Title: Router Flush Trim/Template Bit

Is this flush trim/template bit suitable for 2x 3/4" MDF so that the bottom sheet is a template for the top sheet?

i.e. is 1" length enough so that the 3/4" is cut and the bearing rolls along the bottom -precut (template) sheet?

If indeed that is how it works!

I am presuming that you do not have a router table.

That would work, but they are showing those bits as for Table mounted router. On a table you would have the template on the bottom.

But if you are handling the router the bearing needs to ride along the template and you need the template on the top for that one.   

The Flush Bits on the site show as use for Laminate but will not have a problem with mdf .
I would get one of those and one of these.

Please stay away from the cheapass Silverline bits, they are god awful. The blades/bearing don't run concentric to the shaft and they cut awfully. If you insist on using them I have a box of brand new ones you can have for free.

[Whiteside (http://www.routercutter.co.uk/flush-trim-straight-cut)] bits are excellent and are great value for money.

Thanks both. I'll avoid the Silverline bit then (a clamp of theirs was also god-awful!) but the size/dimensions is what I'm after (and how to do it!) so thanks both..

A cutter with a 1" length blade is ideal for cutting 3/4" MDF.

As Drnick said, you want a flush trim bit with the bearing on the end of the bit. I use flush trim bits 95% of the time, the only time I use pattern bits is when I'm cutting recesses.

If you wanted a 1/2" diameter bit with a 1" cutting edge from that Whiteside page you would want #2402 if you wanted one with a 1/4" shank or #2405 if you wanted one with a 1/2" shank.

I went for an Erbauer bit in the end, from screwfix. Seemed to be rated, hopefully its decent:

Does say for laminate, but I understand that's fine for MDF.

That will do the job. And be good for many more jobs in the future.
