So, i just found out in another thread here that Raiden 2 is not properly emulated. At least I can play that from my PS1 Raiden Project disc. I think it even works vertically. I was under the impression that all the PS1 collection (this, Xevious 3D/G, Namco Museum) games were emulated rather than ported, but now I find out I may be wrong.
Anyway, what other non-modern games are not emulated too well in MAME (or some other emulator like Daphne, etc)? that do have a decent PC or console version that can be used in it's place?
I'll start:
Raiden II- PlayStation- The Raiden Project
The Genji & Heike Clans (English version of Genpei Toma Den, not in MAME, I think)- PlayStation- Namco Museum Vol 4
Legend of the Valkyrie (English Valkyrie no Densetsu, same as above)- PlayStation- Namco Museum Vol 5

Most PSX stuff is ported, any emulation is minimal at best and wrapped in a lot of HLE rewriting significant parts of the game (almost always the entire sound system). Keep in mind the original Playstation had a 33mhz CPU, such low clock speeds simply aren't suitable for proper emulation. It also had a pathetic amount of RAM, and to properly emulate something you need to be able to load the entire romset. There were some emulators people ported to the PSX (a NES one from memory) but performance tended to be woeful, fidelity and compatibility likewise.
There are a couple of things that are emulated in official packs that have ended up in MAME due to them being bootlegged (MAME documents this) or if not in MAME in some of the unofficial versions of MAME. Keep in mind that the Virtual Console emulators and the like tend to not represent real hardware properly tho, so games often ended up with hacks applied causing them to function incorrectly when used on the real hardware or in MAME.
You might want to add 'Defender 2' to your list, it's in some of the Williams packs and is actually just Stargate, but they weren't allowed to use the name 'Stargate'
You can run the PSX version of Raiden 2 in UME / MESS if you want (the MESS playstation emulation has advanced quite a lot in the last year) and yes you can use MAME's screen rotation options there combined with the TATE / rotation option in the game to play it in vertical mode with the correct arcade resolution on your horizontal monitor. Of course it's still just a port, so some things are a bit different to the real arcade anyway.

Thanks. The reason I thought a lot of them were emulated was that on the PS1 Namco Museums, you can change DIP switches, rotate the screen in vertical games and other things you can't do on the PS2 and newer museums.

I enjoy playing the Raiden DX PS1 port, which also contains screen rotations. Unfortunately, it was only released in Japan.
