Title: "Cmos invalid using cmos coinage errors detected" on Mortal Kombat games?
Post by: loganm187 on October 06, 2012, 04:46:46 am
I am trying to finalize my MAME set up and front end(Gameex) and when testing games EVERY SINGLE Mortal Kombat game(1-u3) gives me this warning message once booted:

"Cmos invalid using cmos coinage errors detected"

Then it says "Press any button to continue." When I proceed all the graphics and text are super glitchy and then MAME crashes a few seconds later. I hit tab and went to dipswitch and switched "CMOS Coinage" to the other option, but it didn't help. I can't find a single person online talking about this for MAME. But lots of threads about this happening with actual Mortal Kombat PCB boards people purchased. Any Info guys? What good is a mame box when i can't play MK2!!

Use a newer version of mame? For all my midway games running on the System MK uses I go into the setup and configure the sound levels and other settings then when that saves, I stop getting the CMOS error

I'm using the newest version of MAME Version  0.147 and all my ROMS are updated to that version. I have gotten ahold of a complete updated ROM/CHD set for the newest version of MAME. What exactly do you change? sound levels? That's awfully random. I will give it a shot.

Do you have the NVRAM folder created?

I just checked. Yes, I do have an NVRAM folder and it's full of files from MK and such..hmmmm. maybe mame is not reading this directory?

Well, start by deleting the Mortal Kombat files and then play the game again.  Get into the settings, put it on freeplay, and see if everything sticks.

Alright. Deleted NVRAM files and changed to freeplay. Same thing. CMOS error and  all the text is glitched out like crazy and it crashes within 20 seconds. :(

Try with 146? That's what I use. Try a new rom dump?

Tried a different version of MAME both 32 and 64. Also tried it on a different more powerful system and with older mortal kombat 1-3 roms set. Same thing. And it's only with these games. No others. there is something up with these mortal kombat roms guys...

pbj is on the right track... that message appears when you start those games for the first time ever.  MAME should create a nvram file after that and everything should work fine.  If it isn't then something is screwed up to where mame can't write the file.  Make sure your folders aren't read only and if you are in win7/vista turn off uac to make sure it isn't a permissions issue.

Also ditch gameex for a second.... whenever you have a problem with an emulator the very first thing you should do is try launching the emulator outside of the frontend, to determine if the issue is with the FE  (launching the game with the wrong options or just plain screwing something up) or the emulator itself.

When messing with a game like this I don't use the front end. That would take forever. Mame is creating a NVRAM file after I TRY and play the game. I can delete it from the NVRAM folder than boot the game and check the folder and there it is created again and the system has full read/write access to the folder. It just does the same thing on all the MK games except 4.

I'm guessing your rom dumps are bad. Since you are getting graphic errors. I've never had issues like that before with any MK game. Can you try them on another PC a see if you still have the issue? Try a fresh install if MAME if you haven't yet (as in extract to different folder)

I had this problem last week with MK1, MK2 and NBA Jam..I simply changed from .147 to .146 and it worked fine.  Try 146 or 145

0.147 had issues with many Midway games which were rectified within hours of discovering which was due to refactoring of code.  MAME 0.147u1 (released today) has all this fixed.  Basically, any version "but" 0.147 should work ok.

Why are the Mortal Kombat games so consistently hard to emulate?

looks like I will upgrade to 147.01 then. Good to know i wasn't doing something stupid and there was something up with all these midway games. I am using mamui64 147 would that upgrade be up to .1 yet as well?
