Title: Coopers Arcade Pedestal
Post by: stuzza on August 31, 2011, 08:00:32 pm
After about 7 years out of the hobby I was drawn back early in the year and had that itch to build another cab.  A friend of mine is obsessed with our local "Coopers" Beer so I decided to surprise him with his own custom Coopers Pedestal Cab that will go in his newly renovated Bar room.  This thing will be connected to a projector for some large screen mame goodness.
I decided to go with the Arcadeworx Pedestal flat pack this time round as it was always the woodworking and painting that killed me my last builds a few years ago. The white gloss laminate finish and computer cut panels are so much more accurate and professional than my shaky sawing skills.  ;D
A big thanks to my mate Ryan for whipping up the Control Panel graphics for me.  It helps having a graphic designer for a friend!
The Computer is an old P4 3.2Ghz with 2GB RAM and an 80GB HDD.  It's currently running Mamewah with Mame 0141u2 as well as NES,SNES,GB,GBC,GBA,SMS,GENESIS,32X & Atari2600.  Which with all the preview vids was all I could squeeze onto the 80GB Drive.

Things I learnt this time round:

This cab does not have much room to fit a computer and Sub etc inside.  Using a microATX board would have been easier, but unfortunately all the machines I had available are full ATX.

While LED joysticks look great, they have been a bit of a disapointment.  The two sticks I got from paradisearcadeshop kept sticking when moved due to a metal washer inside slipping from its groove.   I had to pull both sticks apart to check the problem and in doing so broke the LED cable on one of the joysticks.  After getting the LED cable resouldered it got stuck going back up the shaft and is now wedged half way up the stick meaning the light is not as bright.  I'm going to leave it there because I know that if I try and pull it out it may break again.

Top notch.  what's going on with that coopers logo on the front - looks like it was routed with a sign carving V groove bit, but then has some through holes as well?  I smell CNC routing going on!!!!

I like Yuengling , , ,  whaddaya say old buddy!

Yeah Arcadeworx are able to CNC any cut out you like so I managed to get the Coopers logo cut out the front and the back of the unit.  Had to Screw some metal mesh onto the back of each piece though and glue the middle of the letters "C" "o" etc.. as they need something to hold in place.  I added two green LED light strips and a green LED fan inside the machine to get the glow effect.
