Title: Copy of Little Ms. Pac-Man
Post by: Sshado on April 20, 2013, 02:22:10 pm
I am using the plans that Maximus (Griffindodd) supplied to build a duplicate of his Little Ms. Pac-Man build:

Final shot (future project (better camera) ;) ):

Since I am no graphic artist, I will be using his supplied graphics as well. Just think of this as a test build using his plans - hopefully, I will do it justice  ;)

Yes, I knew this build would be a tough one to take on before I started, but I already ordered all of the parts and must follow through. What else could I build with a bunch of pink parts :P

Thanks, I am sure you will be getting some questions from me, I started this thread so I could stop hijacking your other thread  ;)

I have been running into issue after issue. First, I got the cutout printouts done at FedEx Office. The prints had some lines cut off :( I worked with it though. Then, I bought a Dremel Trio, hoping it would cut better than a JigSaw, wrong... Then I used a jigsaw, and I SUCK with that. Only after I did all the cutting did I think of just measuring the lengths so I could just use a circular saw  :banghead:

Anyway, after figuring out some of the measurements (just the rectangular pieces), I re cut those pieces with a circular saw, much better. Here is how it looks so far:

looks like a good start..

Hey Griff, when (and why) did you change your name? So are you the artist formerly know as Griffindodd?

I tried fitting my 22" Chimei LCD since I can't find the Samsung 214t anywhere. It is much narrower and a little longer (possibly too long). It is about 19.5 inches and it looks like I only have about 19 inches to work with. I may be able to finagle some of the cuts to squeeze it in there and then modify the bezel art so it looks right. Otherwise, I may keep looking for a 214t.

On a side note, I already have almost $500 into this build (with my own LCD) and I still need the acrylic, laminate, and graphics. Speaking of graphics, I sent a couple of messages to Game on Grafix, and still have received no response. I contacted another place and got back to me with a full quote of about $140 (pre-laminated).

Hey Griff, when (and why) did you change your name? So are you the artist formerly know as Griffindodd?

Maximus is my RL nick, and as we put together the Arcade Icons team I wanted to use that moving forward so figured I better make the change now before I have even more threads under the griffindodd name. Griffin Dodd is just my last names, but I'm never going to get all the sexy ladies with a name like that.....oh wait this is a geeky old guys arcade forum.....oh well  >:D

Scott gets busy I know that so he can't always respond quickly. $140 sounds about right, I think that's about what I paid with GoG.

OK, I hope this isn't a dumb question, but I received my 60 n 1 board, wiring harness, and Arcade Switching Power Supply, but how do you actually power it up? I thought it was going to be super easy, just connect the harness to the 60 n 1 board, plug the monitor into the board and plug it into the power supply, and power it up (of course connect the buttons and stuff too).

I will do some more searching on the forums as I am sure other people have had the same question, but I wanted to post it here too.

You just have to use a molex hd power connector that will mate with your 60 in 1 for power.   It is wired for 5V 12V and ground from your arcade supply.  The arcade supply needs ac power and a ground for the AC not the DC ground.

Here you go, you can see where the harness runs to the switched power supply...

I thought it was going to be super easy, just connect the harness to the 60 n 1 board, plug the monitor into the board and plug it into the power supply, and power it up (of course connect the buttons and stuff too).

You can wire the power supply into the JAMMA harness or into a Molex connector that plugs into the 60-in-1 board.  Either will work.  Plugging in the power supply should power things on, unless you wire in a switch (which I would recommend, if you know how to do it.)

Here you go, you can see where the harness runs to the switched power supply...

This is for Sshado, but I suppose everyone could learn from it: that key is not enforced in most JAMMA harness edge connectors.  Making the connector fit on the board is not enough to know that it is connected properly.  Those connectors are very low precision in that it is possible to seat the connector on the board upside down or even in a way the connector pins can bridge connectors on the board.  You must take care to seat it properly and look at it fairly closely to make sure it's aligned properly.

I can't tell you how many boards and fuses I've seen fry because care was not taken to connect harnesses to boards.  The newer JAMMA standard eliminates this using properly keyed connectors, but is pretty rarely seen, in my experience.

So, take care.  After you've done it a few times you'll get adept at it and you'll be able to tell at a glance if it's plugged in properly, but for now take care.  The 60-in-1 is an inexpensive board but you don't want to fry it out of haste.

Subscribed.  Can you show more of the 60-in-1 board connections and setup once you get them started?  I'll be using a similar setup in a bartop and I'd like to see what I'm getting into.

OK, a two part question with pictures:

Here is the 60in1 board:

Here is the board with jamma connector (is this the way it connects) - it is in Chinese :( ?

Here is the power supply:

What is throwing me off, is how does it get power, there is no plug for an outlet.  And looking at the inside of Maximus's unit, I don't see PC power supply:

Just a heads up- I've had three wires break on that same type of harness- 5v, 12v, and ground. I had to resolder them to the pins.

yeah this harness is not the highest quality harness i've seen.  they're certainly inexpensive, and for most people they are good enough, but they're not the best harnesses out there.

Couple more questions for Maximus:

1. On the wiring harness, do you just disconnect the wires you are not going to use (to clear up clutter)?
2. How did you wire up the fans?

On a side note, I hooked up the controllers and played a quick game of Ms. Pacman and tried out a couple others, works great, even has sound :)

Don't forget the Ground (or Field Ground (FG)).  Also check your power settings.  Are you in the states?  Looks like it if defaulted to 220v!

Sorry I missed this. I clipped away all the unused wires. I just tapped my fans to the 12v line on the switched power supply, same with my LEDs

Yes, I have been searching high and low for the Samsung 214t 21.3" display. My 22" ChiMei is a tad too long. It has been a small part of my stall on building this. If anyone has one for sale, let me know. Only the screen needs to be in perfect shape.

I was able to talk the guy down to $80 and I pick up the monitor today. I can't seem to get the kind of deals Maximus gets though, how do you find these deals  ???

29" Ultrawide LCD's for just over $200
Samsung 21.3" LCD for $60

I did find a step up 51" Plasma shipped for the same price as you  ;D

OK, a couple of quick questions for Maximus:

1) How did you hold everything together, from the pics it looks like L-brackets.
2) The L piece on the inside, is the length supposed to reach the grill panel? I ask, because I followed your template and they don't reach...

It seems like it should reach so that the grill panel could connect to it.

Hiya,

Yeah I manage to get things cheap because I work in I.T. and get to stare at a computer screen all day, when t's slow I troll eBay.

To answer your questions,

1 - yes small L-brackets.
2 - Yes it should, probably my mis-measurement, I think I just filled the gap with some bubblegum and an old boot lace (and you guys thought my builds were well thought out...fools!!!!!!!  >:D )

Picked up the monitor and it fits perfectly :) Laminate came already, so I laminated the sides and routed the t-slots. Hopefully tomorrow I can work on the control panels and the grill panels. I can't work on the angled piece for the coin and start buttons until I either get a 30 / 60 Chamfer bit or borrow a friends table saw - I think that is going to be the toughest part of this build ;)

Unless it's a super accurate tablesaw I wouldn't bother, you'd be better off with a circular saw and clamped guide. Although adding a 60/30 Chamfer to your collection of router bits is always a good investment.

Do you find more use in a circular saw or table saw, for straight-line cuts, overall?

These days I never use my table saw, I'd rather clamp up a guide and use either a router, circular or more often than not a jigsaw, I can cut within 1mm tolerance with a jigsaw over a pretty decent distance so my need for a table saw is usually reduced to quick rips of long stems

+1.  I generally use a straight cut piece of 3/4" plywood (It's a 5 ft. x 4" wide piece) as my straight edge.  But, I'm thinking of one of these:

I still need to get some practice with my router.

Very cool, original design.

Is it heavy enough to stay in place during hard/fast action on the joysticks?  If not, maybe some little suction cups on the bottom or added weight?

Obviously not my original design (as the title suggests), but it is definitely heavy enough. You can also see it in the videos of the original builds thread:

Better than I would have done without a drill press.

I'll be looking for CNC help if I do something like this.  alignment errors draw my eye very quickly.

Quick update, here it is so far. Tonight I will trim the monitor support down so that it is where it belongs. Maybe work on the speaker and fan placement too.

Looks great so far, do you have it set for left handed use the CP looks all reversed

Yes I used 1/4 acrylic over the screen but just laminated CP vinyl on the control panels

Heh, funny. I reversed the picture because I was trying to avoid you pointing out that the power inlet was in the wrong spot ;) (it actually isn't, I just need to flip the side panel) ... I will re-reverse the picture

Also, was it CLEAR acrylic or a slight grey or smoked?

I believe it was clear if i remember the picture.  I'm sure the man himself can answer if I'm wrong.  Or if I'm not.

Funny.

I used clear because I didn't want the colors in the bezel artwork to be altered by the acrylic color as they are so close in proximity to the side art.

Those feet look nicer than the ones I used just make sure they have some kind of grip to them.

I have a question about artwork. When you receive it, is there room for adjustment and then just trim off the excess?
Title: Re: Copy of Little Ms. Pac-Man

There's about 1/4" bleed but I wouldn't say that's much room for adjustment

OK, I bought some Acrylic and attempted to cut it down to size. Of course it didn't break perfectly, so I tried cutting the chips off and now I have a jagged edge. What is a good way to smooth the edge? Like with what tool? I tried a dremel with a bunch of different tips with no luck...

I cut my plastics with a router, just set up a straight edge clamped down tight and run the router across it for a perfect smooth cut. If you want the edges of the acrylic to be glassy you can flame-polish them with a butane torch, look that up on YouTube for some videos showing you how.

OK, I also ordered the service and test buttons along with the handles. I plan on having both fans blow in and then the handles act as vents. Total cost is now $725.

To finish it off, I have sent Corybee a message about the serial plate.

I want to give Griffindodd credit for the design, so I asked him the following for the serial plate:

Hi, I am currently building a copy of the Little Ms. Pac-Man that Griffindodd (Maximus) built. I am almost done with it but could use a serial plate. If you are able to make me one, could I basically get a copy of what you made for him, with two minor changes:

1 - instead of where it says Griffin Dodd & Co., Ltd.
      change it to:
      Designed by Griffin Dodd
      Built by Weizguy

2 - SERIAL NO. WEI-00001

I think the last digit of the serial number should a 2, considering this is the second unit of this particular model that has been built.

But it's the first one that Sshado built, hence the "WEI" part of the S/N as opposed to the "JGD" on the original.

Wow, the router sure cleaned it up nicely. Just like you, I am realizing the router is a VERY useful tool  :afro:

OK, another question for you. How did you attach the bottom? It must be fastened somehow if you are using handles to carry it from the bottom. I was thinking of putting a couple cross bars across and bolting the bottom to it through the feet...

Cool glad the router worked out. I screwed the bottom to the interior frame with brass screws, they look nice against the black laminate

Couple more questions to complete this build:

How did you wire the speakers to the amplifier? I had the speakers connected to the 60n1 card, but now I want to add the amplifier.

Also, how or where do you wire the service / test buttons?

The amp I bought from amazon just had wire terminals so I attached them easily like that... I think, hard to remember now. The service buttons are part of that Jamma Harness, one called test and one called setup.

Hmmm, I looked at your Jamma wiring map and it doesn't snow anything for test or setup. I also looked at the board and don't see a direct connect:

There you go, 15 parts side is the switch line for 'test' and 14 solder side is the switch line for 'service', just ground the other side of the switches and they will work

Quick update, control panels are done and just finished the base. For the base, added the service and test buttons, added the handles, and added the custom pink feet (they will also have pink LED's). Just missing the serial plate (hint, hint Corybee)  ;)

Love those feet, way nicer than mine.

This may be a little late but I've attached a PDF with a bunch of JAMMA labels that you can print out and stick either side of the plug to make it much easier to identify the pins. Not mine, I found it over on KLOV

Anyway, those will come in handy for my future projects :)

I gotta say that this build is a ---smurfette---!! Maximus made it look easy. There are so many little tweaks here and there that need to be considered while building it. I am planning on finishing this up this weekend and will have a couple of pictures.

A couple of issues :( I hooked up the speakers to the amp and I am getting a humming noise? I also do not have the pink dustwashers in due to them being see through and can see my misaligned joystick holes, but I do have the pink LEDs in there...

Also, I am going to have to replace the bezel as I ---fouled up beyond all recognition--- it up   :badmood:

Here are a couple of pictures of how it sits currently. The glowing feet look cool from the bottom, can't see it in the carpet, but you can see a glow on solid floors. I also still have to connect the button LED's.

Title: Re: Copy of Little Ms. Pac-Man
Post by: Maximus on June 01, 2013, 05:35:21 pm
Nice man I think it looks fanstastic!! The glowing feet are a nice touch. WIth the speakers and amp, make sure you dont have the speaker wires running directly next to power wires, that's probably where your hum is coming from, also crank up the volume in the game settings on the 60-in-1 board so you dont have to turn the amp up as high, this will also eliminate ground hum.

Looks like you are almost done, it's weird seeing a clone of mine looking so complete, but a huge compliment that someone else liked it enough to go through the expense and trouble to make one.

Congrats!!
