After three weeks, the VertiCade is finished.

Most of the arcade games I play, are vertical games. Mr. Do!, Donkey Kong and Galaga are are some of my favourite games. They are all with vertical screen orientation and they all need only on set of controls with just one button. So naturally I wan't to make a cabinet just perfect for this type of old school arcade games.
Check out the whole project here:

I will also update this thread with picture and progress too :)
My goal was to make a compact cabinet with a vertical mounted 17" LCD monitor. This way you could also use the design for a regular mounted 19" monitor by making the cabinet a few inches wider. This way more people will hopefully benefit from the design files I will make available soon :) The cabinet basically started out like the sketch on the left and ended up looking like the one to the right. I made about 15 sketches in between ending up with the result on the right due to size limitations and restrictions internally.
Here is a simple 3D model of the cabinet. I think it is a little bit more modern, sleek and streamlined than the WeeCade design. I can only hope it will be as popular.
I don't think I could have made a more compact design to fit a vertical 17" or a horizontal 19". Most of my design are based around the idea of making the most compact cabinet possible. Less is more - in my opinion.
IMO this design has some advantages because of the low height of the control panel. I always found that the WeeCade was too high to use comfortably at a normal table.
The control panels is made of two layers of 5 mm acrylics, but you could also use 12 mm MDF.
My design only has four pushbuttons, but the is easily room for six buttons there. But I don't think there is any need of more than four buttons for me.
Opposed to my other control panels, this has holes for bolts. I don't have access to making the special brackets and metal control panels I have used earlier on, but with four button head Allen bolts, this should look fantastic too. The top layer has larger holes for the bolt heads, so they are recessed in the layer and will be flush with the surface.

The solution I'm using here is Evonik Acrifix 116. In the US there are similar products from Weld-on and TENSOL in the UK.

Great to hear you are working on a new project! Your Project MAME was one of my inspirations for starting my own project :)
I really like the shape. What are the general dimensions?
-
Nice new design. Some measurements would help in it's construction by others. :applaud:

I have updated the first picture with some simple dimensions. There will be work drawings later (a week or so) like my other projects.
-
Great start I can see lots of these popping up in future. :applaud:
-
My last build was a modded weecade. Can't thank you enough for the original build thread, really helped me out a lot. One of the mods was fitting a 17" monitor that you could manually rotate to vert. I had to lose the speakers under the marquee to fit it but I think it came out pretty well.
I can't wait to see what you do with this newest design of yours. Keep it up man.
-
Thank you, I hope it turns out OK :)
-
Thanks for posting this, your builds are always hugely inspiring.
-
I'm looking for a nice easy weecade project to fill my days when we get some sunshine.
This is looking very promising. :applaud:
I noticed that you haven't cut slots for T molding, has T molding gone out of style in small projects?

Thank you... I don't have any experience with t-molding nor the tool to cut the slots for that. But I would like to make one with T molding next time.

I think you are going to run into some problems here..... the marquee lip overhangs the monitor wen looked at perpindicular to the screen. to see all of the screen you have to look at the screen at an angle... look like about 30deg angle there. Any off angle is going to be problematic for LCD screens since 17" IPS panels are hard to find. Now it's not going to be too bad since you are mounting the monitor vertical, but if someone was to mount a 19" horizontal like you suggest then they would be looking at it from a below the screen which is really bad. Also your stick man looks too low... it looks like his hands would have to be up high just below his shoulders. Not comfortable if your fore arms are above horizontal.
Other than that... Nice design... Kinda reminds me of the ones this guy on ebay is putting out: Bartop Arcade - Final Design (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCqQm-WdkYk#)

Noted - but...
Ergonomically this cabinet is close to as good as it possible can IMO, when playing in on a dining table.
The picture you are referring to illustrates the lowest ange to view the cab from (like a child) - this is just one of the situations I have worked out. There is several other situations to illustrate a person of avarage height (myself) and one to show the highest angle before the marquee is a problem. When you are avarage height your arm will have en angle close to 90 degree and your angle to the monitor will be closer to 90 degree.
Believe me, I use a lot of time thinking out these issues. Let's just see how it play when finished - maybe you're right ;)
I hope it will not look too much like the cab from the YouTube video - I don't like that too much.
-
Great design looking forward to this one..
It was your site I stumbled across one day that led me to start my own project. I don't even know what I was looking for at the time, but your website popped up and I'm now nearly finished my first cab...maybe a juke next, then maybe this verticle.l!!!!
Cheers

I appreciate you saying that, because that is the whole idea with my homepage. It's the beginners place to start a new hobby, and eventually this also means more users here at BYOAC. Everybody wins :)

Great :) I would be honored. Let me send you some pictures of the finished cab then...atm all I need to do is fix the marquee.
-
Looking good! :) Can't wait for further updates!

Progressing really nicely. :applaud: :applaud: Is there any way to install pinball buttons on the sides of the cabinet? Looks like supports would block the installation of the buttons.

You could just drill straight through the support. But I am not going for Pinball buttons this time around though.

Huge update to the thread and now it's more or less done!

NO!!!!! It looks sleek and unique as is, no t-molding please...... :soapbox:
-
It's beautiful! :applaud:

Looks really great loke!
Are you going to put side art on it? It would look really nice if you had a circular logo on the sides, something that matches the marquee.
Either way, it looks really great and cleanly built. :applaud:
-
The location of the marque is going to be a major hindrance. Looks nice but doesn't look like it would be comfortable to play.
I am very sorry to say that it is comfortable for play - sorry about that. I don't actually know what the major hindrance of the marquee is. Nothing I have noticed.

Thanks.
I am working on some side art, but I am undecided about it atm. I guess I need more time to come up with something good.
-
Great work as always, truly inspiring
-
Looks like a very similar shape of my current build. I love it man. I wanted mine to be a vertical screen at first but I couldn't find a screen to mount in there that wouldn't be obscured by the marquee overhang. Looks like you overcame that problem. Great job! :applaud:
-
Very insipiring build! I really love the way you eliminated the T-Moulding! Sweeeeeeet! What a sweet looking bartop!
-
looking great as always where do you get your panel mount usb and power connectors I've been trying to find them online but haven't found those exact ones yet

Thank you - but I have nothing against T-moulding at all. I think up right cabinets looks better with T-moulding, but IMO they are much too dominating on smaller bartops.

The first I purchased was too blue tinted. So I bought this one instead. They are great and has a white colour. You need about 4 of these to get a good strong light.

Check the specs here:

I use a SSD. You can get a 60 or 64 GB for about $100 or so.

Updated pictures look great. The VertiCade is a winner. Hope there will be many clones of this build. :applaud: :applaud:

The button layout seems a little awkward. A neo-geo setup I think would better. cool build though

I have done that before - so I needed to do something new. Works fine though and also with a spinner:

Hi there, I am just about starting a Weecade build, so yet another notch in your belt :P
Logitech Z110 speakers. Other than that, they sound awesome!
I was wondering if you had no problem with these having no physical volume? Perhaps the Z120 (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/speakers-audio/home-pc-speakers/devices/stereo-speakers-z120) would be a good alternative if they can be easily taken apart or even the LS11 (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/speakers-audio/home-pc-speakers/devices/LS11-speakers) for the headphone jacks? (again if they are easy to take apart / hack).
-
looking great as always where do you get your panel mount usb and power connectors I've been trying to find them online but haven't found those exact ones yet
I would like to know this as well. I had to hack apart an old PSU and an extension cord to make my panel mount power connector.

Gorgeous work! Really inspiring. :notworthy:

They sell them at www.arcadeshop.de (http://www.arcadeshop.de):
power: www.arcadeshop.de/Power-Supply-Plug-with-filter_386.html (http://www.arcadeshop.de/Power-Supply-Plug-with-filter_386.html)

I have also seen multiple webshops that sell computer parts also sell these usb and similar ethernet connectors.

Love this design. And apologies for bringing this topic back from the dead but could some one point me in the right direction. I'm looking for the LED light strips used in this cab. Can someone tell me where I would could buy them online???

Beautiful build, as usual.
