Title: Has 5/8" plywood gone the way of the Dodo?
Post by: wp34 on October 21, 2014, 05:15:48 pm
I've recently been searching locally for 5/8" finished plywood and/or MDF.  Nobody seems to stock it even our local specialty lumber store.  They can get construction-grade only in 5/8.  I like using 5/8" when laminating.  Has anybody else run into this problem?

What do they try to sell you instead?  MDF or 1/2" ply, 3/4" ply?

Yep just 1/2" and 3/4" unless I want the construction grade.  If they had 9/16" I could make that work.

I may need to go take a look at the construction sheets just to see if they will work.  A lot of times that stuff is not very flat.  Also the ends are not even which I think would make it tough to route for T-molding.

What do you mean by finished plywood?  You mean prefinished plywood that has been sanded then varnished/lacquered/epoxied?

I mean good one side or sanded on one side.  We called it "finished" when I worked at a lumber yard in high school.  Basically something other than construction grade sheeting.

My local Home Depot has 77 sheets of 5\8x4x8 BC sanded pine plywood in stock according to their website -- http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbranded-19-32-in-or-5-8-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-BC-Sanded-Pine-Plywood-326135/100007300 (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbranded-19-32-in-or-5-8-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-BC-Sanded-Pine-Plywood-326135/100007300)

I looked at two different Home Depots in the past week and did not see this.  After looking online using your link I saw that another local HD has it in stock.  I stopped by there on my lunch to take a look and I think I can make those work.  They are a little rougher than I would like but much, much better than the construction sheeting.   Thanks JDFan!

Menards has 5/8", but it is special order, so you would have to wait a week or so.
