Well since I've officially started design of a Mame cabinet I decided to put my old NES Cabinet online as well. I know this isn't a Mame project but it is kind of a build your own arcade anyway. Check it out at:

I remember reading your letter in Nintendo Power. It never occurred to me that they squish the letters down. I always just thought the kids were all idiots who mailed off one paragraph letters. =)

Okay, I want your bay that you're using for a workshop.
Love the baby's room as well. As a wood worker, I have to give thumbs up to the entertainment center and crib as well.

Actually that's my dad's sign shop in Utah. We moved to Texas 10 months ago and now have a tiny garage. :-\

thats cool as hell. i actually have that issue. dont remember seeing it back in the day, but it was cool to dig it up and see it in print too.

I, too, had Nintendo Fun Club News. I remember that issue, too. I didn't read many of the letters to the editor, though. I went straight to the good stuff. I still ahve my whole collection in boxes, so I'm sure I still have that issue, too.

man reading about that nes advantage brings back memories. i remeber when that came out and being an arcade junkie, i had to have one. i have to admit, i was a bit disapointed in it's game play, i went back to the pads and it rarely got used.
oddly enough, i still have mine. it's one of the few pieces i still have of my original nes collection. go figga. i pulled out and hooked up all my nintendo stuff the other day. maybe i should give it another shot. heh heh.

Hey you stole my idea! ;) Well not necessarily, I'm basing my cabinet on the playchoice ten artwork and style. I remember seeing an ad for a cabinet, that included controls, you had to provide the nintendo and tv. I love that nintendo cabinet. All the stuff I created when I was a kid looked like crap. :P

Yeah the NES is a great system for a cab since most of it's games are side scrolling 80's style. I'd have to say too that the NES Advantage wasn't used all that much by my me either until I put them on the cab. The pads just worked too well. But if anyone ever decides to play Mighty Bomb Jack on the NES, grab a NES Max. I swear it was made for that game since the A and B each have a separate turbo button, perfect I tell ya, perfect.

Love the cab! I thought it was cool when I first looked. Then I noticed you had star wars figs on top! So much cooler!

That was sweet! Oh man Nannuu I remember reading that issue and seeing that cab and being really jealous and wanting to make one myself. Of course it took me 14 years to actually get started...
It stinks that they cut down your letter but you have to understand that Nintendo Power needed all the space it had printing articles that boiled down to "All Nintendo games are great". It was like "Astynax (I'm not going to even pretend I know how to spell that stupid game's name) is really rad!" and then Howard Phillips would come out with his bowtie and conduct an interview with New Kids on the Block asking them why they think every Nintendo game ever made is gnarly! GAHHH - that biased magazine led me to more poor purchases than drunken nights on E-Bay.

I love your cab...although, I was a pong/ATARI 2600 kid.

Dang, you are old. But seriously I remember playing atom smasher and gravitron on a trs-80. Ah the good old days of 5 1/4" disks and one color monitors

Hey thanks guys. The good old days of the NES, when you live in Wyoming you really don't have much else to do I guess. I haven't got Nintendo Power for a long long time, it seemed way too biased after I discovered other game systems (ie Phantasy Star for SMS). I also thought I was going to make a billion dollars off of my keyboard joystick idea but soon realized the idea was done long before me. Deoh!
I actually got a lot of letters requesting plans for the cabinet. I guess some people are good at tracking down addresses or something. I sent out quite a few plans there for a while.
This is the greatest board/site in the world! I can't believe there are so many guys out there with this similar interest. I wish I'd found it years ago, I could've had a few cabs done already.

It is a small world isn't it? I had that exact idea when I first saw the NES Advantage controllers. A friend of mine informed me that someone had done it already and showed me that issue of Nintendo Power that your letter was in.
BTW, you should update that TV to something with composite inputs. RF is really bad. What would be really nice would be to get ahold of one of those presentation/developer's NES's with the RGB outputs...

That's funny, I was trying to show my daughter how to play Mario and Bubble Bobble last night on there. I had a heck of a time just getting the carts to work. I was seriously thinking of changing it to a monitor and hiding a computer in there to play only NES games, then just leaving the carts in there for show. I could easily add a hacked port to allow for the NES controllers.
.....yep, it's gonna have to happen eventually.

The hobby is expensive only if you buy everything on eBay (which tends to be WAYYYY over priced).
I'm been collecting NES games myself since 1999 and am aboout 50 games away from owning them all. That's over 700 games, 200 boxes and 400+ manuals and countless systems and accessories.
Yup.. MAME machine is fun, but nothing like the real NES hardware! ;)

Looking at your collection, I'd estimate you have about 330-375 games. NICE!

I lost count over 400. Haven't bothered to count them lately, either, as they're all boxed up.
You're where I aspire to be. I haven't been able to acquire as many games as I used to when I lived in San Diego so it's hard to play catchup to guys like you.
I used to go in to Mexico and for every trip I'd find about 10 or 15 games I didn't own. I don't recall ever spending more than $10 on games, either. It was lovely.
This one time I purchased well over 300 games for $100 USD. There were only 30 that I didn't have, but I knew I could get my money back by selling them on ebay. And boy did I ever. I swear there had to be at least a dozen copies of each Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Zelda and MegaMan games.
As far as hulkster's comment on having to blow in to cartridges... If you're a serious collector you get a toploader or you replace the 72-pin connector ($7 part) in the original NES. It greatly reduces the rituals and pains of getting games to load. I paid $90 for my toploader. Kinda nuts, I know... But it's worth it.
