What's up guys & gals.
I've been sitting on this for a while, and it's a slow night at work so I figured I'd put together a
announcement post for my new arcade cabinet project.
Sadly it's not going to be an all custom built cab. It's gonna be mostly a pre-made kit from Recroom Masters with some modifications by me. *Queue the booing and hissing from the crowd.*
HA! None of this applies now. I'm getting an MK 1 cab to restore and possibly mame. Read on below for more info.
-
I'm starting to see more pictures of this thing out in the wild...and I've gotta say I'm really reconsidering buying this thing. For the kit to cost so much, and then still need to have a control panel made for it. I think I'd be better off trying to build my own again. But can't. :banghead:
But part of me is scared that it'll suffer the same fate as the previous attempt. That it'll get messed up somehow and then end up sitting in a corner for over a year and never be touched again.
What would you guys suggest? I'm honestly just stuck on what to do. I want to build, but I don't have the tools/space required. :dizzy:
If I were to try to build one again, it'd be either like a1pharm's build here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,129725.0/all.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,129725.0/all.html) orr like Martijn's last LCD Cab http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,112721.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,112721.0.html)
I really could use some advice.
-
Have you considered a Kraylix?
-
Yeah I thought about it. It is a really nice kit and he seems like a cool guy to deal with. I like his Mame kit. It resembles the kit I was originally thinking of getting, but a little more customizable.
Have you dealt with him at all emphatic?
-
No, I have not. They do look nice though. If I get another cab, it'll be a SEGA built candy cab.
-
If I could find a candy cab locally....I'd jump on that. But in South Carolina, arcade machines in general are hard to come by.
-
What about doing a widescreen bartop kit? It might not be ideal, but you could still configure the PC and most of the components you use could probably be transferred to the Vewlix when you have the space to build one. At least you could play the games you want to play now and it's probably a much more manageable project. Just a thought.
-
I like that your wife to be is ok with "nekkid boobies" in the living room, but draws the line at a MK cab.
To bad, I love the MK cabs. Was it one of the ones thats slightly rounded in front?
I can't recall who did it, but some one on here made a sit-down cab out of a single sheet of ply. It wasn't the 4' 8' sheets either. 2' by 4' maybe? Any way, it was well documented, others here have made there own versions, seemed relatively EZ to make, and in my opinion it looks really good. Others said it looked like a door wedge. Wll see if I can find it, if someone doesn't chime in with a link first.
Ok found it.
The vigolix by Vigo.

Slappyhooper made one a bit larger.
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,128876.40.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,128876.40.html)
I would just make one of these. It meets all your requirements, it has a small foot print, you could make all the cuts in one go, and it would be much cheeper then the kits you are looking at.
-
Search for "Urkelcade". Laugh. Then search for "Vigolix". That's the cab Locke is talking about.
-
I was up dating as yotsuya posted.
Good memory.
-
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Those 2 plywood cabs were pretty interesting. May be able to work with that.
@RetroGreg - That's true. Could always go small and just upgrade later. Another option to consider.
@Locke141 - the content on the cab isn't why she drew the line, it was the size. Those MK cabs take up a good amount of real estate, and I really only have room for a slim LCD style cab. She approved the naked boobies because she likes boobies. >:D If I go that route I'll need to draw up the plans to incorporate the tv I've already got lined up. Shouldn't be a problem though.
@yotsuya - Urkelcade was epic.
-
Well some really good news and some sh*t news.
Yesterday I was diagnosed with diabetes. That's the bad news.
Good news....I talked with my wife about the cabinet situation and she agreed with me about getting the MK cab instead of the kit. More cost effective, and an MK cab is essentially my dream arcade cab anyways...so it'd be stupid for me not to jump on this opportunity.
I'm working on making room for it now and will hopefully be picking it up next week.
So this thread can die and once I get the cab I'll probably start a restoration thread.
Thanks again to everyone for their input.
-
I want to hear more about the boobs
-
Sorry to hear about your diagnoses.
I don't want to be preachy and Lord knows you probably have people coming out of the wood work with advice, but exercise and a carefully manage diet may go a long way to helping to manage your new found condition. I'm a PE teacher and it seems every time the benefits of exercise comes up in the professional literature preventing and management of adult on set diabetes is listed.
:soapbox:
That's great news about the MK cab! I love the look of the ones with 3 sides in front under the CP. Can you post a Pic? Are you still going to use an LCD? I would go to the local good will and buy an old tube TV. Unless the MK cab has a working monitor, then I'd keep that.
-
Yeah. I had actually started exercising and eating healthier a couple weeks ago. It should have started a long time ago, but it didn't. It just solidifies what I need to do now and no slacking off. I don't know if it's type 1 or type 2 yet. I have to have the A1C & other blood tests on Monday, then they'll put me on either injection insulin or pills. I'm hoping pills, but because my blood sugar was so high when I was diagnosed (402), they may give me injection-insulin for a short period to get it under control, then switch to pills. My fiance is diabetic so I have a wealth of experience and information there to help. And it makes things easier on both of us when we buy groceries. We're not buying for 2 different diets.
As for the cab...
The guy mentioned there is no sound and the colors are off slightly on the monitor, but everything else works. Should potentially be easy fixes. The marquee needs to be replaced with the original artwork, and the control panel needs to be redone, as you can see in the photos. There may be a couple of spots that need some paint touched up on the front and possibly the back. But that's not a big ordeal. T-molding looks alright as well.
I'm not gonna touch the side art for a while. I want to enjoy it as it is before I get them reprinted.
This will be my first real-deal cab. So I'm super excited. Also really lucky that it's the cab I've wanted for a really long time.
Here comes the inevitable question. MK1 Cabs aren't as rare as others, and I want to keep the outside as authentic as possible. But I also would like to put a mame pc in it along side the original jamma hardware. Is that possible and worth doing? Is it easy to switch between the mame & original hardware? Either way I'll need to modify the control panel slightly to have 6 player buttons instead of 5, so I can at least hook up other jamma games in it. Because this will probably be my only cab for a long time. Took too much convincing to get it in the first place. So I want to try to put as much extra functionality in it as possible without touching the majority of the outside of the cab.
I'm not gonna put an LCD in the cab if the monitor is borked. I'm gonna try to find a equal replacement or see if I can find a suitable tube tv.
These are pics of the cab off of the seller's craigslist page.

I say preserve that cab. It may not be an ultra rare cab... like when that guy MAMEd a Computer Space cab :banghead:, but the MK cab is a bit more rare than the MKII, MK3. MK4, KI, KI2 cabs.
-
I wouldn't be changing anything on the outside other than adding 2 buttons to the control panel.
What I may do to keep it classic is have an oriignal panel with regular button layout, and then have a "mame" control panel that I can swap out.
Would that be a more acceptable solution? Again I do want to preserve this cab as much as possible, but I'd like to play more than 1 game on it.
On another note, a buddy of mine has 2 MK2 boards I think, so I may hit him up for one once I get the cab home and looked over. I'm really hoping the monitor & audio issues are easy fixes.
-
bring it on up to delaware, I'll give you an MK3 cab for it :)
-

Umm...no. :P lol
I'll be picking up the cab this coming Thursday. I'm ridiculously excited about it.
-
It looks great.
Don't know any thing about switching between the board and a Mame PC. You could just leave the board in side un attached. I'd post that kind of question to the mane page. Some one here will know.
Note: The monitor can kill you.
I have never owned or worked on a arcade monitor but from my Mame research I have seen projects where people have replaced all the caps on the board, used degaussing coils on the monitor, and some special equipment called a rejuvenator. People go to great lengths to save original monitors. If I was you, I'd ask for help at KLOV. You may get lucky and some one near you may be able to help.
-
How much for that marquee shipped to 77030?
-
You're not going to like the way MK looks when converted from CGA to VGA for an LCD. 9/10 times the original monitor chassis can be repaired for cheaper than it would cost you to get a converter and a new LCD. When you get a chance, post some pictures of the monitor image and chassis so we know what you are dealing with and what needs to happen. you'll be much happier preserving the original monitor.
EDIT: Also, if you want some new artwork, a while back myself and some other really great members were able to replicate all the original MK artwork. It's now all currently available from here...

Thanks for the input.
I'll take some photos once I get the cab in my apartment. The guy Im buying it from said he will have it "running" when I get there to show the condition of the monitor and all that.

$20. :lol
Decided on what I'm gonna do with the cab. And I think I can have my cake and eat it to in this case.
I didn't want to destroy the cab and change the artwork and all that, because the MK1 art is what I love about the cab in the first place. So I'm going to keep all the original hardware & art, but restore & remove the original CP & board and keep it off to the side. I'll build a separate control panel (with original style mk artwork with a 6 button layout), and use a Mame PC in it until I get to a point where I can acquire an LCD style cab to run the mame pc in. Once I do that, I'll swap the panels back and put the original MK board back in and keep it dedicated.
That way I can put the cab back to it's original form once I get a dedicated mame cab that can play old & newer stuff.
I've got most of the pc parts already, but now since I'm keeping the original monitor, and I'm building a separate control panel from scratch (since that won't take too much wood work), what all will I need to make the mame pc work with the arcade monitor? Will I need just an arcadevga card? Or will I need a J-pac & i-pac as well?
-
To make the PC run on the arcade monitor, you have two options...
1) ArcadeVGA + Breakout cable (you'll want the video amp too)
2) Soft15khz (depends on whether or not your video card supports it)

I've read in the software forum that Soft15khz is the way to go...but if I don't have a card that works with it, I may as well go with the arcadevga and the breakout cable right?
-
Yup but if you are able to use the Soft15khz, you'll still want to get the video amp. The video amp is necessary because most video cards only output 1 volt and this causes the arcade monitor to be dim and you have to max out your brightness controls. Using the video amp to up the voltage from 1 volt to 4 volts helps out a lot. Here is some more info...
http://www.ultimarc.com/vidamp.html (http://www.ultimarc.com/vidamp.html)
This is of course assuming you don't end up using the J-Pac because it has an amp built in.
-
Would it be easier to use the J-pac? That would mean though I'd be wiring up the control panel to work with Jamma & kick harness?
-
It's really up to you. The Jpac will work just fine.
-
So went and picked up the cab today. The guy selling it was a really nice guy. He said he was gonna Mame the cab but needed to get rid of it because of an upcoming move. So he would rather see it go to a good home and see it fully restored. He and I will be keeping in touch for sure.
The last few days I've been doing a ton of research on the hardware. MANY thanks to MK3FAN for his awesome and super informative Youtube channel. That really helped a lot. I also downloaded the manual and will probably try to print it out and put it in a binder sometime soon so I have reference.
Problems with the cab:
- Faded artwork on 1 side and on the sides & front of the control panel
- No sound (because the sound board wasn't connected at all)
- Color were off & lines showing up in the monitor
- Lots of extra wires left in from a street fighter conversion
- Marquee is missing
- Some water damage/warp on the control panel, and extra holes drilled in it
- Only one of the coin door lights light up
Not sure what else yet. I need to get a security bit set for my screwdriver so i can take the marquee out and take a look at the speakers and marquee light. I also need to test the coin door, but I don't know how to adjust it to take quarters instead of tokens.
Test switch works fine.
The roms all check out when the cab starts up. All the controls work great, though I'll probably replace all of the switches and clean the buttons off.
The sound board has a broken cap, a bad trace it looks like, and is missing the ribbon cable that connects it to the main board. A buddy of mine is gonna fix/replace the cap and take care of the trace issue.
I fiddled with the pot switches on the monitor adjustment board and got the colors looking better. Still looks like I'll need to manually adjust the RBG pots in the back of the monitor though, may be too much green or maybe not enough contrast. Will do that later on. The bezel looks like it's in good shape. I'm gonna clean it up with some WD-40 to bring out that old shine. And I'll need to cut some plexi to go infront of the monitor.
There is also a alot of spliced wires and extra uneccessary wires in the cab laying around that don't need to be there. So I'm probably just gonna replace all the jamma & kick harness wiring. Also looks like an extra audio cable was spliced for stereo sound. I dunno. That'll get taken care of as well.
It'll take some time for me to save up to get the artwork printed and get a few parts I'll need, but in the mean time I can cut the new panels and start tidying up the wiring. And at least the cab is playable without the sound. I also took a vacuum to the inside to get rid of the cob webs and layers of dust on everything. I've gotta get in there with a slightly damp rag and some soapy water to clean the caked on dirt on the bottom of the cab.
What would you guys suggest for cleaning off the sides and outside of the cab? I want to try to get this bad boy looking factory new.
Now onto the photos.

Artwork on the left side of the cab is pretty faded, but not really messed up at all. The right side's colors are spectacular, but there are some good size gouges in the artwork. So both sides are gonna get replaced. Which I'm gonna need to get some info on how to apply artwork from ThisOldGame.com. Will I need to lay the cab on it's side to get new art on it? Or can I do it with the cab standing up?
You can see the lines really well in this photo. The colors look better than that. The camera just kinda sucks. Not sure if that's the monitor, or something up with the main game PCB. What do you guys think?

See how it looks like it's too gray? That'd be the brightness and contrast that needs adjusting right?

Info on the back of the monitor. Not sure if it's the original factory one or not, but it's in good shape.

And finally here's the main board. I think it's a T board. Revision 4.0. I'm gonna upgrade to 5.0 later on and snag a Turbo Ninja hack to keep things interesting.
That's it for now. I'll grab the security bits tomorrow and take the marquee area apart to take a look at the light fixture and check the speaker condition.
-
turn down the gain on the monitor flyback, that should make the lines go away (there 2 knobs, the other one is focus)
As for the bulb, take the broken one to autozone and tell them you need a replacement bulb. If you need a security torx, I have a spare but its not a screw driver bit, its like an allen wrench.
-
Is that an actual screened marquee or just a piece of paper?
-
Is that an actual screened marquee or just a piece of paper?
I can pretty easily create that marquee for you in photoshop if you want to get it printed somewhere
-
Yeah, so could I, genius. If it's not vintage then I don't want it.

Ive seen your work, I doubt it ;)
-
Is that an actual screened marquee or just a piece of paper?
Sadly it's a vinyl decal put on a piece of plexi.
@ Malenko - I'll fiddle with those knobs (that's what she said) later on to see if I can get rid of those lines. The flyback is on the back of the monitor I assume?
-
look for the red wire leaving the chassis, not the end with the anode cap, but the other end. the knobs are right near where the red wire starts.
-
Congrats on the pickup! To properly adjust the monitor...
-) Turn the "brightness" pot on the remote board ALL THE WAY DOWN
-) Turn the "screen" pot on the flyback up until you JUST BARELY see the raster lines (the lines you are currently seeing)
-) Turn the "screen" pot back down until the lines JUST go away from the screen
-) Turn the "brightness" pot back up to desired brightness
-) Adjust "contrast" as desired.
Your colors look pretty good to me from the pictures but it's probably different in person. Post some pictures after you adjust the brightness. Also, you'll not only need the ribbon cable for the sound board but also the power cable. Here is a video I made discussing the ins and outs of MK pcb. Let me know if it helps you out...
http://youtu.be/sv_o8YQjHB8 (http://youtu.be/sv_o8YQjHB8)

Found the screen pot finally. It's where I thought it was, it just didn't look like it would turn.
But I did the adjustments and the monitor looks really damn good.
Lines are gone!

@ Malenko & MK3FAN - Thank you both for the info.
@ MK3FAN - Thanks for sharing the link. That was one of the first vids of yours that I watched. That and reading the manual for the cab has helped considerably.

You're welcome. Glad to be of help.

sorry I called it gain when I meant screen, glad it didnt mess you up
It's no problem man. I'm just glad I was able to find it and get it adjusted. Didn't mess me up at all because only one of the pots had a readable label and it wasn't Screen. So if it wasn't one it had to be the other. lol.
A little update today. Took the marquee off to get a look at the condition of the speakers. There is a bulb still in the marquee light, but obviously doesn't work. I'm not 100% sure but it probably turns on with the rest of the cab doesn't it? I didn't notice a switch and it looks like it's wired in properly. So I may go get a bulb today and test it out.

Also, sorry pbj, it is just a vinyl decal stuck to the plexi. So it's gonna either go in the trash when I peel it off the marquee, or I'll stick it to my gameroom bathroom mirror as a joke. ;)
(http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt94/gatsugodhand/Mortal%20Kombat%201%20Cab%20project/000_0001_zpsc1ba4659.jpg) (http://s601.photobucket.com/user/gatsugodhand/media/Mortal%20Kombat%201%20Cab%20project/000_0001_zpsc1ba4659.jpg.html)
I'll work on cleaning out the cob webs and vacuuming out the rest of the cab and give the insides a proper going over with some cleaner. There's about 22 years of dirt & dust collected at the bottom of this thing. lol.
Then I'm gonna sit down and type out a parts list and plan of attack.
Thanks again to everyone for their help. It is really appreciated.

A quick question from a Jamma youngling.
If I want to get rid of all the spliced wiring and all that in the cabinet, I know I'm gonna need to either rewire or just get a whole new Jamma & kick harness kit.
I was looking at Jammaboards.com at these two items:
http://www.jammaboards.com/store/jamma-full-cabinet-wiring-harness-loom-jamma-h1.html (http://www.jammaboards.com/store/jamma-full-cabinet-wiring-harness-loom-jamma-h1.html)

Also, will these work with MK 2 & UMK3 as well? Or will I need to order a different style kick harness for those 2 games?
Or can I just order this and have it work with all 3 MK Games?

Is there a better place to order them from? I've never dealt with this website so I don't know how reliable they are or anything.
Also, I have 4 black happ competition bat top sticks....I need red. Does anyone have the red bat tops and is willing to trade the black ones for them? I'd hate to order 4 full new comp sticks if I don't have to. Just need the red bat tops.

Mk2 and mk3 have the same kick harness. Tunit mk1s also use that kick harness

Alright. I have a T-unit MK1 so if I order the MK2/3/4 version it should work with my MK 1 board.
Thanky! That'll save a little cash.

If nobody has any to trade, Bob Roberts (http://www.therealbobroberts.net/joyparts.html) has them for $3 each.

Awesome! Thanks man.
Now onto the wall of questions.
I measured the plexi for the marquee and its 25" x 7". So is that the size I need to order when I order it from gameongrafix? Or is it actually smaller? Or does gameongrafix know the original size and I don't need to worry about it?
Later on I want to put a Mame pc in the cab with a 6-button control panel. So I know that I'll need to rig the pc with an ArcadeVGA card and the signal booster if I use an i-pac for controls.
So I have a couple questions about the ArcadeVGA & Booster. Ultimately I want to be able to easily restore the cab back to playing the MK1 jamma board and swap the control panel back for the original once in a while to make sure the Roms all work and to play the real deal instead of an emulation.
How would I need to rig the wiring for the sound and the monitor to make this somewhat easy to do without splicing and re-splicing wires every time I wanted to swap them around?
Also. I have a Smart Strip Surge Protector. One of those, you plug whatever device in outlet 1, when you turn it on it also turns on slots 3-6 or whatever. Would it be safe to plug the cabinet directly into that, so when I flip the switch to turn on the cab/monitor, it will turn the mame pc on as well?
I'm not near this point in the project, but I want to make sure all my ducks are in a row and I have the right info so I can make sure I get the right parts and all that over the next few weeks/months.

No. You have a Y-Unit based on your pictures. That LP/LK harness is a 12-pin. MK1 (T-Unit_ and MK2-4 use the 15-pin. As for the Jamma harness, stay away from the soldered ones. Buy one of these and you'll never regret it...

Yeah that's why I specified T Unit, because it looks like you have a Y unit board.

Hes saying if you want to replace the JAMMA harness, get that one. Its not the low quality cheap ones you see all over eBay. With a Y Unit MK1 you'll need an MK1 kick harness, the MKII(and up) one wont work. Basically Y Unit MKs used the street fighter harness, T Unit MK1s and MKII through MK4 used a 15 pin harness, same as Killer Instinct.

This is the LP/LK harness you need...(don't pay attention to the sticker on the connector. It's a 12-pin if you count the pins)

I ordered the Jamma & Kick harness just a few minutes ago, a long with the marquee from gameongrafix. Hopefully I ordered the correct size. I made a note in the order to print whatever the original marquee size is for that cab. So hopefully it'll be right. If not I got a cool wall decoration.
Also, turns out the marquee light bulb still works. It just wasn't sitting in the fixture properly. So huzzah!
Shipping for that Jamma harness was a little pricey I thought. $11.99 coming from florida to south carolina. Ah well. It'll be the last Jamma harness I buy for a while so hopefully it'll last.
This weekend I'm gonna strip all the current harness wiring out, replace it and rerun everything more neatly, hopefully install the new marquee and strip the control panel down to the metal plate and get it prepped for new artwork whenever I can order that.
On another note. It's really funny how my fiance has been acting about this project. Once we got the cab in the apartment, she's been offering suggestions and asking me all about it. She's almost as excited as I am about it. So that makes me happy. I was afraid she was gonna be really against it...especially considering how hard I had to push to get the cab in the first place. She never got to play the MK games growing up, or most arcade games for that matter. Her mother was ridiculously strict with that kinda thing. At least now we can both share in the nostalgia and I get to experience her enjoying these games for the first time. So that's pretty cool.

I hadn't seen that before. But I will definitely go that route. Looks really clean. Thanks for sharing Scott. I appreciate it. ;D

Some complications have arisen with the jamma harness...so it's gonna be a while before there is any progress with re-wiring the cab.
But I did take the control panel apart, remove the buttons and strip the old artwork off. I'm gonna have to scrape all the old adhesive off of the metal plate. There's also some warping around the 2nd player joystick hole. Not sure what to do about that other than maybe take a rubber mallet to it and hope for the best. There's actually a gap between the metal and the wood under the warp.
Here's the stripped control panel:

Decided to fire up photoshop and work on a MALA layout for the arcade pc today.
Got a couple of monitor questions though.
What is the resolution for an orignal MK monitor? 336 x 240? I was looking over at the arcade museum website and that's what it had listed for that machine. Assuming it's the original monitor & chasis.
Or can I do a layout thats 640x480 and have that work?
-
Little bit of an update.
The sound board may be borked. Someone ripped off one of the capacitors and half-@$$ed soldered it back. Only soldering one of the legs.
If the board is truly borked and not salvageable, is there a good place online to keep an eye out for working sound boards other than ebay? I've seen a few on there but they mostly say untested and I don't want to buy a 2nd full PCB set just to get a working sound board.
Also, I'm working on getting my mame pc setup. Decided to go with an older system to run just Mame in the cab. I'm gonna keep my higher end parts set aside for an LCD arcade cab that I'm gonna start building either later this year or next year. I've had a friend offer his garage space and power tools as long as I let him help me work on the cab and he come play on it occasionally. So that's awesome.
But in any case. The older system is a dual-core intel with about 2 gb of ram and is currently running Vista (blargh). I've just gotta get an ArcadeVGA card and signal booster and I should be good to go on that front. And of course build a mame control panel board for the cab.
So I have a monitor/frontend question.
I'm gonna use MALA as my front end because it's relatively simple to setup and I can use a custom theme. But I don't know what resolution to make my layouts because I'm not sure how the ArcadeVGA will adjust the size to fit my arcade's monitor. I read that GroovyMame is probably the best version of mame to use on the older arcade monitors. Is that the case? I do like how it already has the hiscore.dat and no nag screen in it.
After doing some reading, I think the MK monitor runs at 336 x 240. Can anyone confirm this?
If that is the case, do I need to make my layouts in Mala all that size? Or can I make them 1024x768 or 800x600 or 640x480 and Mala will auto-adjust according to what the ArcadeVGA card is set to? ???

Alright so I received my marquee from gameongrafix. And while it looks really nice....its the wrong size. It's too big so I'd have to trim it to fit, which would cut into the letters in the logo...which isn't gonna happen.
Not knocking gameongrafix. The quality is top notch and it looks great. Just wasn't printed to the correct size...so I can't use it.
Seems like anytime I order something for this cab, something is wrong with it and I have to send it back. The jamma harness I ordered wasn't labeled properly and was missing components, now the marquee is the wrong damn size.
It happens, but it's getting frustrating because I can't seem to get anywhere with the project. I was hoping to already have a lot more done than I do. But things keep getting in the way.
Looks really good.

Apologies for this project not having a whole lot of interesting updates. I just seem to keep hitting brick walls that keep me from making any significant progress. :banghead:
Decided I'm gonna keep the oversized marquee and build a lightbox for it to display in the living room. Make some lemonade from them lemons. Next one I order I'm making sure I specify the size. I just asked that it be printed to the original marquee dimensions...so totally my fault on that.
The lightbox will hopefully look something like this:
(http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt94/gatsugodhand/Mortal%20Kombat%201%20Cab%20project/0d30653e5fce0f939bfceec6c39cb300_zps4066b43e.jpg) (http://s601.photobucket.com/user/gatsugodhand/media/Mortal%20Kombat%201%20Cab%20project/0d30653e5fce0f939bfceec6c39cb300_zps4066b43e.jpg.html)
Shouldn't take too much. I've got an MDF board and extra plexi laying around so this'll be a relatively quick and easy afternoon project.
So tomorrow I'm heading over to a buddies house to borrow his tools, workspace to work on the light box and get the 2nd control panel cut out and the plexi cut for it and the original CP. Won't be able to do any drilling until I get the artwork ordered. But at least the panel will be cut, primed, painted and the t-molding slot cut.
I have a question about the control panel. there's a z-shaped metal bracket that runs a long the top of the panel that has a thin bit of foam padding on it. It fills in the space between the CP and the bottom of the monitor area. Is there anywhere I can find this particular bracket? Or will I need to get one made? Or does anyone that has a couple of MK cabs have a spare one they would be willing to sell me? The rest of the mounting bits I'm sure I can just take into home depot or lowes and find.
The soundboard is borked. There's a crystal apparently missing that was cut off of the board, and a few other caps that need to be replaced. My electrician buddy says that those parts are easily found & ordered, so he's gonna find them and try to get the board going. But if he can't, I'll need to invest in a new soundboard.
I'm not too broken hearted about that. I was intending on getting a T-unit board for MK1 anyways so I can upgrade to 5.0 at some point. So it just means I'll be looking for a complete MK1 set. Those aren't rare thankfully. Will just have to set some money aside and keep an eye out.
Also I started working on my MALA layout. What do you guys think? It's 800x600, so hopefully that'll work on the monitor once I get the ArcadeVGA installed and all that.

:badmood:
It rained all day today. So....not a damn thing got done to the CP yet. I did start stripping the vinyl off of the back of the CP box. So I will need to find some new vinyl to replace it. Shouldn't be too hard.
So crossing fingers and hoping that I can get the new CP cut tomorrow. Ordering the artwork for it tonight.
-
FINALLY a little bit of an update.
I am going to continue restoring the cab, but I will be retro-fitting it to work with a Mame PC until I can afford to get all of the artwork printed and get the sound board working again. Nothing that can't be undone will be done to the cab. So it can be returned to a dedicated MK1 cab at any point with little effort.
I got 2 new CP panels cut, and the Mame - 7 button art layout for the control panel printed. I decided to give a local printer a try and it ended up costing about $30 to get the vinyl print and a drill template copy. So not bad. The reason I got 2 panels cut out, one of them is for the mame pc, and the other will be for other arcade systems like the Neo Geo MVS and Sega Naomi. I eventually want to acquire those systems.
Here's the Mame panel temporarily fixed with the drill template on it to see how it'd fit. Looks pretty good. I wanted to keep the original style artwork since this is also a restoration project.
(http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt94/gatsugodhand/Mortal%20Kombat%201%20Cab%20project/drill_template_zps182b9a96.jpg) (http://s601.photobucket.com/user/gatsugodhand/media/Mortal%20Kombat%201%20Cab%20project/drill_template_zps182b9a96.jpg.html)
And the new artwork printout. I won't be applying this until I get the holes drilled, the t-molding slot cut, and the board painted.
(http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt94/gatsugodhand/Mortal%20Kombat%201%20Cab%20project/7-buttonlayout_zps16dc9a66.jpg) (http://s601.photobucket.com/user/gatsugodhand/media/Mortal%20Kombat%201%20Cab%20project/7-buttonlayout_zps16dc9a66.jpg.html)
Here's a jpg low quailty version of the 7 button mame panel layout. The reason for 7 buttons....well. 6 buttons for Street Fighter stuff, the run button for traditional MK3, UMK3 and MK4 and then the bottom row with the run button can be used for Neo-Geo stuff.
(http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt94/gatsugodhand/Mortal%20Kombat%201%20Cab%20project/MortalKombatMKICPO7BTN_zps22e05173.jpg) (http://s601.photobucket.com/user/gatsugodhand/media/Mortal%20Kombat%201%20Cab%20project/MortalKombatMKICPO7BTN_zps22e05173.jpg.html)
I also started stripping the black material off of the control panel box. Not sure what would be a suitable replacement. But the reason I'm removing it is because the material has started bubbling up and coming off anyway. So I figured it'd be better to strip it off completely and apply a new layer of material.
Would anyone suggest something suitable to use for that?
Also. The metal brackets on the MK control panels, does anyone know where I can get those? Besides buying a complete panel on ebay?
And finally...the coin door only has 1 mech in it. Where can I get another mech that will fit this particular coin door?
(http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt94/gatsugodhand/Mortal%20Kombat%201%20Cab%20project/coinmech_zps771a77b0.jpg) (http://s601.photobucket.com/user/gatsugodhand/media/Mortal%20Kombat%201%20Cab%20project/coinmech_zps771a77b0.jpg.html)
I google searched the number on the mech itself and just got an ebay auction based in Canada. And it's a little out of my price range. lol.
(http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt94/gatsugodhand/Mortal%20Kombat%201%20Cab%20project/coinmechcloseup_zps1cdc2731.jpg) (http://s601.photobucket.com/user/gatsugodhand/media/Mortal%20Kombat%201%20Cab%20project/coinmechcloseup_zps1cdc2731.jpg.html)
That's it for now. I have to buy a new drill and a flush trim bit for my Ryobi router before I can do any more to the control panel. That may be a couple weeks from now. Been having some health issues and the doctors visits are gnawing on my wallet a good bit.
-
Managed to get a little bit done today. Blood sugar was kinda high so couldn't do all I wanted, and the drill I was borrowing from a friend to use, wasn't quite powerful enough to do the job I needed.
In any case. I got the plexi mounted to the mame panel board and trimmed with the router & flush trim bit. (I <3 my router). Took all of 5 seconds once I got it setup.
Drilled all the plexi mounting screw holes, and the guide holes for the joysticks and button holes. Managed to get 1 & 1/2 holes drilled out with my 1 1/4" spade bit. But the drill wouldn't power through it. So I have to either see if I can try to use my dad's drill press, or find a more powerful drill. Or at least one not battery operated.
It looks like in the pictures that the spade bit messed up the plexi, but it did not. I did decide though (just in case) to remove the plexi and just use the guide holes I drilled to make the holes. I'll just the flush trim bit later to flush out the button and joystick holes. Shouldn't be a problem. I forgot that's how I did it with all the joystick projects I worked on a while back. It's easier than trying to push through the plexi and mdf.
All that's left is drilling out all the holes, cleaning up the edges, cutting the t-molding slot, putting the artwork on, mounting the joysticks and buttons and wiring it all up.
Now pictures. :P

You own a router but not a drill? Man up and spend the $10 at Harbor Freight, dude.
-
The router was given to me as an xmas gift a year or so ago. I had a drill, but it died. Which is why I was borrowing one from a friend until I could afford to get a new one.
So get off me dude. :lol
-
so the marquee from GoG was too big or too small?
-
Marquee ended up being too big.
-
Marquee ended up being too big.
razor blade will fix that ;)
I asked because I just picked up a Mortal Kombat cab, and Im missing the marquee (and I need a CPO too)
-
nah it won't really fix that. If I try to cut it down to size, it cuts into the lettering of the logo. So I'm gonna have to get it reprinted at a smaller size.
-
that makes me sad cause now I dunno where Im gonna get the art from :(
There is a guy on ebay....
-
You can tell GoG a custom size you want printed. In my case, the description for the marquee said "printed to original size", so I put in the instructions, print to original art size, instead of the actual measurements because I figured...it if says printed to original size it'll be right. Apparently you can't take that for granted. Which was my fault really because I could have just told them 25" x 7" and it would have been okay.
So just tell them the dimensions you need and you should be alright hopefully.
-
I'm trying to clean off the original control panel. Pulled up the old graphic and it left behind all the adhesive goop on the metal. So I went to home depot and got some Goo Gone. Sprayed it down and let it sit for about 4 hours. Came back to it and tried rubbing some of it off with a rag, none of the adhesive came up.
Should I just put some more on and let it sit longer? Or try to go at it with a razor blade or paint scraper?
-
Heat gun and a scraper. Then get what's left with goo gone. I've never let goo gone sit for that long though
-
Heat gun and a scraper. Then get what's left with goo gone. I've never let goo gone sit for that long though
I tried letting the goo-gone set overnight to see if it made any difference. Nope. So I'll give the heatgun + scraper combo a try.
Did get the t-molding slot cut on the mame panel. But had a major setback because the spade bit I was using to drill the plexi out, cracked the ever living h3ll out of it. Basically what I did was drill a small pilot hole, then was gonna use a spade bit that is about the same size as my flush trim bit to drill a little bit larger hole, dip the router in there and flush trim the button hole. But the spade bit I used has an odd tip that gripped the plexi as it went in and twisted it enough to crack. So...bummer. That bit is going back to home depot this evening.
Thankfully I have enough plexi left for a re-do. But it was disheartening enough for me to call it a day for today. So I'll be tackling it again next weekend. I've gotta order some wire and disconnects anyways because apparently nowhere in my area carries 22 gauge wire and the female disconnects I need.

I just use a dremel to do the holes on plexi.
As for wiring... Just buy a $10 jamma harness from ebay then cut the wires off the edge connector. Saves SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much time.

What bit do you use on the dremel for that? Hopefully I've got it already.
Jamma harness. Yes. Dude. Thank you. You saved me a butt load of time and headache. They even come with the ground wire chain and quick disconnect already on. :notworthy:

Got a little more work done on the control panel today. Though sadly the artwork I had printed wasn't cut straight, so it wouldn't fit the panel. So next time (since I'm using plexi over it anyway) I will get it printed with a bleed, and without the adhesive backing.
But I did get everything routed and ready. So the joysticks will fit nicely, recessed under the panel.
Got the control panel box completely stripped. I'll probably be stripping the front section around the coin door tonight.
For the sideart, should I remove the original artwork first or just put the new artwork overtop of the old?
Here's a couple of pics of my small amount of progress.

Looks good. Did you use 1 1/4" or 1 1/8" bit for the stick holes? Looks like they are 1 1/8." They are supposed to be 1 1/4." Also, make sure you route out a gap around the joystick holes for the dust washers, unless you plan to have them on top of the plexi instead.
-
Thanky. It took a lot more work than it should have to get it to this point.
I used 1 1/8" for all the holes. Does it need the extra space for stick motion? Just curious because I haven't had any issues with 1 1/8" holes for the competition sticks before.
I'm gonna put the dust washers on top of the plexi to cover up my crappy routing skills. lol.
As for the side art, did you remove the original art from your MK1 before you installed the new side art? Or did you just cover up the original?

1 1/8" should be ok, but all the factory machines had a 1 1/4" hole. I sanded down my original sides to make them as smooth as possible, painted them black to reveal any imperfections I needed to re-sand and then applied the art. If you go that route, make sure it's a high-gloss paint so you have the best chance for maximum artwork adhesion.

Ah so it would be better to remove the old art then. I don't have the space in my apartment to lay it out and paint it. Not a good idea to paint indoors anyway. So I may need to transport it somewhere to work on temporarily when I get to that point.
As for the dust washers on the original control panel, since the joysticks are mounted under, is it layered between the metal plate and wood? Or is it between the wood and the joystick?

No, you don't want to remove the old art. The new art will not stick very well to the rough wood under the original factory art. Just sand it down (not completely off, just to make is smooth) and install the new art over it. You don't have to paint the sides if you don't want to. I do just to help me see the areas that I might need to work on more to smooth out.
The original washers are between the metal panel and the wood in a little routed out area around the joystick hole.

Ah that's good. I wasn't looking forward to possibly having to move the cab somewhere else to paint it. Last time I left a project at someone elses place, it ended up being ruined.
Thanks again for all your help and info. It is IMMENSELY appreciated.

You're more than welcome. I know how frustrating it can be having a project stall because there's know one to help.
