correct.  I saw this post right after seeing T3 so naturally I had world dominating super computers on the brain.  Given the level of intelligence in government, calling them retarded is an insult to retarded people everywhere. I take it as inevitable that the human race will be destroyed by super intelligent mame machines that have been unnecessarily upgraded to conciousness--how's that for an "everything else" post :P ;D

The funny thing is that in about 1 or 2 years that computer will be considered slow.

Those monitors are killer btw.

SNAAAKE, I think the answer is YES!

I like the on-chip OS...  I've been wondering why they haven't done this all along.  My PDA can start-up instantly, in exactly the same state that I left it (even in the middle of a MAME game!)  Why can't my desktop PC do the same?

Bet this thing is REALLY expensive...with or without monitor...  :o

you can buy solid state hard drives currently...but they are about $1,000 per gig. I talked with a sales rep about buying one. Basically, you can get a 1 or 2 gig drive to put your OS on, and it will boot in about 2-3 seconds...however...it'll still takes 10-20 for the bios and system checks to go through...

The government uses these a lot in planes and whatnot...they are super durable (unlike a regular hard drive) and can be erased with one command or button push (security for sensitive data after a crash).

It's interesting, that's for sure.  Their basis for the "no computer compares to it" remark is that everything in it is overclocked.  That also reduces the life and the reliability of the components, though.  The overclocking can be done at home, fairly easily with the right cooling, nVidia even includes overclocking settings in their standard video drivers.  And, the "supercomputer" term comes from the fact that any computer past something like 700 MHz or something slow like that is considered by US law to be a "supercomputer" and because of that has export restrictions.  I dunno, that was a couple years ago when I got my old Athlon 850 and thought it was funny that I was technically buying a "supercomputer" and was forbidden from taking it on a plane to Russia or something.  (even though it was probably manufactured close to China)

There's also no multiprocessing going on, just an overclocked P4.  They use a pretty standard gaming graphics board too, not a professional graphics board like a FireGL or a Quadro-FX, or something truly powerful like whatever came off of the old Oxygen line that had symmertric multiprocessing graphics chips on it.

Anyway, not to be a major bubble-burster or anything...  they still have some nifty stuff in there, just not much of anything that makes it more powerful, or worth the price they're asking.

Except the monitor.  I would give my left nut for one of those.

And it would cost you your left nut + change for one of these:

A bargain at $17,500.

Don't worry just yet.  I remember reading part of a non-fiction book on artificial intelligence that said in order to make the kind of complex neural-network, fuzzy logic decisions that the human brain does, it would take a machine running at 40 teraflops.  That would still be beyond anything in existance at the moment, but I can see how it might be available maybe 20 years from now.  We're beginning to hit the wall with what silicon can do, which is probably why the're starting to do more with multiprocessors now.  So until we switch to gallium arsenide or some other next generation superconductive material, skynet will have to wait...

Hopefully humans will get their ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- together before we either get nuked by Cyberdyne, or turned into Duracells by the Matrix...  Judgement Day is inevitable.  Everything that has a beginning has an end...

That's so sad--i can do all the fuzzy logic I want but i'll bet good money I'm down in the 8086 range when it comes to memory retrieval and female expression comprehension :-\ (Just ask the fiance)

One thing to keep in mind, is that these super intelligent machines will need to have the want to destroy humans.  Someone will have to program that.  They're not going to just decide on day that "Hey, let's kill all humans.  I have some free cycles, why not?".

I, personally, don't see anything like that EVER happening, but I still enjoy my Terminator and Matrix movies, and Dune books all the same.
