Title: Mastercraft paint gun on sale $27 this week
Post by: eds1275 on March 06, 2013, 05:10:56 pm
I just picked up the Mastercraft gravity feed spray gun for $27 today. It has two reviews, one excellent and one saying the finish quality is crappy... but in my experience MC tools are decent, but the quality control on them is totally wack - you can buy a great tool or get a lemon and the lemons come more often than they should. Luckily with a great return/replacement policy it has never been a huge deal for me.

I opened it in the car and it feels like a nice quality tool. I will try to review it soon. I have a 2 gallon compressor that I bought for trim nailing that should be able to operate intermittently, letting me paint small parts and get a good idea of how it would run if I can convince my wife I need a bigger compressor.

2 things:

I made some "bezels" to go around my gun holsters on the Spinal Tap cab the other day, and they didn't turn out perectly. Pretty good, but not as good as I'd like. I will be remaking them soon. However, I did just paint them. They almost look like plastic, the finish is so smooth. I will post pics in a bit after they've had time to dry to make sure no funny business shows up.

Of course it started raining so the finish isn't as nice around the rest of it, but here's a close up of the finish I got. Some considerations:

Overall I'm happy with the purchase. It's not perfect but neither were the conditions. I'm not going to fool myself into thinking that there's no reason some other paint guns cost 5-10 times more than this one... but with some practice and better conditions I think a good finish is made easier with this.

I use an electric gun that I clean thoroughly when finished and yeah, I'm with ya man, never painting by hand again except when using a primer or oil based.  Those don't work well in any type of gun, super thick.
