Mice are reverse input devices and spinners are direct input devices. Is there a way I can reverse my spinner so that it makes everything go the correct direction in MAME? Otherwise are there Windows driver settings?
-
Spinners are reverse input?? What you smoking?
You may have wired your spinner incorrectly. However, in mame's Analog Input menu I believe is the ability to reverse an axis. Not sure exactly which menu it is in but it is there.
-
No I said spinners are direct input. Read it again...
I bought this pre-made spinner from a guy on ebay and when I spin left it moves right and vice versa. The documentation he sent with it says this is normal, but I would tend to disagree... But that is what I am stuck with.
The thing is glued shut and I would rather not pop open something I just paid good money for to try and figure it out. I'd rather find a way to do it in software.

OK this makes me mad... I already have a trackball that works fine. Now I have a spinner that works in reverse. I planned on making both available, but they go in opposite directions so I'm gonna ahve to mess with command line switches and other stuff just to make this thing work the way it's supposed to...
I hope this guy doesn't mind giving refunds cuz he's about to get asked for one...

Aren't I right in assuming that when you plug in a spinner it should just work? When you turn it to the right it should move to the right and when you turn it to the left it should turn to the left?
-
look in the ANALOG option of the game, play with the settings that say DIAL REVERSE and make it opposite of whats defaulted to (YES/NO).
-
To make it spin the other way is just reversing two wires. What spinner? got a pic?
-
I think I know the spinner he's talking about. Black box home made piece off of Ebay.
You should be able to just pry the case open and swap the two lead wires. Should just be a ground and two triggers like any other optical input.
That way you don't have to screw around with different settings for your tracball and spinner or whatever else you add.
Just a suggestion though ;)

See? That's what I thought! It's a USB spinner. Looks homemade. The box strongly resembles a Radio Shack project box. Let me find the auction... Lemme find the link...

I can't open it cuz it's glued shut. I would have to break it to open it up.
The thing spins well and seems to work well aside from working reverse. I don't want to try that "dial reverse" for every game that requires a spinner!
Plus if it's a general analog setting then that means that my trackball is going to be backwards (which is even worse than changing every individual game).
-
Well, unfortunately the only way I can suggest to fix it permenantly is to open it up. You can always re-glue it or buy another project box from radio shack.
I'd try drilling out the bottom to access the wires, but without knowing where or how he mounted the board, I'd be afraid to drill into something important.
-
Exactly my point. I don't want to start cutting through the plastic and clip a wire. Or even worse, yank it out entirely.
I'm confident I can piece it back together. I'm just afraid of busting it while taking it apart.
Besides, this is really all beyond the principal of thing. The thing should have worked from the beginning... The guy who sold it to me either doesn't know what he's doing in building these things or masks his carelessness as "intent".
-
Don't get hot man. You can't expect to get quality products if their sole selling source is ebay. ;)
-
Well I tried reversing and it works fine... Tempest actually plays the way it's supposed to. I can reverse for all the games, but I need a list of spinner games. Where can I find one?
I need a list of spinner games excluding driving games.
-
Looks like a mouse hack. If you cut carefully near the top you probably won;t cut any wires. Even if you do maybe all of them are different colors. Aynway, making your own mouse hack afterwards isn't that tought to do if needed.
-
Well I could have told you it was a mouse hack. :)
It's actally a pretty steady device. I'm totally satisfied with the thing, except for the part about being backwards. As for taking it apart, I can't see the wires on the inside so I'm afraid of screwing something up. I have a fair guess of what the mechanices inside look like. It's the electronics I'm afraid of damaging.
-
Dremel around the glue joint. It'll free the sides without cutting more than plastic depth. Know anyone with a dremel?
-
If it is a mouse hack, then they may be using the mouse optic board to read it, in that case it may not be a wire, the optic board might just be upside down.

There would be a million easy ways to solve this if the thing wasn't glued shut with what looks like jb weld. I don't want to have to break it open so I'm just ognna go the software method... On the other hand, though, having one device backwards means that I will be able to identify whether it's a spinner game or trackball game by which control works properly (since only 1 will).
