Title: What type of screw is this?
Post by: MamedInCanada on June 07, 2014, 07:49:58 pm
I believe this is some kinda security screw. I've seen it on control panels also, this one was from the speaker cover. About 5/8" in length if I recall. I got some 3/4" Phillips cross slots from Rona / Home Depot but just don't like the look.

What's the proper name for it?
Where do you get them from?

Torx Security Screw.    Not sure if you could get them at a big box store but I am sure you could Google it.

+1 on Torx security screw or "pin in head".

Not sure the exact size that you need, but probably something around T15 or T20.  :dunno

I got a small set of bits for these security screws from the local auto parts store.  They're used in automotive ignitions a lot these days.

Costco carries a 100+ piece set of bits that covers pretty much ANY security bit you'll encounter on these machines. $20, and it comes in a nice carrying case! It does not come with a handle, so you need to supply one.

Also goes by the name of 6-lobe. You can see if there is a Fastenal Store near you. They should have it.

If you got a harbor freight near ya, they less than $10 (before 20% off coupon as well).

Judging by your screen name there is no harbor freight near you. You could try Canadian Tire or Princess Auto if you have one in your area. I got my (cheap) set from PA.

Harbor Freight has the smaller set for $10.

I opted for the Costco set since it has more bits, and contains multiples of the standard Phillips, hex, star, etc...

My set is 208 pieces, that's why I couldn't find a pic of it!

Here it is:
