How exactly do these work?
For example, what makes one key different from the others?
I could understand if it had come circuitry inside it, but this thing only has an in and out.
The only thing I can think of is that it resonates a certain frequency or something.
Is there some way to reprogram them from an older version (ruby) to a newer version (jade)?

I dont have a maxx key to verify, but you could use ibcm (ibutton copy machine) to backup your key. You would need a DS9097U-S09/009 to read it out though.
