Title: Fav Emulators to Run?
Post by: Demon-Seed on May 31, 2010, 09:17:49 am
Hi
First let me apologize in advance as I think this was likely asked before, however I have had no luck with the search feature.  I am wondering is there a poll or list of the most popular or favourite emulators to run on a cabinet?

thanks
Jim

It depends on the games/systems you want to emulate, as well as the specs of you computer. Are you talking about both arcade and console emulation ?

Here is a list of emulator that I have on my Cab or that i have tried.

** Arcade **
=> Mame
=> Model 2 Emulator :  Most sega model 2 games run slow in mame
=> Zinc : For playstation based games - most of them run well in mame with a decent config
=> BlazBlue CS : the taito X2 game - that is not really an emulator

** Naomi(arcade) **
Naomi is the arcade equivalent of the dreamcast.
=> Makaron : Best emulator but requires a good computer. A little complicated to configure.
=> Demul : Faster than Makaron. Run also Atomiswave Games (kof neofighters, etc.). Can play vertical shoot'em up on an horizontal screen (ikaruga, etc.).
=> NullDC : Faster than Demul, but the second player doesn't work for naomi games.

** Dreamcast **
=> NullDC
=> Makaron
=> Demul

** Nintendo 64**
=> Project64

** PS2 **
=> PCSX2 : Requires a very good computer and can play a lot of the games. I used it for Metal Slug 6, but now you can find a PC version.

** GameCube and Wii **
=> Dolphin : Requires a very good computer (64bits is a lot faster) and can play a lot games. I tested new super mario bros wii successfully at full speed.

** Nintendo DS/GBA **
=> No$gba 2.6a : Requires a good computer for DS games. I was not able to run super mario DS full speed.
=> Desmume : Requires a good computer too.

** Genesis/Sega CD/... **
=> Kega Fusion

** SNES **
=> Zsnes

** Playstation **
=> ePSXe

There is more emulators like psp (Jpcsp), Virtual Boy (vbjin,Mednafen, etc.) but i haven't try them. If you start with those, it should keep you busy for a while ;)

what pc do you run to get the ps2 emulator working?  I tried to play God of War on my 3.2 GHz 2 GB RAM PC and it was playing at about 70% speed which makes it unplayable.

My Cab is a 2.4GHz core2duo with a radeon 3870 (XP 32bits), but i haven't try God of War on it. I just wanted to play metal slug 6 at the time and it was running pretty well (with some slow down in some areas). I don't think my cab is powerfull enough to run GoW or shadow of collossus though.

from what Ive seen you could probably play everything but the PS2 and Nintendo DS, and maybe Nintendo DS but mine lags at a 1.8 GHz.  PS1 runs fine, except on 3D games like MK4.  MK Trilogy works good.  I run ZSNES, Fusion (Genesis), Nestopia, Project 64 (works but im having some issue with it ), and DeSuME (NDS).  You coudl try ePSXe for the PS1.  Mortal Kombat Trilogy is great on it, and Jet Moto 3!

add MagicEngine for PCE/TurboGrafX-16 Emulation. It works perfect.

yeah there were a few good games on the TG16. At the time the system was ahead of the curve in the graphics department. First time I played Bonks Adventure was on the TG16. And I loved the fact that the TG pocket (hand held) used the regular carts from the TG 16, kind of like the Sega Nomad did later on.

Not to mention Devils Crash/Crush. It's a very addictive virtual pinball game.  :applaud:

Seconded on NESTopia for NES emulation - it's as close to cycle accurate emulation as you're gonna get. Same with ZSNES, KEGA Fusion, and Magic Engine (all running on my emulation station at the moment).

Yeah the dolphin emulator works great on my pc, I can run many games at a decent speed, unfortunately there's no easy way to set it up for a cab.. some games use the wii control, some use the wii control sideways, some use the wii plus nunchuck, and some allow better playability with a gamecube control

pcsx2 runs great! Not too bad for a cab, you just need the right games.
