Not much to see just yet, I've been lurking for a while here on the forums and finally signed up.
I've gathered some parts for a cabinet without knowing what Arcade Hit I wanted to build, i came across Sjaak's FIFJ thread and have decided...
as of right now i have the following components for the Cabinet.
Hardware:
-AMD Phenom II x6, 8GB DDR3, GTX560 1GB PC Tower (seems overkill, but again I had no idea what i was going to put in this machine. plus i got a great deal at under $400)
-Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT Joystick
-Handful of Seimitsu PS-14-KN buttons (will have to reorder in proper color)
-Ultimarc I-PAC2 board
I was going to build a cabinet from scratch, but luckily I found a DK cabinet near by at a very affordable price, if things go well I may be a proud new owner!!

As progress is made i will be updating this thread.. Wish me luck guys as this will be my first build, I've been learning every day i get on the internet and though most of you probably think a build may be an easy task, I am not so sharp with my hands.
-
That is a gorgeous DK and it would be a shame to change it. Tantamount to a crime really.
-
I have a DK and POPEYE, It never crossed my mind to mess with them.
Go a route like this instead.

Yeah, that cabinet is in excellent shape. If you start tearing it up to make a Fix-It Felix Jr. replica, don't be surprised at the amount of grief and lack of support that you get for it.
-
And another one bites the dust...
-
He should probably post this thread at KLOV. Much more support there. :laugh2:
-
Yes, build one, the two will look great next to each other
-
And another one bites the dust...
I don't believe any of it.
Nobody commenting on the use of Japanese buttons? :lol
-
Disney's plan is working. Kill all Donkey Kongs.
good day.
-
Yes, build one, the two will look great next to each other
Exactly, you can use the original as a template to create a second one...
-
I've gotta agree with the general sentiment expressed in this thread. If you end up getting it PLEASE don't convert that cab... it looks to be in great shape. A perfect solution would be to use that DK cabinet as a template to create a second machine... you can get really precise cuts and the two cabs will look awesome next to each other.
-
I have to express the same sentiment as everyone so far. Please do not destroy a Donkey Kong cabinet that seems to be in great shape to convert it to something else. :(
That would be like doing this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Poser.JPG) to a Ferrari 250 GTO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrari_250_GTO).
Build a Fix It Felix from scratch instead.
-
i will not be tearing this cab apart, i will be using a jakobud template... the DK cab is mint! works fantastic too. when i saw it in person i couldn't imagine tearing it apart.

Thank the lord, For a while there was panic in my eyes. You should never ever ever tear apart a working DK

Nice! Looking forward to seeing your cab based on the jakobud plans!

Thanks, we can now all look forward to the week-end with a bit less stress. ;)
Can't wait to see the two cabinets side by side.

was pretty late when i got off work but i had to start this cabinet....
went to the local Home Depot and got some 5/8 MDF, got home and laid out some lines
(http://imageshack.us/a/img29/2949/13050584.jpg)
first time ever trying to do wood work, and im pretty excited about how its coming out, i need to sand them together to ensure they are identical but here's what i got so far.... it's gotten really late, so tomorrow i will start cutting more and assembly..

Very nice - did you cut the MDF by hand with a jigsaw? Is working with MDF as dusty as I have heard? Can't wait to see this painted with the artwork installed. Good luck!
-
MDF dust will get everywhere. It is also advised to use a face mask as the dust is somewhat toxic, but yes, you will have MDF, dust boogers for days! I made the mistake of cutting MDF near the open garage as my wife's, black Acura was in it, covered it in dust.. whoops. I bring stuff out, close the door, cut and reopen it..
Nice build so far, can't wait to to see the progress

did the first with the original template by hand via jigsaw, then used the board i cut to outline the second board and cut it via jigsaw... after that i set them up together and sanded them to match. Yes dusty dusty dusty, i've done paint and body for cars and it reminded me of sanding body filler, face mask is a must, not an option. I do all the work out in the back yard and then clean it all off to bring it inside the house.
a few days ago i cut out a few of the center boards and within the next two days i should be cutting out some more boards and assembling, I cant wait to get some more pictures up here. I'm 29 years old and told my parents about my build, they showed up and started helping me and i didnt even ask them to. They seem really excited to play on it. after all that's what it's all about.

made some more progress....

looking good. what's the process of creating the speaker grill?
-
i didnt get the grill cut perfectly, because i suck horribly at jigsaw, but the process is as follows.
1. measurements according to Jagobud's plans
2. double check the measurements
3. drill the outer most parts of the openings
4. Jigsaw "straight" ::) lines connecting the drilled holes.
5. sand to clean up

I take it that you do not have a router to hand. Does this mean the machine will have no T-Molding? Or will you be cutting the T-mold slot with a dremel or similar?

This is sweet! I hope to copy my DK in the same way! I will be following this thread closely!!

I do have a router and slot bit for it, didnt think about using the router for the grill, this is the first time im working with wood, but it wouldn't be complete without t-molding! I already got the proper molding for it as well.
-
Awsome work! Cant wait to see it when its done!

Disney's plan is working. Kill all Donkey Kongs.
They wound up reproducing cabs after they realized what they were doing. I read/heard/saw somewhere that they were looking for DK & Popeye cabinets but found from the folks selling them that doing anything to them that wasn't a period restoration was considered a bad move. They then started building their own cabinets from scratch. This is why most FIFJr. cabinets look very clean on the inside.
With that, this may not be the proper place for this question, but I wanted to ask anyway...
has anyone "reverse engineered" a Nintendo cab like this and produce plans more accurate than the Jakobud plans? From what I've read the Jakobud stuff is not 100% correct. I've looked at the plans and there are a lot of things with measurements shown that don't need measurements shown and things that need measurements shown that don't have measurements shown. For example, the center point of a lot of the radius cuts aren't shown... I consider this a bit sloppy, and I've been looking for more accurate stuff, but I haven't found anything.
So maybe someone SHOULD sacrifice an authentic cabinet so these measurements can be taken and shared. It can be done in a non-destructive way, but you'd have to approach it with an archivist's mindset or you'll miss something. I think the Nintendo cabinets are gorgeous and I think the world needs more of them.
-
so i had a late night working on sprites for Sjaak and watching the end of season 2 king of thrones... i get a phone call in the morning around 10am (trust me thats early considering i went to bed at 6am) so i ignore it, and it keeps on ringing and ringing and ringing..... i finally get frustrated and hop out of bed and answer the phone angrily, "What." my buddy who works for the local cable company says i found an arcade cabinet on the side of the road, i think you might want it, he sends me a pic and instantly i reply "want, now!" and i get it and incredibly its nearly cosmetically complete! i bring it home and set it next to my nearly complete cab.... best spring cleaning trash find ever!

i built mine primarily with Jakobud plans and everything came out near perfect except the speaker cutout, so perfect that the plexi from a nintendo cab fits perfectly on the replica there is also someone on another forum that build a replica that has a load of measurements from a real nintendo cab, this helped me on a couple spots, here is the link http://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?PHPSESSID=d40d5dbf78191b9aa8fc0b3447cfae46&topic=783.15 (http://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?PHPSESSID=d40d5dbf78191b9aa8fc0b3447cfae46&topic=783.15)

Holy crap, that IS an awesome find! Best road kill ever! :D Is it an empty cab or does it still have any equipment? And considering the appearance, I guess now you've got something you can compare measurements to. XD It looks fairly Nintendo-shaped.

it is a true nintendo cab that has been repainted, it is unfortunately missing all electronics with the exception of a lcd timer? im guessing because it was a playchoice 10.... a timer maybe? the timer is complete and unharmed, has a pin-out for a connector but other than that. just the cabinet and the 2 Nintendo licence tags on the back.
-
Hell of a find!
And great job so far on your cab.
I will be watching this build.
-
That is a stroke of luck. Plus coin door! Those are very hard to find, I've been trying to source one or anything similar for my own Felix build. I can find mechs that are very similar easy enough but the door, not so much.
So what's your plan with the Playchoice 10, fix that up too?
...and might as well try, if you're selling I'd buy the door :) :)

im planning to make it a Red DK cabinet.
-
Ahh cool. Did you end up buying the DK at the beginning of this thread too or no? Cause if so you're building up quite the connection.
-
actually i passed on the original DK, i don't know why, because i regret not buying it. either way, its only the beginning. im so pumped up about these cabs, i want to build several more for DKJ, Popeye, Mario, etc. i guess i'll be on these forums for years to come.
-
im planning to make it a Red DK cabinet.
Red is good!

decided that i was going to get new plexi for the DK cabinet restore so i used the plexi from the nintendo cab on my fifj cab, fits perfectly!
since i took this photo, i've already built the base for the cab to sit on, tomorrow i should have the wheels on and the slots cut for the t-molding.
