Title: Do you ever feel like a dork for owning arcade games?
Post by: RayB on February 09, 2011, 04:15:50 pm
Just wondering if anyone else suffers the internal conflict of feeling too old for such things?

Nope. Video games are my passion and have been since I was 8 years old. I don't think I will ever feel too old for them.  :) Or to own them...

Not so much a Dork but maybe a bit of a Geek (as my better half likes to refer to me as), then again Geek could just be the UK equivalent.

Hey man, at least it's not online role playing games.  I've had friends sucked into that madness and they just get weirder every year.

+1 I know tons of people sucked into these...some lose their jobs, their wives/girlfriends over them. It encompasses their whole life...then when you FINALLY get them out of the house to go out somewhere...they sit there ---smurfing--- talking about the game. I DON"T UNDERSTAND YOUR WOW AND EQ LINGO!!! STOP TALKING TO ME ABOUT IT!!..

Hay Ray, if you feel that way, maybe I can haul some of that dorkiness away for you ... the youngest kid's bedroom could fit a cab or six ... he really likes Juno First!

Ray, you're 40. You should have passed the point in live that you actually let OTHERS decide over what YOU like....

I don't give a )^&%# what others think about my hobby. Most responses are actually very positive. Some are neutral, and a couple think I'm nuts having this hobby.  Who cares...

I actually LIKE that I have a hobby that few others have.... :)

I also coin collect, not as much as I used to since starting this adventure, but I do still from time-to-time.

i don't care though, wouldn't trade this hobby in for anything.  i mean whats a few hundred to play 1 game released 20 yrs ago  :lol

No not really. It just bothers me when they ask, "why?"

I usually counter it with why they do their particular hobby. If they're still clueless then it means they're too stupid to be in the house. I kick them out at that point.

Arcade games don't make me feel like a dork but the rest of my life does. I mean don't get me wrong I don't play role-playing games or anything I just take uber smart classes and stuff. Do I have friends in real life? Yes. Do I know what the sun is? Yes. Do I spend half the day thinking about girls? Yes. Do I own 50+ arcade games? Yes. Do I live in my mom's basement? No. I think that last one is really important.

I should have framed the question in two-parts. How many of you are married or shacking up?

I'm single now, so yeah I tend to care about what potential mates think. Face it, these things aren't popular with most of you with wives, so the last thing I want is for women to think I'm some sort of man-child nerd.

When you're first dating, it's really easy for women to come up with excuses why a guy won't do.

Know what I mean?

If she can't accept the man-child nerd, then she is really not wanted long term anyway. Just go to her place the first night. If there is a second night, introduce her to the real you. If she has an issue with it...game over!

I've found wife acceptance of an arcade machine sky-rockets the first time they find a game they actually enjoy.

Remember, a successful arcade game was one that made money, and to make money it has to simultaneously be challenging and fun.. that's pretty much the hallmark of something that's addicting.

Hearing your young child ask "Daddy, can we play Bubble Bobble?" helps too. (:

Not really,
- Whoever I tell that I'm in the process of building a stand-up machine is pretty interested, and several have told me if it goes well to build them one too.
- My son (10) is psyched and can't wait.
- My wife who was initially skeptical has been telling more people about what I'm doing than I have.  She plays a few games on the PC for now before going to bed, is impatient for me to build an actual control panel, is doubtful that I'll be able to create a realistic "Arcade experience" but much more on board.

Now, when I bring up my comic book collection to anyone, much different story...

Yup. Centi and Ms.Pac are almost always loved by the women.

Actually it was funny, because I was about to make a comment about how it surprised me that there really wasn't that much difference between men and women where it came to finding this hobby (I'm talking collecting/restoring/playing original classic arcade cabs here) cool or stupid.

There are lots of women who grew up with those games too...

Unless you're hunting for a younger chick Ray ? :) ;)

My wife is not really super supportive, but she doesn't mind it either. She does play an occasional game, mostly on the Judge Dredd pinball.

I've seen guys in this hobby with gf's/wives that range from being quite anti, to very enthusiastic about it (the lucky ---daisies--- !)

Not sure about you guys, but I know plenty of people who simply don't _have_ a hobby. They seem to work, watch TV and.......that's about it.....
I think those are the real DORKS....

My wife is pretty supportive of the hobby. She doesn't come down and play or anything but as long as we have the money she is down with me buying whatever I want. Besides, it keeps me out of her hair. heh

I could care less what others think about how I try to enjoy my life.  If they don't like it....too damn bad.  Had some people back in the day who were total football freaks (USA football) give me some crap.  I told them...."well, I don't understand the appeal of watching a bunch of large men bending over in tights wrestling over a ball".......he left me alone after that.

Yeah.  In college it was Quake and Quake II.  Half of the people in my major at UMass flunked out the semester Quake II was released.  I know a couple people who became dangerously addicted to WoW, too.

That being said, pin collecting DOES attract a lot of guys with more money than sense or guys that like to pretend they have a lot of money.   :-\

It also attracts a lot of only child men who have no idea what life is like when every moment of every day and every dollar goes towards some self indulgence.  I've seen some tantrums over pin stuff that made me want to reevaluate whether or not I wanted to continue with it has a hobby.

I have had a couple of parties at the house and snuck a couple of people into the office to show them my test mame machine.  My wife comes up to me and starts saying, "why are you imposing your dorkiness on these people?"  But people love that stuff.  I would go up to one of them and say, "hey, what was your favorite arcade game going up?'  nine times out of ten its galaga, people love that game.  Anyhow, I boot up my FE, pulll up galaga, and their jaws drop.  Then I say, come, on, that was too easy, give me something else. After a few minutes they are all giggling and amazed.

The single women were all impressed, they were like "as soon as you get this built we need to have a pacman tournament!"

Everyone has something dorky about them, the key is you don't advertise it.  I don't go up to people and say, hi, I collect old video games, what's your name?  Nothing to be ashamed of, but nothing to hide.

This is also reason #1 I quit disclosing how much I spent on anything.  "Next time you find a $50 pinball machine, give it to me!"  Yeah, how about no?

I get this too.

"so, that pin only cost you a couple hundred bucks?"
"yep"
"let me know, I'll buy a couple for that"
"it was filthy, dead, and a lot of work to find"
"I'll give you $50 for the trouble"
"I put 30 hours of work into it to make it reliable and clean"
"how about $75, then"

Or I get this:

"whoa, dude.  These things cost five grand apiece!  Did you win the lottery?"
"they cost five grand thirty years ago"
"five grand is five grand"
"they're like cars with 250,000 miles on them"
"still, five grand each.  You could have bought a boat!"

 :banghead:

How many of those 30 hours were spent cramming them into a shed and then piling crap on them so you can't play them anymore?

The only games I have with stuff piled on them are folded up.  I don't think I have ever had more than 8 pins at a time counting folded, playable, totally dead, etc.

Fiancee is right in the middle.  Play a few games (Q*bert & Ms Pac-man) occasionally, but is more a pinball girl, and that is only in the sense that she plays whatever is in front of her, once in a while.  I have a Space Explorer "home pinball" ( I know it's barely a pin) and she thinks it's great.  Me I want a Elivra Scared Stiff!  :lol

I get what youre saying, especially now a days. At least you dont live in California, the most pretentious place in the world. But you also dont have to tell her right away. Or if you do, dont build it up and say " I got something to tell you" or something weird like that. Just say that you restore old arcade games and they are bits of old memories that you like to relive time to time. Or say that your mother bought them for you right before she died. If a chick makes fun of you after that, she can go to hell for being a ---smurfette---.  ;D

I live in CA!

Its all about how you present it.  Present it as a hobby, not your life.  A "this is what I do in my spare time" sort of thing, rather than a, "this is what I schedule my life around" sort of thing.  Tell her you like the challenge and the ability to relive your youth, and that you let poor handicap kids play for free.  Its always good to make up stuff about how generous you are.

People dig retro and vintage stuff.  Just don't be a geek about it, and she will probably think its cool.

Before I was married I found it easiest to present it as a side job...as in, I repair old arcade games and pinball machines. I present it as if it is something that I make mad loot off of.

When I present it as a money making job the chicks never minded. They actually seemed sort of impressed. But of course I wasn't making any money from it, if anything it cost me a lot...but they didn't need to know that. LOL

If you try to suppress something you love this much, you will be profoundly unhappy. You cant 'trick' a woman into loving you. Any woman worth loving will accept that you are a man-child nerd (and most of us here are to some capacity), and all of the other shortcomings you have. :burgerking: I'm 41. My fiancee is 27 and a real hottie, and she accepts me joysticks and all. She doesn't get it when I spend 2 hours playing zookeeper, but I throw on Sonic Adventure, or super Mario World, and then she 'gets it'. From behind.  ;D

The girl I'm almost dating thought that I was obsessed for a little while because I spent one weekend at 2 different pinball places and I go to auctions and stuff. I then clarified that it is more of a thing to do like she reads books and I play pinball/arcade games. My life doesn't revolve around it but it is my thing I like to do. After that it was all good. You just have to let a girl realize that she comes before your games. Not a I'm going to sell them all off for you type of thing but that you won't make her walk home just so you can fit that free cabinet you saw on the side of the road on the way home. As long as your not an obsessed wierdo you should be good.

Oh man. A few Hundred bucks? I look at where I'm at with my build and wonder why i'd spend this kind of money to play old games

To be fair though, it also plays new games, stepmania, Frets on Fire, and VPinball, etc quite nicely so that helps.

That and I could never really get into console games, this seems like a good compromise  :)

I've found that if you're passionate about something, people have a respect for you. You can tip that either way by whether they're interested in what you're passionate about, and how much you give them on it.

Tonight I met my brother at a bar and grill. He's pretty out-going, and so of course he was already chatting it up with a couple guys who happened to be sitting close at the bar. I walk up wearing my Donkey Kong shirt, and the guy closest remarks about it and gives this little story about why he remembers Donkey Kong. It was a cute story, and I smiled and laughed. I wasn't asked about the shirt, and I didn't say a thing about video games.

I loved San Antonio the one time I went, except for the humidity (yikes!). I stayed in a small motel across from the Alamo, and just a walk away from that river with the bars and restaurants on either side. Is Dick's still open? That place was a blast. (I was there to attend AMOA !)

Being resentful, and saying everything is someone else's fault, is what makes a person emo.

---fudgesicle--- off Jim*, I was 22 and there on business. Didn't see any paper hats, just a hundred or so bras hanging off every available space (wtf?!) and a great ZZ Top cover band (I used to love ZZ Top). I'm sure you have some cynical comment to make about that.  :P

I thought the reason for the thread was that Ray was feeling old.

Friday I wore my Tron shirt. Everywhere I went people of various ages were captivated by and exclaimed about it, with an emphasis on the recent Legacy. I still haven't seen that.

In addition, the bar I was at that night had a speed hack Ms Pac. My brother was playing in between pool, and we traded off Pacs. A (arguably handsome and undorkly dressed) guy in his 20s came up and started talking appreciatively about Ms Pac-Man and the coolness of playing on the cabinet. I told him the game wasn't quite original, and he had to get his head around that a little, but I guess all hope isn't lost.

Actually, one of the first that day to come up to me and exclaim about my shirt was a thirty-year-old woman. At the bar, there were two women in a group of three (they were in their forties, and the third was one of theirs daughter) who loved my Tron shirt.

I got numbers from the first one, and one of the second set.

I get some flack from the other half regarding my collection.
I tend to get positive feedback on the collecting from most...........when they see & play the games.
Perhaps when I tell people I have some they might think, "stupid, games are for kids" or "why waste your money?"
But again when they see and play it brings back nostalgia for most.

Heh, yeah, I'll hear "you could have bought an awesome 65" plasma with that!"  Because I really want to pay $2500 for a TV that'll be dead in 3 years and worth nothing.

Not for owning them. Most people I know who are to mature to play video games still understand the value of collecting and the appreciate the skill involved in maintaining them.

It's the playing arcade games that makes me feel like a dork, but it's worth the embarrassment.

However, I'll mention that I've started dating a woman that can best be described as "awesome", and her reaction to seeing my "row" was "That's so cool!"

Well, I'm 40 years old, happily married, no kids and for the last 15 years my life has been one big midlife crisis, except for the chicks on the side  :laugh2:

I love old games (arcade, Amiga, C64) and I love to slot race with a couple of guys. We set up a nice place for the guys & me where we have a 90 foot 3 lane slot race track, a pool table, some slot machines, music & beers and now there's gonna be a cocktail Mame setup being built (oh, and a bartop is also under construction).

Oh and yes: I have the midlife crisis car as well: for 20 years I'm a big Corvette fan, so I have a yellow '04 convertible in the garage. That's kind of strange when you live in The Netherlands  ;)

But I love my life & I love these games!  :applaud:

As a Dutch Canadian here is a funny snippet concerning the rubbing of dutch men.  I lived in Holland until age 5 then went back to live with my Dad as a teenager aged 16/17...So in effect spent 1 year of high school there....I remember being in PE (Physical Education Class) and telling others I needed to take off my shoes. In my head I did a literal translation from English to Dutch and said "I have to take off my shoes first" or "Ik moet eerst mijn schoenen aftrekken"

Well in Dutch that translated to "I have to first masturbate my shoes"...there being a subtle linguistic difference between pulling off your shoes and taking them off. My classmates laughed for about 10 minutes and I have of course remembered it to this day... ;)

As for the main point of the thread...hell no...When I first dated my wife 19 years ago I hid my D&D gaming figures but after a few weeks when I was comfortable with her I put the geek patch on my sleeve and have worn it ever since...if she doesn't accept the hobby...she isn't a long term keeper period and its time to move on...to another woman...not another hobby! ;)

Nope, you can control speed & braking with the controller in your hands. Some tuned cars actually reach real speeds of up to 30mph and some drag race slot cars can go up to 60 or 70mph pulling up to 10 amps of power.  :woot

It takes some handy work to get the car around the track without crashing it.

+1 that's what the point of my post waaaay back a few pages was. Luckily my wife was down from day one and we talked about it before she ever came to my house so I didn't need to hide anything. So she was always a keeper. Unfortunately after we got married she all of a sudden lost interest in all of the things that attracted me to her in the first place including my hobbies. But she never ever bothers me about them and lets me do what I want so I can't complain too much. Only difference now is I just do my hobbies alone now or sometimes my son will hang with me.

Not sure what you mean, but let me explain in case it didn't make sense.  :)

When I met my wife...she was into watching Anime, Horror films, video games, computers, and reading comics. Those are the same things that I was into and I never met a girl who liked these things so I was very interested in dating her. After we got married, she thinks that Anime is too over the top adult and doesn't feel like reading subtitles, horror films give her bad dreams, she would rather be doing other things than playing video games, the only computer related thing she does is facebook, and would rather read Twilight for the 15th time than read a comic.  ;D

People change...I get this so I am not upset about it. But was liking all of that stuff just an act? hmm...  :)

Hopefully you have others reasons to be attracted to your wife :)  Its nice to have a wife that has a lot of the same interests, but its also nice to have that space to yourself.  For example, my wife and I both play golf, some of buddies are like, "that's so cool that your wife likes golf" and other buddies are like, "I am glad my wife doesn't like golf, that the whole point of playing golf - to get away from your wife!"

+1 for having a slot car track.

also

+1 for having a slot car track being dorkier than having an arcade game.

It's only dorkier because an arcade cab can be seen as an antique. Your track and cars (no matter how old or valuable they are) will only be seen as toys. Not only are they toys, but unlike arcade cabinets, they're toys you do not allow kids to play with.

Now that my cabinet is done I've started working on making my track permanent.

My track has a train crossing. So it's a car and train set. Double the dorkiness.

The great thing about slot cars is it's something fun to do while drinking and watching a cheesy car movie.

Two weeks ago I had a couple of buddies over and we raced while watching Fireball 500 and Thunder Alley (http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Fireball-500-Thunder-Alley-Double-Feature/70032787?strackid=5f318ae5ae757fe_0_srl&strkid=576856674_0_0&lnkctr=srchrd-sr&trkid=222336).

Since I finished my arcade cabinet I haven't really played it. When I have friends or family over with kids it'll get played for a few minutes, but adults never touch it.

My slot car track, even though it's just a temporary track on a 4X8 sheet, is the reason my buddy's would rather meet in my basement than at a bar.  We're between the ages of 40 and 60, acting/feeling like teenagers in our parents' basements.

Very dorky, but very fun.

Holy Crap!  Trains + slotcars!  If you had action figures on it, and the track doubled as a storage compartment for your comics collection and dungeons and dragons gear, well I think my head would explode from the dorkiness.

I am going to bookmark this thread, the next time my wife says I am being dorky I will pull it up and say "well at least I'm not one of these slot car/action figure/train guys" and then mumble (though I wish I were one of their friends) under my breath...

My friends and I meet on a monthly basis (every third friday evening of the month) and we spend the evening talking about cars, going through last month's Top Gear magazine, drinking beers, racing slot cars, playing the occasional arcade game (even more so when my cab's will be finished) or playing billiards (we have a table in our room). Besides the monthly evenings, I also host the occasional slot race event. Very dorky but very nice  ;D

For our purposes MOOs were pretty good because they allowed user created object oriented content.  Good programming practice.  Plus it was pretty rare for someone to come along and chop your head off.   :laugh2:

Lets get back to business here. A WoW themed cabinet?!?  :o Sounds cool. Tell me youre going Horde for the design!

True enough.

The misfits seem to all hang out at TwinGalaxies ... but they end up in movies, so who am I to say ?

mikezilla, not going Horde all the way although that is my preferred faction.  im actually going to have the faction logos as the side art.  the horde symbol then under that the different racial symbols and on the other side same thing for alliance.  marquee will be a take off of the "world of warcraft" logo and the cp will be a combination of the 3 expansions thus far.  plus im gonna do a sweet bezel info card.  buttons will be in horde and alliance colors.

joystick? Or buttons for movement?  Trackball? or mouse?

well donkbaca, funny you should ask that.  i have no idea!!!  i posted a question on the main board asking this very question.  got a lot of views but not one answer.  kind of pissed me off to be honest.  im not gonna do buttons for movement im pretty sure.  most really good players use a mouse to move as it allows you to turn around faster so i was thinking trackball but id need mouse buttons as well.  im considering joysticks since its pretty much like using the arrows on my laptop but i want the better movement like the trackball.  i might do both :D  any suggestions would be appreciated greatly.

It could work. But WoW is something you play for hours at a time so make sure it's comfortable.  I think a joystick would work fine. You need a button to jump. I would have a street fighter type setup for your quick bar. I think you need a mouse though. I don't see a trackball being responsive enough

I agree with everything you said. I think a trackball is a little awkward too considering you have to be somewhat precise when using the buttons on the HUD. Thats cool man, sounds interesting. I like to play horde, so, naturally, I think they are cooler. But your ideas sound awesome. I cant wait to check it out the pics in the project announcement board.

So the question is, how do you put a mouse on a cab, and have it look decent?  Me thinks there is some col potential for hackery here...

I don't think it would be that hard.  You just need to find something to fit a wireless mouse in, and then migrate the buttons.  The hard part part would be finding something that looks cool that would be comfortable to play...

rayb that looks awesome!!!  however i have really big hands and i dont relish the idea of playing on that thing for an hour or two   im also absolutely terrible at hacking electronics so i may just go with the joystick and trackball and switch between the two.  donkbaca, as for keys/hotkeys, im gonna have 36 main buttons, i dont macro anything.  then ill have the admin buttons for character sheet, achievments, professions, dungeon finder and the admin window.  as well as button for mount, fishing, and archaeology.  like i said earlier, loooot of buttons.  ipac4 here i come   :afro:

on the cp overlay im definitely gonna have everything marked off with a picture.  probably not the action buttons but theyll be organized just as they are on screen so i should be ok.  im not an elite or even great player, i just have fun with it so i dont get too serious with the ui and such.  for me its like the original D&D tabletop, which i play, in 2d/3d and its great.
