Title: Lightgun in Game calibration ... I'm confused
Post by: kronic24601 on March 31, 2011, 01:10:21 pm
Hi Guys, thanks to the lovely AimTrack I have two great guns on my cab. Next step is to get working games. I know MAME has some on-again off-again games but I just wanted to test around with things and I'm curious as to anyone else feedback.

To preface the items below, the AimTrack works fine, I'm talking about in-game calibration, done usually by pressing F2 and loading the actual game calibration item.

1) Jurassic Park (http://maws.mameworld.info/maws/romset/jpark)
The game is marked as "imperfect" but it doesn't really specify what is wrong with it.

The game works fine so far as I can tell, it's just all over the place with the Gun aiming (a slight movement causes a large jump of cursor on the screen)

Problem is when I press F2 and go to the Calibration menu, there is no way that I can see to actually calibrate the guns. I saw something that tracked it's X & Y location, but no setting to change anything ... Has anyone figured this out? Or does no one play this game...?

2) Zombie Raid (http://maws.mameworld.info/maws/romset/zombraid)

The game is marked as fully functional, but when I tried to follow the in-game instructions (seen below) to calibrate the guns ... it still didn't really calibrate all that well. Has anyone gotten this game to work well?

Quote
To calibrate the guns use F2 (Service Mode) and then reset F3 or restart MAME. Use CTRL or ALT and highlight "7. Gun Adjust Mode". Hit 1 (P1 Start) two times to begin gun adjustments. Just follow the directions, aiming at the targets for both guns. When done, use F2 to shut off Service Mode and reset F3 or restart MAME.

Jurassic Park uses an analog stick instead of a gun which is likely the cause of the problem and why you can't calibrate.  I got it working pretty well with Aimtrak though it doesn't feel as good as the real gun games.  In the Aimtrak utility, set it to emulate a Joystick instead of a mouse.  Set your inputs in mame to joystick as well.  Also, put the joystick deadzone to 0 and the joystick saturation all the way up (1.00).  Finally, in the analog settings in mame, drop the sensitivity down.  It works pretty well for me with these settings, though the crosshairs still move a bit too fast.  Still, I actually like the way this feels better than using an actual analog stick.

I remember Zombie Raid was a pain to set up but I did get it to work. I'll fool around with it and see if it's calibrated correctly.

Last time I tried Zombie Raid it worked fine after calibration.  IIRC, you do need to use save states though because the calibration is lost at power up.

I have two AimTrak guns as well. (Arcade Guns).

DarthMarino has some good info.
I'm a bit hesitant to use the AimTrak Utility to set the lightguns to emulate a joystick rather than a mouse for fear that it will mess up other light gun games. Any thoughts there?

I did have some success on Jurassic Park by setting withing MAME Analog Controls (This game) Sensitivity to 1 and Digital Speed high (like 80). Plays decent. Still not super sharp but at least the reticule doesn't jump all over the place.
