Post by: abispac on April 20, 2010, 03:05:27 pm
Mi brother in law has an ps2 slim, and i was wondering if someone knows an easy way to play backups? somenthing that can be done with another moded ps2, like copying an exploit to a memory card, or somenthing similar, heres what got , a regular ps2 slim, a regular memory card, an a friend with moded fat ps2, thanks for any help.

Free MCBoot (FMCB) sounds like it would fit the bill.  Only drawback is that you have to pass the ISOs through some file editor (all automatic mind you) that makes them compatible with the loader.

[clarification]
FMCB allows you to run unsigned code.  ESR is the unsigned code that allows modified backups to be run.

NOTE: it is the policy of the persons who run these forums along with those who run the psx-scene forums to not pirate nor discuss piracy (other than how bad it is) on their respective forums.  Please only talk about making backups of games you own.

That would require a harddrive which really isn't possible on a slim, only fats

your best bet is to get rid of the slim for a real ps2

Do you have to burn the ISO's with the ESR Patch or will it apply the ESR Patch on the fly automatically, so one doesn't have to re-burn everything?

You're stuck re-burning your collection.  As far as I know the ESR patch does NOT screw up the backups for use in PS2s with mods other than the ESR launcher so at least you'll only have to burn a game once provided that you haven't already burned it.

Oh, and you'll have to make additional effort to covert every CD game to a DVD ISO. :P

WOW. So let me get this straight, you guys are saying it's possible to play ISO disks with out a hard drive using Free MC boot as long as the ISOs are patched with ESR?

with the real ps2's sure but certain slim versions do not work.

Reading this post it seems as though you might be a little confused although it might just be that you've simplified how this all works too far to make sense anymore...

Here's a semi-simplified rundown of what you'll need to do to play PS2 copies on an "unmodded" PS2:

1.  Get yourself a memory card containing Free MCBoot (this is the hardest part*)
2.  Place the ESR Launcher on the memory card or a USB flash drive
3.  Acquire an ISO (download one or rip a real PS2 game)
4.  if the ISO is a CD ISO (vs DVD ISO) you will need to convert it to a DVD ISO
5.  Patch the ISO with the ESR ISO patcher
6.  Burn the patched ISO
7.  Boot to the ESR Launcher and launch the patched, burned game

*In order to install Free MCBoot to a memory card you will need a PS2 that can already run unsigned code.  This could be one with a modchip, one of those cheat discs I believe or a memory card with Free MCBoot already on it.  Yup, once you have a Free MCBoot card, you can make more!

If anyone wants me to install Free MCBoot to a memory card for them I am glad to.  I live in NH(USA) and will do it for nothing.  Of course if you do not live near me you'll have to mail it to me and provide return shipping.  PM me.

with the real ps2's sure but certain slim versions do not work.
I've never heard of this.  Can you point me to more info?

That's a lot of damn work to play a bunch of old ass games I wouldn't give you $5/each for.   :P

Yeah especially you can get the game for a few $$$

Please upset Sony and buy your used games from a retail outlet.  ;D

The real joy of free mc boot is to use it to play a phat ps2 with a broken disk drive, loading everything from harddrive.

It's the same deal if you want to play from optical media with Free MCBoot and ESR.  You'll have to reburn.  The thing the fat PS2 gives you is IDE connectivity (via the network adapter) which lets you drop in a HDD of almost limitless size and copy most (compatibility is not 100%) of your games to the HDD so you can store your discs away.

Thank you crashwg,  I've had Mc Boot running a hard drive on a Fat PS2 for about 5 months now and never knew about ESR disk patching until I saw this thread. I tried it and it worked  :applaud:   It works the same on a PS2 slim  cool.

Just wanted to get this information into the "console" section that I've got two PS2 memory cards pre-loaded with FreeMCBoot for sale for $7 shipped in BST.

Read the rest of this thread if you don't know what FreeMCBoot can do.
