The father of C programming has passed away at the age of 70.
The person who brought so much to computing is gone.
And the saddest fact is that those who benefit today from his achievements, will not realize it.
RIP dmr :'(

This.....media goes ape ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- that Jobs dies after selling "shiney" projects. Yet the guy who made alot of today's computing possible gets a blip on the radar.

EXACTLY!!!! Ugh. That just goes to show you how stupid people actually are. ::)

+1 on everything above. Wow, he died almost a week ago and I haven't heard anything until now. Inventing the most important computer programming language of all time is kinda a big deal last time I checked. ::)

"shiny" products that basically run on unix and were likely originally written in C or C++.

Heh, true that Chad. I was bummed to hear about Ritchie too :(

What the deuce? Not one of my usual news feeds gave me a heads up.

You guys should go put flowers and have a candlelit vigil outside of the C stores.
Seriously, this is sad news, but what did you guys expect? Have you turned on the TV lately?

No, cuz the media has disgusted me for years. ;D

Didn't see a thing on TV when Blaise Pascal died, either. Priorities are all wrong, I tell you. :P

I guess now I know how old you are. ;D

Me like shiny things!
As long as they don't say "Apple" on them.

Damn. I was completely unmoved by Steve Jobs death but this has hit me quite hard.
Dennis Ritchie is one of my heroes. I love C. Sure it's got a few quirks and it's showing its age in certain areas, but it's still my favourite programming language. And "The C Programming Language" is still the yardstick by which books on computer programming are judged. No other computing book I've read matches it for conciseness and clarity.
I also agree with the previous comments. Dennis Ritchie's death has been largely unreported here in the UK yet we've had wall to wall coverage about Steve Jobs. It's deeply depressing that a guy who was basically a salesman, who copied other people's ideas, and who treated his customers with contempt, gets showered with plaudits. Yet a modest unassuming guy who truly revolutionised computer science is largely ignored.

I know, its sad isnt it? :-[

Damn... Hackaday finally reports his death (http://hackaday.com/2011/10/17/on-the-life-of-dennis-ritchie/). I have a lot of respect for HaD as an aggregator, but damn, at least break the mold once in a while and report original news.
