Title: Properly updating a rom/mame set? Also running CHDs from USB??
Post by: willybeamish on February 18, 2014, 11:18:44 am
-So I recently went from having a Mame 146 set to the 152. I downloaded MameUI32 and Mame for 152 without nag and high scores enabled and a few other things. I got a full 152 rom set without the CHDs. Im currently using hyperspin so I updated the MAME.XML so HS would reflect the new games. Im wondering about the BIOS files should those be included in the ROM set I grabbed? Do those even need to be updated? Am I missing anything else? Im sure I need updated artwork and what not but that can wait till later.

-Had another question as well. I kinda wanted to grab all the CHDs but my HD isnt that big and I was wondering if it would be feasable to run a external HD for the CHD's?

Thanks

up to date bios files would have been included in the full romset you downloaded.

Only a small fraction of the CHDs are playable.  If you narrow it down to the ones that actually work, then further narrow it down to what is playable on your pc, you'll probably end up with a few GB worth of them.

Damn that sucks to hear since the CHD folder for 152 is like 300 gb lol. Is there a set name I should be looking out for with the CHD files with all the working ones?

Not that I'm aware of.  Even if there were a set of only working ones, the bulk of it would be rhythm games (guitar freaks, ddr) which you probably don't have the controls for anyway.

I just download them all, then copy the ones I'll actually use to the cab.

Here I'll help. Get both killer instincts and the Area51/Max force chds.  The rest either don't work, are rhythm games, or just aren't very fun.

Yeah forgot about those.  They aren't massive download though, just a few hundred megs a pop.

There's also the Gauntlet games ( Dark Legacy and Legends ) and NFL Blitz if your system can run them.

Rather than download the entire set you can find them on a certain " Internet Archive" site and they have tyhem in sets of a couple letters per set that you can then select individual files from for download by Clicking where it says "To browse the collection online, click here."

Why not use something like ROM Lister to cut down the rom list to only stuff that works on your cab: http://www.waste.org/~winkles/ROMLister/ (http://www.waste.org/~winkles/ROMLister/)

Ive tried using that thing in the past couldn't figure it out got mad and gave up. Hence why I have 1000's of games that I have to scroll threw that I wont ever play to get some good ones. Granted this is why I setup Favorites on Hyperspin.

As far as CHDs im currently running SF iii 3rd strike which I like alot and also the Simpsons bowling game which is not bad. We usually end playing World Class Bowling which seems to work the best with a trackball. Im not really interesting in the rhythm games like you guys. Isnt Area 51 a shooter? I dont have a lightgun setup..one day I might try it. Im not sure if my machine can Blitz but ill try it out. Ill check Redearth and the Gauntlet games. Sounds like im better off cherry picking the CHDs for the good ones.

Blitz and gauntlet originally used "49-way" joysticks... If you have analog sticks they should work fine, but if you've got normal 8-ways I'm not sure how well they'd play.

Yep -- problem is most of the Torrents have them in compressed rar files that you can not pick and choose in - but if you can find the individual files it's much faster and less bandwidth intensive to just get the ones you want !

They did originally have 49-way sticks, although I'm not sure if those are even supported in newer MAME builds.
They were once upon a time, but I seem to remember it being dropped at some point.

IIRC, there's a dip switch setting on Blitz to switch the machine to 8-way joysticks.

They both work fine with my 8-ways.

Interesting, I didn't realize blitz had an official option for 8-way sticks.

I'm sure they both RUN fine with 8-ways but it's a matter of having a lot less precise control when you play the game.

I know it probably doesn't make a difference to a lot of people but I typically find it annoying as hell when I can't reach the scores I'm used to getting because the controls are holding me back.

Yep it does have the setting in the Dip switches menu. On the original arcade version of Blitz 99 it also had the setting on Dip switch 9.

Quote
JOYSTICKS: (dip 9)
 - 8-Way*                                                  OFF
 - 49-Way                                                   ON

I'm using 0.149 but should be the same -- for the chds I have both cap-wzd-5.chd and cap-wzd-3.chd in the redearth folder and then in the redearth.zip folder is redearth_euro.29f400.u2 and launch using Red Earth (EURO 961121) from mameui64

Thanks for the help it worked like a charm. I played it for a few minutes before going to bed and it seems pretty awesome.
