I really want a cocktail machine for myself, but I've noticed quite a few of them can be downright ugly. However, the Ms Pacman is a work of art. Which other games used that cabinet that aren't worth as much?
Building one from a plan is time-consuming. Buying a kit is a bit pricy and you still don't even have coin door, monitor, etc. I figure the best option is to find a beat up (beyond good use) machine like the one OSCAR found. What other games use this cabinet, though. I want to know what names to look for when I start searching.

i bought an original galaga (broken pcb, shattered moniter) for $45 from a local restaraunt. its not a ms. pac-man, but i love it. i play it more than my two uprights combined.
edit: actually, just went to klov, that ms. pac cocktail looks pretty damn close to mine. if they are not the same cab (oscar, paige, one of you knows) then they are very much alike

Alan, I'll break your legs if you get a cocktail I'm bidding on at the auction!! ;)
You are right about some cocktails being ugly. I would LOVE to find one like Oscar's. That's the perfect MAME find.
I would assume PacMan had the same form.
I kinda dig the school desk looking ones. Like Donkey Kong was in. Kinda plain, but they just scream "bowling alley bar".

The basic Midway cocktail design spanned a bunch of titles. There may be minute differences between them, but generally the parts will interchange.
Galaxian
Galaga
Pac-Man
Ms. Pac-Man
Kick/Kick Man
Tron
Satan's Hollow
Gorf
Bosconian
Omega Race
Rally-X
Gaplus
Also, there were conversion kits with glass made for said cocktail. Including (but not limited to) Circus Charlie.

Not directly related to your question, but...
Had I not found mine, I would have considered purchasing a Ms. Pac cocktail kit from www.arcadedepot.com. ...And this is coming from somebody who enjoys building cabinets. I wouldn't be too surprised if their kits increased in price before too long because it seems like you get quite a bit of pre-cut wood & hardware for the $195 kit considering what other new cabinet kits cost. Plus they have that snazzy 3rd panel add-on! ;)
The original Ms. Pac cocktail is one of my favorite cocktail designs (I also like the Taito ones with the metal legs!), and you can find used and repro parts for these nearly everywhere.

i've seen Mr. do and Arkinoid.i also meet this guy that claims he puts golden tee kits in them?

Too bad I'm cheap AND broke... The kit would give me a nice, new machine but it's more money than I can afford for an incomplete machine. I wanna pay $200 for a machine with a working monitor. (i know... "Good luck", right?)
Maybe I can find an unpopular cocktail at the DFW Super Auctions (as unlikely as that sounds).

They're out there Alan. I just picked up a $200 working Midway cocktail cabinet that's been converted to Capcom Bowling.
-
My buddy Patrick picked up my Time Pilot cocktail at an auction for $25. It didn't power on there.
Inside was a non-working Galaga boardset. I bought the machine (minus Galaga board) from him for $50. The monitor worked flawlessly (I capped it anyway, not that it needed it).
After another $50 for a PCB, $5 for a harness, $3 for paint (legs, and to repair the underside of the glass where the paint flaked), and $4 for new leg levelers it came out beautiful. Grand total of $112 for a very nice, very rare Time Pilot cocktail.
Of course that isn't the Midway cabinet. It is more of the school desk style cab.

Why do you think it went for so low at an auction? You think it's cuz it didn't power on? Or do you think it's cuz the game wasn't viewed as valuable?
-
Well, to start, very few people even knew that dedicated Time Pilot cocktails even existed. They had a tiny run. I, Robot, Duramold Williams games, and Vectorbeam titles are common compared to these bad boys. The serial number on mine was 7, and I have heard of machine number 12. No others seem to have been mentioned anywhere online.
So, no one knew what it was.
Then, it didn't power on. The black paint under the glass was extensively flaking. (Which I later fixed by scraping all the black off and repainting it, looks great now).
The legs were rusty (also fixed that by stripping and repainting them).
The leg levels were partially missing, and partially a huge mass of rust.
Lower coin box door was missing (still is actually, only part I haven't been able to find).
So basically, prospective bidders saw a dead 13" cocktail that was in questionable condition.
Patrick wanted to give up on it. I said I could do it. And I did. It looks and plays great now. But I am still doing a few things to it. (Replacing the joysticks with the proper ones, finding that lower cash box door, and wiring the player 2 panel).
Technically, I bought the monitor and the joysticks from him, and he gave me the cocktail for free,

I guess I'll have to keep my eyes open for a cocktail at the Super Auction... *fingers crossed*
Sounds like you got a once-in-a-lifetime buy, though. I'd bet chances of something like that again are next to impossible.

You know I hate kits, but I've gotta agree with Oscar on this one. You can't even build one yourself for that price.
