Title: The comebacks
Post by: Donkbaca on April 11, 2012, 01:25:10 pm
I was thinking, there are so many games that I loved when i was a kid that are no longer around, worse, the genre isn't even being produced.  Most of these genre's are also, sadly escaping.  If I was king of the world, here is how I would make them comeback:

Space Ship Flight Sim:  Wing Commander - this series was awesome, and now there is nothing like that out there that I can think of.  I would port these to Xbox live, or make a new one.  The new consoles have analog controls and more than enough buttons to swtich shields and weapons.  That would be awesome.  A new Rogue Squadron would be cool too, that was just about the only reason to own a gamecube.  Heck I might throw mine in my Wii just to revisit it this weekend.

Point and click adventure:  I keep thinking these old point and click adventure games would be PERFECT for the iOS, android platforms.  I had hope that more of these would come back after Myst was released, but, sadly they have yet to come back.  I would LOVE a Sam and Max on the iPad, and Kings Quest would be great

I miss WC, but recently discovered the latest installment (fan-made freebie) - http://wcsaga.com/ (http://wcsaga.com/)

I also miss dungeon crawlers and Legend of Grimrock (http://www.grimrock.net/) comes out today.

Nope.

Think Wizardy or Eye of the Beholder.

An astonishing number of iOS and Android game developers are clueless when it comes to these platforms. There are entire libraries and genres that are being overlooked and/or ported so poorly they're not even worth playing.

I've never played Eye of the Beholder, but Wizardry is a dungeon crawler.  What are you saying?

That both Wizardy and EotB are dungeon crawlers and Diablo 3 isn't.  :dizzy:

Ahhh yes I get it!  I read your comment wrong  :-[

Maniac Mansion would be fun too

This looks fun!  Made me think of 'Cranston Manor' on the Apple II.  And reminded me that I never finished that game...

Maniac Mansion is Legendary Awesome. I would love to see a sequel that does it real justice.

There is a cool 2d overhead that is similiar to Privateer, Escape Velocity Nova. You become a pirate, trader, join a military faction, become a mercenary, whatever you want to make a living. You buy or steal ships, upgrade them and outfit them with weapons and gadgets, start a fleet, take over planets. very open ended. Just don't expect any great cutscenes or actors or even any talking. The game only focuses on space action, the story is all carried in text only.

ev nova ACTION! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ecnp38dqJ4E#)

I would personally love to see new RTS games that are not based on creating piles units from resources like warcraft. I mean like games like Syndicate. The Gangsters games were pretty cool as well.

Played some Grimrock last night ... pretty damned nice. Best $12 I have spent this year.

Think I'll try that this weekend with the kids.  You're right for $12 it's a great value!  Are you mapping it with graph paper?!

They actually include a PDF of custom graph paper, although the game does have an automapper (which you can disable in "old school" mode).

I miss a good flight simulator indeed.  I'd love a new descent or Tie Fighter game.

I would keep an eye on Kickstarter if I were you.  With the reassurance of Wasteland/Shadorun I can guarantee you there will be lots of old gems coming back.  I'll post them to here when I find them too as sometimes it's tough to spot a diamond in the rough on Kickstarter.

I just discovered that telltale games released Sam and Max on the iOS platform, and Monkey Island too.

I think any game that relies on a point and click interface is a no-brainer for the ios, Kings Quest, the old Might and Magic's.
