Not sure if I used the right word or not, ambient... ambiance? Anyway...
Arcade memories I have are of sights and sounds. Right now my cabinet has the sights, but no sounds. When I play the games they make all the good noises and such, but if I just leave a game running, it's silent. Is this right? Are most games quiet in High Score/etc. mode? Are some games noisy and I just haven't found them yet?
I want a game with some noises in the background of my gameroom. Options?

Are you talking about while the actual game is running or while the frontend is running? If it's while the actual game is running usually it's a setting or a dipswitch that needs to be turned on. It's usually labelled 'Demo Sound' I think. Some games, even with the correct setting/switch turned on, do not have sound during the high score list. Just while the demo gameplay is happening. If it's the frontend the link above is what I have for my ambiance sounds.

Most (if not all) games in MAME have by default the demo music and sounds on (as these were the default settings of the romsets), so if you aren't hearing them, it's like AI said above.
