I have an ArcadeVGA card (AGP) and Mame. I recently did a clean install of mame.exe 0.137, copied the mame.ini from the old install and ran avres (have D9200). Now when I try to play any game, I get the error "Unable to initialize DirectDraw". My old install still works though! I made sure DirectX 9 is up to date and XP is up to date. I tested Direct Draw and it is enabled and tests pass. Has anyone ran into this error?

what was the old mame? 100?

Hmm I'll have to look. I tried letting the new mame make the .ini and then set the settings according to the ArcadeVGA installation instructions, but that didn't work. Then I tried copying the old mame.ini over, and got the same result.
Googling for this error says to update DirectX, but it is up to date, and I have verified that Direct Draw is indeed working. I'm not sure what is triggering mame to make this error.

I had problems using the ini files from different versions, I would save (rename yours) and get a new ini for you current Mame (in dos type Mame -cc) and edit it you want or just try it and see if your error goes away. Worth a shot. I know I had a Mame ini from a 137 and tried it on a 135 build and I got a error for some thing and a new ini fixed it.

I'll go give it a shot, although a new .ini file was the first thing I did. My old version works, so I'll have to trial and error to get to the problem. I'll post my findings.

I finally got it working, it must have been a typo in the mame.ini. I deleted it, re-created it and entered the settings again, and it started working on about the third try. I don't know what I did wrong about three times!
