Title: Easiest path to DosBox setup and integration into front-end?
Post by: BadMouth on January 24, 2013, 08:21:39 pm
I've never messed with DosBox before.

Short version: What is the simplest way to get a DOS game up and running, analog controls mapped, and integrated into my front-end(Mala)?
Ideally, I'd like to use an autohotkey script or batch file.

Long version:

On the comments for the 90's arcade racing game kickstarter, a guy mentions that "Screamer" is the best arcade racing game of the 90's.
Never heard of it before, so I go to youtube and find out that it was a DOS game in the style of Ridge Racer.
Screamer (DOS) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBs-PhfxNMs#)

Looks pretty cool!

So I search for the game and it comes up on Amazon, but the description says it's for windows XP.
I couldn't find any mention of an XP version anywhere else, but it was only $5 so I ordered it.
Just got it and as expected, it's the DOS version (the only version).
Kinda neat to get a DOS game brand new in the original packaging.

I downloaded DosBox and De-Fend Reloaded(front-end), but haven't messed with them yet.

Am I on the right path?
Anyone have a sample batch file to launch a game?

EDIT: It's kinda funny that I'm excited about a DOS racing game from 1995.  While just a week ago, I found a copy of Split Second(2010) at a discount store for the same price($5).  I'm not worried about installing the new game anytime soon, but I'm anxious to get the old DOS game working on my cab.   :lol

Yeah, I don't have the exact syntax with me, but dos box can run a stand-alone game via the command line.  Basically you have to mount a virtual hdd, mount the game and launch it which can all be done via batch file.

Ironically the easiest way to figure out how to do this is to dl a pirated dos game that comes with dos box (search for torrents via google).  It'll include a batch file that shows you all the commands.
