Title: Amplifier to use for My Cabinet
Post by: Mister Hat on October 08, 2011, 07:56:32 pm
For the last cabinet I made, I just gutted some old PC speakers and used the PCB with some car stereo speakers. I'm thinking I found a better alternative while still staying cheap. Instead of just using old PC speakers, I thought I'd just buy one of these (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-Hi-Fi-Audio-Stereo-Amplifier-Car-Motorcycle-DC-12V-/250893732747?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D4%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D3341505485094715031) and wiring the power straight to my PC PSU. What are your thoughts?

Try to find a Sonic Impact T-amp. They are still made, but today another brand takes care of these.

I have one of those small motorbike amps.  Its OK for a Mame Machine but the sound was a bit muddy for the jukebox I built. Ultimately I am now using it to power a small woofer on my bedroom hi-fi.  When testing I Used a pair of Wharfedale Modus Cubes.

Now if you can find one of these and get a half decent pair of speakers and your off and rocking.

I'm guessing this will still be better than a 6v PC speaker PCB though, right?

I'mm currently using a gutted amplifier that i mounted in my cabinet, it's a 2 channel chinease amp, seems to be okay for now, but i think your best bet for nice sound will be a car amp.

Run it from a different power source if you can because it would have interfearance from your pc power supply.

It will definitely be better then some 5 or 6v cheapo PC speakers yes.  Just make sure that the speakers you are using are 8Ohm @ you have a ground isolation loop and it will be OK, don't expect too much bass  :o :o

How so?

How So,  Because the other electrical devices connected to the psu will most likely cause it :)  I found the same when I tested Mine.  From PSU I got Hum, from separate Power supply No Hum.  A Ground loop should help though.

I took an extra atx power supply from pc, took the green wire, and the opposite black wire, (plug that plugs into your motherboard) and joined them, so the atx power supply has power without atx board.

connect the yellow wire from the power supply (12v) to the amps 12v+ and the ground to a good ground source. it can even be a peace of metal inside the cabinet, but be carefull where you mount it though.

Power the hole lot up if your comfortable with your connections.

Oh yes, one more very important thing, don't just buy any amp that you see, you must know the wattage of the computer power supply that you are going to use, example, if it's a 350 watt power supply go for any amp smaller than 300 watt because you might risk popping the amp, and if it's not going to pop the power supply it is surely going to over kill it draining it of power with every beet.

When powering on the hole lot make sure that the gane etc on the car amp is set to minimal. while the music is plaing set the gain of the amp up with a star screw driver until sound is max or to where you like it. You might hear a crackling sound, if so, set the amp gain down, becuase it is a sign of the amp pulling to much power from the power supply, but if you go for a smaller amp than what the power supply is, i don't think that will happen.

For the speakers.
I would recommend using 4 ohm mids, example if the amp is 300 watt, go for 100-150 watt mids, and if you are using a crt monitor you might want to look out for shielded speakers, because unshielded speakers might interfear with the crt monitor.

What you could also do is to connect two 8 ohm speakers in parallel, if i remember correct, then they should act as only 4 ohm, and if you want to use shielded 8 ohm speakers, go for old satelite surround system speakers, as they are shielded. (Magnetic field won't interfear with monitor).

Well, that was a mouth full, but i hope the information helps you or someone else.

Regards
Quintin

what about this guy?

I'm looking to pick up either that or the Sure amp listed above to fire up these bad boys:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10844&cs_id=1084404&p_id=6913&seq=1&format=3#specification (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10844&cs_id=1084404&p_id=6913&seq=1&format=3#specification)

FYI, the speakers shown above are 4 ohm and both amps claim that they can handle them.

I wonder if this might even be better:

Those guys ship the one I mean. It is this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PNOH2I/ (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PNOH2I/)

Problem with your suggestion is that you still have to puzzle out the power supply side.
This item is a complete working solution.
And it is a legendary T-amp. Which means D-amps done right!

And of course NOW I see this thread  :(

Oh well, I picked up a Pyle Pro PCA3 amp off ebay for about 30$. Seems to work fine, but the sound is a little muddy though that could easily be the kenwood speakers Ive got hooked to it.

We'll see how it all sounds actually in the juke I'm building.

But that Dayton looks like a nicer alternative.
