Title: Golden Tee PC Version
Post by: gndprx on September 15, 2003, 10:56:50 am
Does the PC version of GTG play the same as the arcade version with a trackball?

I can't stand the graphics and sound GTG II which is the latest emulated version, but I absolutely love GTG in general.

I just don't want to pick up the PC version if it doesn't play the same on a cabinet.

The basic gameplay is the same, but there are a few minor differences.

The trackball moves are the same for swinging the club.  But instead of rolling the trackball left or right to switch clubs, you click a pair of onscreen buttons up or down to switch clubs.  Also, you click the right mouse button for backspin and left mouse button for no backspin.

Another difference is that when you putt in the arcade you can hit the ball as hard as you want, and you'll still go in the hole if you hit it straight.  But on the PC version, if you putt too hard, the ball will roll over the hole like it would in real life.

So those items considered, it sounds like a suitable comprimise for getting a more current version of GTG on the cabinet.

As long as the actualy control and game play when hitting the ball are the same (the putting thing you mentioned is probably a good thing) then I'm happy.

Thx!

Yes, but a word of caution... you cannot define any keys. You can't even utilize your control panel because of this.  Everything is done with the mouse/trackball and mouse/trackball buttons. Pain in the butt if you ask me.  But it is certainly more fun than the Mame version. And much faster too.

RacerX hit the differences, a few other things to keep in mind are that the pc version requires the CD in the drive so you'll have to find the no-cd crack avail on the web, use a virtual drive manager or keep the cd in the drive.  I also find the graphics in the pc version much better than those emulated in mame.  One other interesting thing i found was with screen resolution.  I have a 640x480 max resolution and the game starts out in 800x600.  You can change this ingame by using the F4 key and then go into options to change it permanently.  Problem was that it would not save my changed settings until I completely played thru a full game (small price to pay!)

I just got my imperial trackball wired and I had to give golden tee a try.  Its awsome.  Pretty much like the bar golden tee.

Here's one other thing to note: If you do anything that requires you to enter your initials, it will force you to use the keyboard!

Golden Tee PC with a real Golden Tee trackball is awesome, though...

As far as remapping the controls, i had thought about using a batch file to remap the ipac / keywhiz on the fly.

My other thought would be to set up a macr or something for the most common names of my friends that would play. Then all you'd have to do is press one button.

Just thinking out loud... ;)

i wouldn't worry to much about remapping the action keys:
arrow keys lft/rt = club selection, which is a default joystick in mame
backspin/forward spin = mouse keys, if you have a trackball you should have these
esc = reswing and bring up options, most already have esc since it's used in mame to get out of a game. options can be navigated with tb.

the only bother is names. it's not a huge deal, but if you must have your name in there, just have your kb handy or do as i did(w/ keywiz), map you ingame nick to some shifted keys. otherwise i'd just hit some random buttons to get past the name screen. even with my named mapped i still find myself just slamming a couple keys to get past that annoyance.
