticed the CRT screen was tilted sideways, Looking at the screen it was perfectly square.I noticed that the screen was tilted out of adjustment.I loosened the head of the tube and tried to adjust it, then it needed degaused. I was over it,it looked like crap anyway. So I replaced the monitor with a vertical oriented 19" widescreen monitor.Mike Boss is working on a Mala layout for me:

Brad Bowman (Leucian045) did my vinyl. Also 2 thumbs up for Malenko and JDfan for the awesome artwork for Jacie's Arcade. Brad is the vinyl whisperer.I screwed up the marquee, it looks like crap up close. I forgot you had to use alcohol or water, and I couldn't get the bubbles out.Otherwise the vinyl went on perfectly. Brad is doing a reprint of the marquee. So here it is:

Looks good !! :applaud: -- I'm sure she'll enjoy it for many years.
-
I would have matched the side art height with the bezel so it closely mirrored an actual Nintendo, but other than that, good job!
-
Thanks Yotsuya, I went off pictures because I couldn't find exact dimensions. So it was sort of a guess. I was trying to find some consistancy with the picture to use as a marker. But now that you mention it I see it.
-
Hey yotsuya I'm gonna make you fly to KY next time I put vinyl art on. You would probably love it so much you wouldn't want to go back to AZ.
-
It looks really good, I was glad I could help. As for the side art, yeah its a little high, but I dont think it matters at all. I doubt Jacie is going to care about it one bit.
-
I hope she likes the layout.
I included both colors in a seperate layout so she can pick her favorite.
Let me know if any tweaks are needed.
-

Plus it gives her more room at the bottom to add her touches (If she is anything like my neice she'll be putting her own stickers all over the sides anyway !! )
One question for you -- What emulator are you using in it (I noticed in the screenshot earlier you had one of the Jakks plug and plays in there and was wondering if you were using it (assume that was for testing since you had the layout created for MAME) - since it would mean no Donkey Kong game in the DK cab which seems a bit odd ! ( Also do you need the Pauline version of DK (DK modified to have Jumpman captured and Pauline as the Hero ) - I have a working version of it that replaces the original DK (and then have the other DK versions set up with the files to run the original as the US2 version so both are available (I'm using 0.149 roms) If you need a copy let me know (if you are installing mame to the system)
-
Revised layout sent today.
Hope you guys like it.

I'm using mala front end with mame, Nes and super Nes. The plug any play picture I was just messing around. It will prob only have maybe 100 games that all work perfect. I'm gonna try and do blue stacks if I can get it to work in mala. The computer is a athalon x 2 2800 with 4 g ram and Radeon video card. Plenty fast enough for her
-
This turned out really well! Personally I was on the fence about a white/pink Nintnedo cab, but it looks pretty badass. Great job!
Makes me want to build a DK even more now. Haha :D
-
Yeah it turned out well, I'm satisfied. I finished it up today. I'll post some pics tomorrow. It's a piece of cake now to set up an easy cabinet after screwing with that pin cab. It's not perfect by no means, but she is very satisfied. I used an RF switch to turn off everything. Amazon sent me the wrong smart strip twice,so I went with the RF switch from the local walmart. I have to find a good place to mount the switch.I'm still gonna try to make a faux coin door, if I can make it look right.Yotsuya has one that's pretty beat up. I would use it but i'm not sure I could straighten it out.I wish I could find a repro one.
The biggest problem I have now is trying to find games she can play and not get frustrated. Most mame games are too hard for her. I'm gonna put a few games like flappy bird on there. rather simple PC games.

The buttons are set up is fine, most games I used on it only use 2 buttons. The trackball is a little stiff. It is an older one I had. Yea I mainly put it on there to use for navigation. I may have to re think it,it will do for now.
-
Hey guys, I finished up her arcade. It turned out really nice. I really tried to not spend a bunch of money, because my wife would murder me.The on off switch is a RF remote control. The bios is set for restart after power loss. I shut the computer down, turn the switch off as llong as you wait ten seconds it will start back up with the switch . The last thing I did was made a faux coin door, sort of for effect. Also it was a good place to put a few extra buttons. I really don't have a lot in it. I didn't really keep track. The art was probably the biggest expense.Anyway here are the final pics.

thanks, it turned out nice. She is very happy with it
-
Nice work :applaud:
-
Thanks it turned out nice. I was kinda hoping she would pay more attention to it. She goes through spells where she pays attention to and other times she ignores it. One of her older brothers jumped on it and started playing and she was all over him telling him to get off HER arcade, she wanted to play.
-
Wow. This looks great. I really like the white cab. Congrats on finishing it up.
-
Thanks
-
Nice one ! :applaud:
Sooo, any chance of posting it in the finished projects sticky ? Pretty please ?

yeah i will tonight
