Hi All,
I recently picked up an XBox 360 that had RROD (£20 eBay). I did a lot of research first for fixes and decided to go for the heat-gun reflow fix. This worked and I have a fully working console.
Now, the only thing is the fan / fan speed - ITS SO LOUD!
I know that this is a common problem with some, and again I have done a lot of research regarding mods (outside side fans etc). I also invested in a Talismoon fan, but this made no difference at all.
However, some say that they do not have a fan noise problem at all - I can only assume from this that their fans do not run at the same speed as mine (and others) and their Xbox does not go to 100% - maybe 30% - 40%.
The problem seems to be that when the Xbox is switched on from COLD, the fan goes from 0% to 100% speed in the matter is 30 seconds. I have seen that software mods allow the user to change the % of the speed fan, but I really don't want to go down this route. I would rather try something like below using a resistor to maybe half the fan be speed (obviously not this connection).
I know that some may say that this is risky (overheating), but I am pretty thorough and am prepared to monitor temps etc. If things seem to be getting a little toasty, then fine, I'll remove it.
The fan is so loud that it just causes a problem.
So, does anyone have any experience on this / advice / tips?
Thanks all

run it off 5 volts instead then.

I just replaced the fan. They are cheap and the bearings go south very quick. If you did a heatgun fix and it worked, then the board was probably over heated to begin with (most likely from heavy dust buildup) and the bearings have been cooked. Just swap in a new $2 fan and be done with it.

@lilshawn... yea I was wondering about that - I'd seen that there was a 5 volts... I'll have to look into that.
@slippyblade already did that - as I said in the post, I tried a Talismoon "silent fan" and it was virtually identical. That just doesn't work unfortunately.

Well if you have reflowed it and it works then I would not risk another rrod down the road and submerge it in mineral oil.
It will make your Xbox quiet and take care of any thermal issues.
The question would be on the cost on the tank, the oil and pump.
The power brick alone is worth £20 so I would say you got a pretty good deal. :)
