Title: CPS2 Battery Replacement

I have been looking and there seems to be 3 schools of thought

a) Solder in Battery
b) Keystone Battery holder
c) Ditch the battery and get the phoenix chips


The keystone looks to be the easiest route for down the road but I have read bad things about them does anyone here have any first had knowledge and what is the consensus?

i have always kept the cps2 as stock and used a solder tag battery
trouble with battery holders is that they can become loose or corrode

I always solder in a new battery unless the board was already dead.

Thanks for reminding me I need to do this to my Puzzle Fighter!  Those suckers are kinda rare, and I don't want to lose it.

I plan to pheonix mine, its just some games, like SFZ3 use 6 chips. hobbyroms.com for the win

when you phoenix it you can have the put any cps2 game rom on it right?

Solder in battery. Any little corrosion can cause a bad connection and a suicide. Also, if you drop the cart there's a chance the battery could pop out of the holder and suicide the cart.

No. Phoenixing the game means you erase and reprogram the program ROMs on the cart with code that runs without the encryption keys. The graphic and sound ROMs don't get touched. If you wanted to convert the cart there's more to it than that as you have PROMs that must match the game and you may have to change jumper settings on the cart board to match the type of ROMs being used.
