Title: MAMEing a Hang-On
Post by: SavannahLion on June 01, 2010, 02:29:29 am
Next month (after the garage sale), I'll have enough space to work on the Hang-On cab I picked up three years ago. While I was examining the cab to see what needs to be done (refreshing my memory) when I wondered about the possibility of MAMEing the Hang-On cab to play motorcycle and motorcycle-like (like Paperboy) games.

I have to rebuild the control bars anyways. Since I recall the cabinet was supposed to have used actual motorcycle parts, I figure I'll hit up the local motorcycle, scooter, ATV, and snowmobile shops on sale days and pick up some parts. Since snowmobiles have a lot of "clip-on" accessories for the handles, I figure motorcycles and ATVs have the same options. Shouldn't be too hard to add extra buttons and whatnot for extra controls and still make it look nice.

But checking over KLOV and MAMEDB. There are only 19 motorcycle games that use motorcycle style handlebars, only 3 have good emulation in MAME and four are imperfect. Wow, seven out of 19 games may or may not work with this cab. Yikes. Almost not worth it.

I suppose I could fudge some games like Paperboy and S.T.U.N. Runner to work with the cab controls.

Any suggestions or ideas? If I MAME this cab, I'm looking at the possibility at a drop-in solution. I think I have to rebuild the wiring harness and I'll be crimping on new connectors anyways.

No, I'm not building a whole new CP to play SFII. I have a separate project for that.

swap out the handle bars for a steering wheel?

The Handlebars use the same internals as a steering wheel... so you can
play any typical non-360 driving game.

The throttle should also map fine as a gas pedal.
The brake, im not so sure about.  I know super hangons brake setup is kinda
strange.

Thought of that right after I posted. The Hang-On cab uses a simple hinged plate. Easy to duplicate.

I suppose so. Maybe I can pretend I'm driving Schettini's Monster Jerky (http://www.thefreelibrary.com/BOUNCY+STAND-UP+RIDE+MODIFIED+MONSTER+TRUCK+MAN%27S+LATEST...-a089447981)  :laugh2:
