So I picked up a Golden Axe that is completely taken apart elecronically....Seems like all the wires are there, just not connected to anything...
I have this massive power supply and a smaller board thing that also plays a part in supplying power ? :P
As well as the PCB which looks great, so for now I'm only concerned about the power supply.
Where do I start with this thing? Is it even worth using still?
It's comical that it weighs like 20lbs and it has been hard to find information on it or just re-wiring the machine in general.
I'm dedicating this weekend to Golden Axe, with the help and wisdom of you guys out there of course! ;)
Any info even just on what the individual components are would be appreciated, I'm eager to learn.

I'm wiring the harness now...I have the control panel complete, and I just want to make sure I have the right idea for the +5V and 12V spots.
Where do I get the +5V and 12V from?
It looks like I have things to plug into the Molex connectors... Just don't know which ones and where they are supposed to go...
Again I'd love any help you can throw my way!

That's a Bally/Midway "suitcase" power supply.
They're more trouble than they're worth...I'd just go with a "JAMMA cab style" switching power supply.
-
Yea, I'm thinking that's a good idea.... But I don't like to be defeated, or wait to receive it in the mail :P
I saw a cool one with a digital voltage display, I think I'll get that.
Oh and my question now is..... If I get a switching power supply, I can get rid of the suitcase but I still need a transformer right? Can I swipe it off of the suitcase?
Can I get rid of the other board with the funky black thing and transistors on it then too?
I already have a JAMMA cab (in another location from the Golden Axe) so I should be able to compare them once I get the switching PS.
Soooo many wires and molex connections :dizzy:

Your cab was a conversion. Midway did not make Golden Axe. So wanting to keep that stuff is pointless, since it's not what should be used to begin with. Sell the Midway board to someone restoring a Midway cab.
There MIGHT be some benefits to the "suitcase". It has an isolation transformer which is needed for older monitors, and it also has the fuses and AC filter, which don't hurt either. Point I'm getting at is you might be able to install your switcher and feed it the AC power from that block and then you get the benefit of the filtering and fuse protection.
Post a pic of your cab and we'll tell you what it used to be.
-
Yea that sounds cool....OK so I took the switcher and transformer out of my other cabinet. Now how do I connect it through the AC power?
I like the idea of the extra filtering and fuse protection!
Here are some pictures of the cabinet itself...the Kool-Aid orange is the top
Thanks!

Used to be a Satan's Hollow!

Awesome!
I love that side art...Haven't seen the game itself in person though...
That would explain the extra wiring for the blacklight mounted under the below the monitor I guess...very cool stuff, thanks Ray.
I won't be able to work on it till Friday, but does anyone know how if I can just take the isolation transformer off the big suitcase power supply and use that with the switching power supply? Or even use the 2 in conjunction like RayB mentioned before?
:burgerking:

I love the Satan's Hollow artwork! I think it epitomizes classic gaming craftsmanship.
This is me getting rid of the some of the Golden Axe once I realized what was underneath and revealing the beautiful control panel marquee.

Switching to restoration?
-
I thought about it for a second...but I really don't care for the game itself (Satan's Hollow).
I just wanted to show the awesome blacklight effect. I don't plan on keeping it long, I will sell it as a Golden Axe.
