Title: Ppv's not first project: The Token Muncher
Post by: ppv on October 31, 2013, 01:17:56 pm
Hi BYOAC community!

This is not my first post here, but I will make this my formal introduction to the board. My handle is Ppv (short for Papavader, my old handle way back from when I was lurking on the Originaltrilogy forum), a 39ish years old frenchie from the Montreal region in Quebec. I am a tech support  guy and  I have a background in coding, but am nowhere as good as some people here. I have an interest in art and I have acceptable skills as an image hacker, but not much else.  I am a long time emulation follower and gamer.

I am here because I want to start my own project for me and my autistic son who is in love with arcade machines! I do not have much previous woodworking experience (a train table) but I think I can pull it off.

The Project:

I will base my project on Ond's wonderful "Metropolis" design. Since depth was a huge factor in the wife accepting this, I am going to use a 4:3 19" Lcd tv, which will fits the Metropolis like a glove, I think.
So far, since I need to find all my tools first, I haven't started any wood working yet, but I started doing the rest: art and software.

I wanted my project to be original(ish)  ::) so I racked what little brain I have and came up with this name: The Token Muncher. I already wanted to do something with Pac-Man as I feel it is the quintessential icon of arcade games. I toyed with ideas until I stumbled on the name and now I got this:

Next up: The Front end...

Liking the artwork. Be careful on buying wood working tools. You can go off the deep end pretty quick. Jig saw and router and drill. Used on craigslist can be had for under $75 US total.  Good luck.

Thanks guys!

I really only will buy the Jigsaw, my Brother in law will loan me the router, but i'll have to buy the bits. My father will provide the rest (saw horse, table saw, drill, ect.)

The Front End: Part 1

I wanted a consistent but diversified FE for the many subsections I compiled to navigate my game list.  I will be using Atomic, because I have a need for a parental control function and MALA didn't have one. Otherwise I would have chosen MALA.

Classics Games:
Was going for my main theme. Use a tweaked Pac Man maze.

Sports Games:
Went with Neo Turf Masters for no particular reasons. Added a faked sports broadcast feel. Not 100% satisfied...

Beat 'Em Ups:
Golden Axe. Of Course. One of my old favorites in the Arcades and one I played on many systems (including c64! ;p)

Shmups:
Used elements from Gradius 3 (because it suited my needs!)

Return of the Zombie Thread's revenge!

Boy was this along time! As for these things go, life got in the way. Father died, autistic son is a lot of work (but wonderful nonetheless)

Looking at this, I'm not sure I still like the look of that front end. Hugh :dizzy:
But the Marquee stays.

I also be switching frontend, as I recently dabbled with Attract Mode and loving it!
I will soon star a new thread projet for a bartop, but this one will be updated very soon as I will be building them almost at the same time.

This will get done this summer though! After all you can only rise once from the dead...

Attract Mode is my current favorite, good choice.

It's so easy to work with, it just makes a lot of sense to use it. That, and its fast to boot. Will go with a modified Nevato skin, like I am doing on the bartop.
