Title: TV or CRT Monitor?
Post by: Mister Hat on October 02, 2011, 04:22:56 am
I was looking around a lot and I can't seem to come up with a good answer. I've heard that it's better to get the CRT monitors because they're easier to hook up and have better resolutions, but then that TVs are better because of the lower resolution and lower prices.

My motherboard has a S-VIDEO and Composite out so I could easily hook a TV up to it but I'm wondering how easy it is to mount them properly?

I'd really like some input.

What kind of cabinet is this going in?  You could always just build a monitor 'shelf' and set it on top of that and anchor it down somehow.  I think the choice of monitor/TV depends on your particular preference for screen size vs quality.  TVs are usually bigger (24" is a great size IMO) while monitors typically max out around 21" (20" viewable).  You will get a bit of fuzziness with TV out vs a monitor also -- whether that's better or worse is personal preference.  There are also CRT presentation 'monitors' out there on craigslist from time to time which give you the best of both worlds (large screen size + RGB inputs and 640x480 or 800x600 video).  I picked up one for $25!

Seems like a large CRT monitor would be the best choice. If I find a 24" CRT monitor I'd be happy. I'd rather have it look the best :D.

"Best" is subjective.  The sharpest picture is going to be a high resolution LCD monitor.  Classic arcade games have a a much lower resolution and a fuzziness. I have had monitors and TVs and have settled on nice flat glass CRT tvs with component input since they have a sharp picture that is still "warm"

My mobo doesn't have any component out and I don't really want to buy another card. The best I could do with a TV is S-Video which is still pretty bad compared to straight RGB. A computer monitor can still use low resolutions, and VGA is very sharp so it seems like a good option for my cabinet.
