I remembered this movie being a little cheesy, but I think that's because I saw it on TV, pre-cable. I just watched the original, un-adulturated version. Much better. It's still a little goofy, but a decent flick in general. Heavy hitters Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen head it off. If nothing else, and this is actually why I'm posting, the aerial footage is so worth watching. The cinematography and film are such a rich quality that I got all thrilled, especially in the Tomcat/Zero scene. (Slight spoiler: though the hit wasn't realistic, the Tomcat's gun fire was the real 'BRRRRRRRRRP' - I guess loaded with special blanks - unlike later movies like Top Gun and such.) On Netflix right now.

cool...I will watch this today. I'm always up for a good flight fight.

Final countdown is a great movie. Very interesting idea and concept. True story, during the filming they almost lost one of the Tomcats. The footage is in the movie, the Tomcat roles and the pilot momentarily loses control and the plane barely avoids going into the Pacific Ocean. It's been a while since I saw it but I think it is when the Tomcats first engage the Zeros. There is a very loud engine sound which is real when the pilot full throttles the plane to avoid dumping it. So keep an eye out for the scene when you watch.

I remember the ads for this one when I was a kid, but I didn't get to see it. Thanks for the reminder! I'll check it out.

Loved that movie as a kid. Had a buddy who served on the Nimitz though not during the filming.
