Title: Paddle Wars: Hit The Wall
Post by: speeder on December 03, 2010, 05:59:32 pm
So, I am making a game that will feature a custom cabinet and hardware :D (although it will be PC, GNU/Linux based).

The game is almost done, and has a trailer: Paddle Wars: Hit The Wall beta Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yes-Zh8V1xQ#)

The cabinet is still in design stage, but I intend to finish it VERY fast (it will be displayed in a event mid-january).

Today the stuff from Happ and Ultimarc arrived ( 3'' high trackball, not-chrome superlux and mini-pac).

I am designing the control panel now :D

More info, and old prototype is available on IndieDB http://www.indiedb.com/games/paddle-wars-hit-the-wall (http://www.indiedb.com/games/paddle-wars-hit-the-wall)

Nice job, it looks interesting. Like Geometry Wars meets Arkanoid.

Does your paddle only go from side to side?  I was just thinking wouldn't it be better if you got a spinner instead of a trackball?

The trackball is to aim the ball, and some special powers that I will create later (like a black hole, that sucks everything toward the cursor, for example...)

looks fun. if i understand. you will use a trackball to aim and a spinner for the paddle.  if so i like the idea. adds more depth to the game play.. sorta bowling/break out/??  heh. look forward to seeing the cab.

i was thinking.  for a power up you could have the ball give its control over to the track ball for X amount of seconds.  and just have this on levels were the only way you can complete it would be to have to get the power up.. and then aim using the track ball at some weird angle than could not be achieved with regular paddle so the only way to the complete the level would be using this power up.  or something. heh.

Hello again :D

No, there are no spinner, only trackball...

Moving the trackball moves the paddle (actually the paddle follows mouse_x), if you hold the ball creation button, a cursor shows up, and the paddle stops, then you can aim the ball, with force of the ball being proportional to how far the mouse if from the paddle, and the angle being the same... After you release the button the ball shoots, the paddle resumes moving (following mouse_x), and the cursor disappears.

All that was actually coded today XD

Anyway, soon I will post some pics of the controller prototype.

EDIT:
I've put those in the blog: blog.agfgames.com
