Title: Using projectors with Lightgun games?
Post by: TacticalChaos on March 07, 2014, 03:56:08 pm
Over the holidays I've seen some cheaper lcd projectors pop up in the stores and it got me thinking (painful yes I know).  I am fully aware that most of these have low tv resolutions, which at first made me think that it would suck for video games. Then it occurred to me that most arcade lightgun games are low resolution anyway.  So I curious if anyone would know how well one of these would work with the current pc "lightguns". Seems like it would be real cool with a near lifesize (well closer to life size anyway) targets on the wall. Would there be a problem with sheer size of the screen, etc?

First off I'll admit I haven't tried it with my projector. But, supposedly, if you get the "large" light bar it will work (better) with projectors. I bought the "large" bar hoping that it would help my scenario. Unfortunately, I find that I have to be back too far for the particular way I want to use the light gun (on an LCD in portrait mode) that makes it unusable. So, it might be a case where you need to test out your particular scenario and see if it works.

as lond as it is a gun with a light bar, it should be fine.  i used my 102" projector screen to play gun games on my wii (house of the dead, ghost squad, etc) and it worked well, and was a lot of fun.  i had to modify my sensor bar to make it wider.

The only problem you might run into is distance to screen.  When I used my Wii gun on a projector it didn't work - I was far enough away that the sensor in the wii-mote saw the lightbar as a single light.  Fixed the problem by, and I love this..., placing 2 votive candles in front of the screen a couple feet apart.  Worked like a charm.

I am in a 16ft wide room and I have had trouble with Topgun3, whereas Wiimotes and RG1 have been so-so, for my 10ft screen.    I have not worked with rg1 for a while but at 12ft it had to be used like the positional guns at found mounted on some arcades, wheras wiimotes have been good at multiple positions for projector or smallscreen, and topgun has worked very well independent of position for smaller screens /  further positions as well.  I use a remote sensor bar from monoprice as my wiimote sensor bar.

You could use these sensors, they work great. I luv these things.  They are small & almost hidden.
 1" x .5" x .25" rectangular each one.
And the Bonus, "Sensor eyes were designed with projectors in mind."  :D ;D :o

Nextronics sensor eyes
Sensor eyes were designed with projectors in mind. Simply expose the adhesive back and stick sensor eyes to your wall or television/screen edge. Sensor eyes replace your conventional sensor bar. Made for both short and long range play, you can adjust the distance between the sensor eyes to fine tune range and jitter control.

Be careful playing games like HOTD on the projector.  Two sessions of that and I was wanting to chuck my cookies.  :o

I'm not sure how cheap you were thinking, with the low res led projectors in mind but I thought I'd share the one I just picked up. 310 pounds, 3200 lumens (or 3000 depending on what part of the writeup you want to believe)  and 1280x800 resolution. Nice long life and built in freeview.

Seemed to be the cheapest at a higher res than 800x600 that I could find :)

Nice to hear about the sensors here :)

Edit: Oh and 2000:1 contrast too, seemed a lot for the money to me. I guess you'd have seen by clicking the link anyway, and just for the record its of no difference to me if anybody buys one of these or not :D

The best way to play lightgun games with a projector would be to use a triple CRT based projector and a true lightgun.   You would need to be really motivated to go this route, due to the expense, set-up, etc...but it would probably work.  I have one of these units in storage and will likely try it at some point.
